Journal Entry #2

Days: 1/15/17 5:00pm-9:00pm, 1/18/17 8:30am-12:30pm

A. Analysis of your experiences as an intern using reflective processing techniques.

In reflecting on week number two, I was able to really learn and experience first
hand the development of a strategic planning. During week one, I was involved in the actual
planning of an event, which was taking place at John Carneys inauguration event. United
Way held the responsibility of creating a book drop for their program as well as developing
a creative strategy to attain volunteers within the community. It was interesting to see the
process of the planning from the very beginning when they were given a week notice to
being at the event myself and carrying out the event.
The event took a huge collaborative effort from not only the community engagement
department, but also from the marketing team as well. The two departments pulled together
to create a productive and successful event. They also had reached out to their current
volunteers in order to participate in the event. Working this event first on allowed me to gain
insight into the impact that Untied Way has within the community of Wilmington. I also was
able to gain more insight into marketing tools and responsibilities that take places within
creating these events, which was more effective than I had ever thought. This was a great
event to be able to be apart of and I was amazed at the efforts of all of the staff considering
that they sacrificed their time to be at an event on a Holiday weekend!

B. Analysis of your strengths and needs related to the performance of the duties of a
Human Services administrator.
In considering my strengths related to the performance of the duties of a Human
Service administrator, I was able to jump right into an unknown environment and was able
to work together with other staff members in order to carry out a plan. I was very much
involved with this project and held responsible for one task through out the night, which was
to promote volunteerism by getting individuals in the community to sign up to volunteer. I
was very interactive with others in the community during the event.
As for my weaknesses and or needs, I was asked to utilize a tool after the event in
order to follow up with the individuals who had signed up to volunteer. I was unfamiliar
with how to merge emails which according to my site supervisor, is a key tool that they
utilize. I had informed my site supervisor that I would need assistance in order to complete
the task because I did not have experience with it. This is also an aspect that I had included
in my learning plan was to gain more knowledge and experience with different tools that the
company uses.
C. A clearly articulated self-improvement plan based on your analysis.
You may also include any miscellaneous information that you believe is pertinent.
When it comes to self-improvement, I am aware that I need to be trained on the tolls
that United Way utilizes. I am aware that every company may use various tools, but it is still
important to breach my knowledge while being here at the internship.
I also would like to explore more of the marketing area within United Way. Their
ability to put together all of the visual aides only a week prior to the event amazed me. I am
curious as to what their resources are as a marketing team as well as their individual ways of
strategic planning.
Lastly, I would like to improve on my knowledge of the program My Very Own
Library. I know very little about the specifics of the program but only a holistic view of the
program. I actually signed up during the event to volunteer to read to the children within the
classrooms. I think it will be a good way to see the benefits of the program hands on.

MOST IMPORTANT LESSON OF THE WEEK HUMAN SERVICES IS NOT JUST A

JOB, ITS A PASSION.
