race to freedom

Name: __________________
To the Grade 5s of LG26,
You have spoken, so here we are. You are being given the chance to demonstrate
what you have learned since the very start of the year. For this research
project, you will be given general guidelines, but for the most part, you will
have freedom to show what you have discovered with your team. But please note,
you are responsible for filling out your own booklet. If your team members are
absent, you must fill them in on what they missed. How you do that is up to you-
email, phone call, walkie talkie, carrier pigeon, etc.).

Each section of this research project has a quest you must complete. For each
quest that you complete, you get to pick someone to cut out your quest number,
and move it to the finished section of your team banner. You must show the
Quest Master to look over your findings before this happens/you move onto the
next quest. The quality of your work matters! As we go, you must also explain
the connection between key events from Underground to Canada. How does the
book relate to your individual?
Last but not least, each group has 3 cards labelled Google God. What does
this mean?! It means during the entire time you are working on this project, you
can only ask the Quest Master for guidance 3 times. So, make sure you
communicate/cooperate and try to problem-solve with your team, before
sacrificing a card to the Google Gods!
You must finish this project by March 31.

Good luck and may the odds be ever in your favour!

Quest Master

Quest #2

Quest #3
For this quest, you must continuously keep going back to this page. you
have the choice to figure out what works best for your group: either everyone
can read the same chapters at the same time and discuss the connection to your
individual, or someone takes turns summarizing the key events and sharing. Both
carry a lot of responsibility, but I have faith in you!
What you need to do;
- Write 1-2 sentences in your other Underground to Canada page
- Below: write down the chapter #
- Below: how does the key event connect to your individual?
Chapter # How does the key event in this chapter
connect to your individual?

Chapter 9
Chapter 19
Quest #4
Your team can decide to read this together as a group (going around and taking
turns), or reading on your own. Afterwards, you must check-in with each other to make
sure everyone understands the background information. Once the team is ready, beckon the
quest master for a visit. The quest master will test your knowledge!

Background information
Is Underground to Canada based on a true story?
Based partially on a true story, the novel is set in the United States and
Canada in the years leading up to the American Civil War and depicts the hard
lives of slaves in the American South and the people who helped them escape to
Canada via the Underground Railroad. The novel is studied in many Canadian
schools.

Where is the Underground Railroad?

The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses used
by 19th-century enslaved people of African descent in the United States in
efforts to escape to free states and Canada with the aid of abolitionists and
allies who were sympathetic to their cause.

Where was the Underground Railroad started?

The term Underground Railroad began to be used in the early 1830s. In keeping
with that name for the system, homes and businesses that harbored runaways
were known as "stations" or "depots" and were run by "stationmasters."
"Conductors" moved the fugitives from one station to the next.
Why did the slaves escape to Canada?
Underground Railroad. Between 1840 and 1860, before the American Civil War,
enslaved Africans followed the North Star on the Underground Railroad to find
freedom in Canada. It was not an actual railroad but a secret network of routes
and safe houses that helped people escape slavery and reach free states or
Canada.

How many people were involved in the Underground Railroad?

A significant percentage of enslaved African Americans escaped on the
Underground Railroad. Truth: While the number is often debated, some believe
that as many as 100,000 slaves escaped on the Underground Railroad between 1800
and 1865.

When was slavery abolished in the USA?

Passed by Congress on January 31, 1865, and ratified on December 6, 1865, the 13th
amendment abolished slavery in the United States. The 13th amendment, which
formally abolished slavery in the United States, passed the Senate on April 8,
1864, and the House on January 31, 1865.
