Lesson Title: Masks Around the World Grade Level: K

Skills:
-Students will identify the use of symmetry as well as the expressive qualities of color and
shape during class discussion
-Students will use construction paper and mixed media to design a mask that expresses their
sense of self
-Students will use line, pattern, and color to be self-expressive

Standards:
VA: Cr1.1.K: Engage in exploration and imaginative play with materials
VA: Re8.1.K: List details and identify subject matter of works of art

Overall Lesson Objective:

Given a teacher PowerPoint presentation and visual examples of mask representation in
different
cultures, students will identify the expressive qualities in the elements of the design used
through
line, color, and pattern. Using construction paper and mixed media, students will construct a
mask that expresses their sense of self.

Daily Objectives/Essential Questions/Academic Language:

-Given a teacher presentation and visual examples of mask representation in different cultures,
students will discuss and identify the design qualities of the masks
-Given a 9 by 12 sheet of tagboard, students will use symmetry to design and cut out the base
of their masks
-Given presentation of eye placement, students will accurately place eyes on the mask base

Assessment Criteria: Notes: 1) Link criteria to objectives, 2) Include rubrics, etc. as attachments.
1.Students will actively participate in discussion and properly identify the use of color, line,
pattern, and shape in masks from different cultures
2.Students use a 9 by 12 piece of tagboard, pencil, scissors, and folding method to design and
cut out a symmetrical base for their mask
3.Students accurately placed eyes on mask
Assessment Tool: Observational Checklist
Teaching Resources Needed to Support the Lesson: Note: All background materials, research
documents, and handouts should be listed below and included as attachments.
-Mask PowerPoint -Projector -Computer -At least three examples of student masks

Art Materials Necessary for the Lesson:

Critical Comments and Reflections:

(Problems, successes, and what to think about for next lesson)
This lesson was extremely successful for this group. Having a demonstration of each material
is key to keep things running smoothly. The first day we didnt have a full demonstration of
how to properly cut out the masks, showing them that when its folded in half and only one side
is drawn on when you open it, it makes a symmetrical mask. Having a thorough discussion on
emotions and feelings of colors also made strong connections with past knowledge with the
students.
