he late 1980s were a

transitional time in music
history. While heavy metal
and pop still dominated
the airwaves, there was
a new sound emerging. An underground
movement of indie rockers was
beginning to attract fans who had grown
tired of more mainstream fanfare.
One of the pioneers of this alternative
rock movement was the Pixies.
Founded in Boston by college

Thompson IV (who later became

guitarist Joey Santiago, about the
bands history and recent reunion.
The plan was always to get in and out
of there, be international, be worldwide,
he said. We never wanted to be a local
band. If we did, we would have been
a cover band. Our whole intention was
to become something bigger than that
right away, added Santiago.
And thats exactly what happened.
In 1987, while opening for Throwing
Muses, the Pixies were noticed by
producer Gary Smith, who shared their
vision of world fame. Their 17-track
demo, Purple Tape, was released,
followed by their first full-length album,
Surfer Rosa.
Surfer Rosa earned them
international recognition and led to the
bands first European tour. But, despite
critical acclaim, Pixies music was not
for everyone.

Weve always attracted a certain
type of people the disenfranchised
ones, Santiago observed. We were
awkward working the rock n roll scene
in Boston. I felt uncomfortable around
other musicians, and I still do. Im still
getting used to my own skin.
It was those same disenfranchised
fans who kept the Pixies success
growing. By 1991, the Pixies had signed
on to Elektra, a major record label, and
put out four full-length albums. Their
music was increasingly embraced by
critics, especially overseas.
Despite their success, the band was
gripped with internal troubles. The
turbulent relationship between Kim Deal
and Black Francis resulted in numerous
outbursts, including an incident during
a concert in Germany in which Francis
threw a guitar at Deal.
The tumultuous thing is really just
about us struggling within ourselves,
explained Santiago. Were all still trying
to find ourselves, and were honest about
that. Any fighting between us just comes
from this place of not having figured out
who we are yet.
Its that same finding themselves
vibe that led to some of their most well-
known and lauded songs. The vague
lyrics and angular guitar sounds in songs
such as Where is My Mind and Hey
spoke to the sense of displacement that
many young people were feeling.
Were all kind of strange, said
Santiago. If you come backstage, its
kind of creepy. You get a little taste of
that strangeness from our music. In
the end, thats what we give people: our
own weirdness in music form.
The process of making that music
with a group of such fiercely unique
individuals is intriguing.

When we make music we all get to
sit together for a while and make our
own little world and present it in the
form of a song, Santiago said. For me,
it starts with the chords and one or two
lines of the lyrics. The chord forms the
boundaries, the building of the song.
I go into that building and
then thats it, continued Santiago.
Sometimes I can look out the windows,
but then I have to go back into the
building again. And, each time I look
out, the music has become a whole
different scene.
Ultimately, creative collaboration
was not enough to overcome the tensions
between the group members. In 1993,
Black Francis notified Deal and Lovering
via fax that the band was through.
During the years between the
breakup and their eventual reunion
in 2004, each of the Pixies members
embarked on their own series of
creative endeavors. Santiago spent the

recognize the name, but more than
likely, J. Yu is the one leading the next
group of international artists to your
local community. A go-getter with
a zest for life and passion for travel,
J. Yu is constantly developing new
projects and preparing for upcoming

When I finally caught up with J. Yu,
she was racing around town trying to
prepare for exhibitions. She had just
come from Unionville Vineyards, where
she met with American artist Jill De
Felice and dropped off pieces for the
Love N Spring exhibition. J. Yu will
be showcasing her work alongside
De Felice, who has been traveling the
world for the past 20 years.
A completely online operation, the
studio is not bound to a geographical
location and is run by art enthusiasts
for art enthusiasts. With a mission to
bridge cultures through art, StudioYU
selects international artists to showcase
their work wherever the studio is
having an exhibition.

Everywhere is my home, said Yu.
My studio can exist in any corner
of the world its the preservation
of that mobility.
Once artists are chosen, they may
stay with StudioYU indefinitely and
use its resources and support to market
and sell their work. The studio does
not impose a commission fee on pieces
sold, but it is customary for artists to
make a pledge to donate a percentage
of their sales to the studio. StudioYU
is always expanding into new territory,
partnering with organizations and
utilizing their space to exhibit the
artwork. In return, organizations have
the chance to showcase their facilities
to the public.

