TM Forums Catalyst program is a cornerstone of our IoT efforts. As its name suggests, the
program is designed to speed up progress by bringing dynamic teams together to address
specific business issues. The companies work closely together on projects lasting from three to
six months, culminating in live demonstrations at TM Forums main events.
Results are typically fed back into the Forums Frameworx suite of standards-based tools and
best practices (see panel on page 20), to be shared by others and further improved. They act as
an external accelerator to complement the R&D efforts of the companies involved.

Value fabrics are not sequential and often involve multiple
collaborating parties who may play a variety of roles

Source: TM Forum 2014

What is a value fabric?

A value fabric is a mesh of interwoven, cooperating organizations and individuals. Value
chains tend to be sequential with well-defined roles for each party in the chain. Value fabrics,
on the other hand, are not sequential and often involve multiple collaborating parties who play
a variety of roles.
Some parties engaged in a value fabric deliver value in the form of goods or services
directly to their customers and assure that customers expectations continue to be met, while
others deliver and assure value indirectly. Customers also play an important role in the digital
ecosystem represented by the fabric. Above is an example of a cloud value fabric.
The key to making the most of the value fabric is that all parties are able to collaborate
effectively in delivering goods and services to customers. The TM Forum approach is
based on operationally deployed solutions as described in the Online Partnering Guide.
The end result is a kind of digital bridge between parties based on reusable concepts and
components. Building this bridge using TM Forums Frameworx suite of standards-based
tools and best practices provides a common language, business processes, information, key
performance indicators and APIs for successful digital partnerships.
For more information about the value fabric, check out John Reillys blogs on Inform or
see his book, Frameworx: Mastering the Digital World. You may also contact John directly

The right tools make building digital partnerships easier

TM Forum, along with more than two dozen leading enterprises, including Apigee, BaseN,
Cisco, Detecon, Ericsson, IBM, Microsoft, Orange, Verizon Telematics and ISPM, have
collaborated to create the first version of the Digital Services Toolkit. This brings together
a number of components, including the Digital Services Reference Architecture (DSRA),
B2B2X partnering tools, REST-based management application program interfaces (APIs) and a
Business API Guide. The toolkit is part of the Forums Open Digital Program, which consists
of two core themes:

n The Open Digital Ecosystem workstream, which develops common best practices,
standards and tools that enable an open ecosystem where new services can be delivered
quickly, easily and securely using a wide range of business models and partners. Specific
areas of focus include REST-based management APIs (addressing scalable and reusable
APIs for digital services and IoT applications), the DSRA (addressing a standard reference
architecture blueprint for digital services and IoT applications), and B2B2X partnering
(addressing best practices for partnerships via toolsets and guidebooks for digital services
and IoT applications).
n Industry verticals and connected world applications, which consist of vertical initiatives
that focus on key industry applications, including smart energy, smart cities and digital
health. Additionally, cross-industry applications establish a common language and blueprint
for scalable, secure and successful ecosystems of connected things. Key best practices
for this theme are being established in the areas of IoT, business models, partnerships,
security and privacy, standards, innovation management and data analytics.

In addition to including APIs, the DSRA and B2B2X partnering, the Digital Services Toolkit
includes a Business API Guide, which provides target use cases and templates to address the
requirements of different vertical markets and application areas. The release includes Applied
Frameworx for Smart Energy, which provides utilities with examples of using Frameworx best
practices, blueprints, models, APIs and integration, to create a scalable set of digital services
to address priority use cases, and Applied Frameworx for IoT, which provides business
canvas templates that support vertical industry user stories.
