Data:

I. Power consumption of appliances:

II. Appliances and their usage per day

III. Load usage and load shedding per day

IV. Unit Cost of Power:

v. Losses in systems with AC and DC loads

VI. Number of solar hours per year = 1500h

Questions:
1. Consider a small household (see II for power usage)
i) How much will be the load consumed per day in Wh assuming that it is an AC system? How much will it cost if it is
all grid-power without any power-cuts? Compute for sunlight and non-sun hours separately!

ii) How much will be the load consumed per day in Wh if it is a DC system? How much will it cost if it is all grid-power
without any power-cuts? Compute for sun-hours and non-sun hours separately.

iii) How much percentage of power could be saved by using a DC system compared to AC? What will be the cost
savings?

iv) If the AC load is to be fed by the grid alone with battery backup, how much load will be consumed from battery
considering load shedding? What will it cost? Calculate sun hours and non-sun hours separately.

v) How much will be the capacity of the battery in question (iv)?

vi) If the DC load is to be fed by the grid alone with battery backup, how much load will be consumed from battery
considering load shedding? What will it cost? Calculate sun hours and non-sun hours separately. What will be the
capacity of the battery in case of DC system?

vii) If the system is a solar AC system being fed by a 125W solar panel, with grid and battery size as in question (iv),
calculate the usage from sun, grid and battery and total power-cost per day.

viii)If the system is a solar DC system being fed by a 125W solar panel, but without grid calculate the usage from sun
and battery and total power-cost per day.

ix)If the system is a solar DC system being fed by a 125W solar panel, battery size as in question (vi) and with grid,
calculate the usage from sun, grid and battery and total power-cost per day.

2. Consider a bigger house with 3 bedrooms (see II in data for power usage)

i) How much will be the load consumed per day in Wh assuming that it is an AC system? How much will it cost if it is
all grid-power without any power-cuts? Compute for sunlight and non-sun hours separately.

ii) How much will be the load consumed per day in Wh if it is a DC system? How much will it cost if it is all grid-power

vii) If the system is a solar AC system being fed by a 1kW solar panel, with grid and battery size as in question (iv),
calculate the usage from sun, grid and battery and total power-cost per day.

and battery and total power-cost per day.

3. Consider a residential complex with 12 flats (see II for power usage).

i) How much will be the load consumed per day in Wh assuming that it is an AC system? How much will it cost if it is
all grid-power without any power-cuts? Calculate assuming that each flat has a separate meter and add to get per
day power costs of the residential complex. Compute for sunlight and non-sun hours separately.

without any power-cuts? Calculate assuming that each flat has a separate meter and add to get per day power costs