A key part of StudioYUs mission
is to provide artists with the tools to
market and sell their work and build the
necessary skills to develop themselves
as entrepreneurs in the global arts
market. The studio enables artists to
make contact with prospective buyers
in the market and offers advice through
their website on topics like managing
art on commission and pricing the
value of artwork.
This organization is about getting
the artists to be the entrepreneurs and
engage in the sale and transaction of
their artwork, explained Yu. Its not an
organization that actively participates
in these transactions because it is
a non-profit.
Artists may submit their work on
StudioYUs website to be reviewed by
a board of advisors to determine if their
work falls in line with the vision of the
studio. The artists that are typically
invited to exhibit with StudioYU have
lived overseas, have been raised in
another country, or can bring a unique
cultural perspective to the gallery.
Yu had two pivotal instructors whom
she credits as major influences. Her
childhood instructor, Ching Shyu,
taught her traditional Chinese brush
painting. helping develop her talents in
the practice of Chinese brush painting
on rice paper. Later, she came under the
instruction of Mian Situ, who taught her
Impressionism and western canvas art.
Combining these two techniques is
a challenge for Yu, as is incorporating her
Chinese-American identity into the art.
She is constantly navigating the delicate
balance between these seeming dualities.
With western art oils, you can
layer the paint on top; you can mold it;
it doesnt dry as quickly so you can bend
the art a little bit, but with brush painting
you have to be bold, Yu said. It really
starts with a rice paper piece, and then
having that piece fit onto the canvas
layered it to bring the colors out and
make the work more balanced between
the Eastern and Western techniques.
Yu will be exhibiting her work at
the Trenton City Museum at Ellarslie
Mansion until April 30, and then at
the Mansion Inn in New Hope, Pa., for
the month of May, where she will be
performing live demo, and then a run
at Princeton Abbey from June until

TURNING A HOME INTO

A DESIGNER HOUSE
In March, dozens of designers and
landscapers began transforming Hill
Crest Manor, a Victorian farmhouse on
Burnt House Hill Road in Doylestown,
to serve very worthy cause: The home
has been selected as this years locale
for the Bucks County Designer House
& Gardens event, hosted by the Village
Improvement Association of Doylestown
(VIA) and now in its 42nd year.
The three-story 1808 house already
sports some interesting features, like
cash windows, where farmhands were
once paid, an original hand-pulled
doorbell, and Mercer tile accents. But
when the tour opens on April 30, the
interior will feature a hand-painted
mural by Carol Nagel (who was inspired
by the tall trees surrounding the house
and by the works of Maxfield Parrish),
themed areas including An Evening in
Old Havana, Safaris and Sommeliers,
and a playroom called Pixies Hill.
Visitors will also be treated to beautiful
gardens, including a secret version
surrounded by original stone walls and
can can dine in the onsite cafe, or shop
for home furnishings, garden accents,
and fashion accessories in one of the

One of her favorite stories is that of
a little boy named Brayton who was
originally from Lancaster, Pa., and needed
to travel to the Cincinnati Childrens
Hospital. Brayton and one pilot in
particular, Craig, formed an inseparable
bond. Craig and Braytons family
actually lived within a 10-mile radius of
one another, further strengthening the
families ties. Craig would fly Brayton
from Lancaster to Cincinnati, Ohio, and
stay overnight at his own cost to ensure
Brayton had a flight home the next day.
My favorite moments are actually

Angel Flight East pilots provide
hope that a patient can overcome
a medical journey and come away
cured, thus filling a gap that often goes
unrecognized by the general public.
Ames first heard about AFE from
a Craigs list ad, which she laughs about
in retrospect. She was attracted to AFE
immediately, having interned with the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during
her last two semesters of college.

I had the opportunity to see
firsthand how the organization was
making a difference in the lives of
people diagnosed with this type of
cancer, recalls Ames. That experience
made me want to invest my career
in a nonprofit organization.
AFE also provides compassion
flights for non-medical situations.
Awarded on a case by case basis,
compassion flights have been given
to people visiting a loved one that is
currently receiving medical treatment
or helping with disaster relief, which
coincidentally is how AFE was founded
in 1992 by Harry Morales, a general
aviation piolet who after Hurricane
Andrew wanted to help with the
relief efforts.
Now and then, a passenger flies
into Wings Field and seeing their
positive attitude just makes all the

many others, the organization solidified
and began to fill the gap between the

and the high cost of transportation.
In 1993, the first year of operations,
AFEs small band of new volunteer
pilots flew 17 flights.
Today, 700 to 800 medical flights
are flown each year in the Northeastern
United States, sharing the gift of flight,

Although he conjures up shades
of Johnny Appleseed or Rip Van Winkle,
Albert Large was a real person.
Albert Large His family was well-off and had already

been in America for six generations when
he was born in Buckingham Township
in 1805, and he lived most of his life in
Buckingham and Solebury townships.
Albert was sent to school for a proper
education early in his life, though he
was often truant, preferring to be out
under the open sky.
Sources, especially reliable sources,
are scarce, and in old newspaper articles
and Boy Scout magazines, Albert is
most commonly known as The Hermit
of Wolf Rocks, but I feel like that name
makes him sound like something he
wasnt, really. He did spend much of
his life apart from society. He did live,
on and off, in a cave on Buckingham
Mountain. But unlike your standard
run-of-the-mill hermit, he also loved
the open air, and being outdoors.
It was just that solitude made him
happy. He slept in hollow trees and in
thick piles of fallen leaves. He hunted
to feed himself. He knew how to work
with his hands.
On Friday morning, April 9, 1858, when
Albert Large was 53, he was discovered
inside his rock cavern on Buckingham

mountain. In a time when fact checking
wasnt of utmost concern, a newspaper
picked up the story of a hermit hiding
in a cave in Buckingham, and the news
swiftly went international.
Sensation sold, and soon Albert
was pestered relentlessly by gawkers
from far and wide, eager to travel and
stare at this new strange anomaly.
Every possession found in his cave was
inspected, and before long even the
very mountain rocks were carried away
as souvenirs. That was the end of the
Hermit of Wolf Rocks.
The poor hermit could not stand
such intrusion, and he has gone on the
hunt of a new place where he can end his
days in peace, in true hermit style, the
Bucks County Intelligencer reported.
I havent been able to find any record
of him after that, and I often wonder
what happened to him.
Recently, I was house-sitting at
a property where Albert had spent two
winters in the late 1830s. Above my
bedroom, an ancient, creaky stairway
curved up into the same dark attic
where Albert Large had slept, and
paced, and waited for spring. | r

Certainly, there are the traditional
choices New York strip steak and
Lancaster chicken are both highlighted.
And, yes, the ingredients are high
quality; Owners Joe Grande and Kris
Tomasulo make a priority of using in-
season produce and meats from local
farmers. But one also quickly finds
out-of-the-ordinary choices like wild
boar ragu and duck fries.
There are a lot of restaurants in this
area, but not a lot of diversity in the
menus, observed Grande. They tend
to be one-note kind of places. We saw
ground to do something different,
a little more chic and sexy.

Our goal was to bring a city
level of cooking innovation, upscale
ingredients, high quality service and
beautiful environment, added Grande.
But its also relaxed enough that
people can wear shorts and flip-flops
and still feel comfortable.
The enthusiasm of Grande and
Tomasulo is infectious as they speak
of their plans.
We have a lot of things on the
horizon, Tomasulo explained. This
summer, we are going to re-do the
entire backyard to allow for open air
seating for up to 85 people. Were also
going to have a fire pit, live music every
weekend, and a lot of exciting changes
to the menu.
Listening to the partners speak, one
cant help but feel the sense of adventure in
their voices and dreams, and its a journey
that began many years before the current
restaurant opened its doors in October.
We both spent the last 20 years in
Manhattan, recalls Tomasulo. Being
in the city, youre at arms-length from all
these fantastic restaurants. Often, wed
just pick up and go on spontaneous road
trips. Say, it was a Thursday night, wed
grab a couple of guys and head out to
an obscure Thai restaurant in Queens
that we read about in a culinary magazine
or an old school Italian place out in
Brooklyn. This was back in the days when
people in Manhattan didnt really venture
out to the outlying areas.

And, there wed be out in Queens
where wed find ourselves in some
underground mall with nothing but
restaurants and not a single word
of English, Tomasulo continued.
We got a lot of our recipe ideas from
those adventures.
That diverse New York palette is
particularly reflected in their pastrami
rolls, which combine strong Asian
influences with prime meat obtained
from the legendary Katzs Deli on the
Lower East Side.
But its not just their culinary
experiences that have shaped their
style of cooking. Both men grew up in
big Italian households, where food was
often the central reason for gathering.
It is in that spirit of family meals that

We really try to give it that home-
style feeling, said Grande. We bring
out a big pot of meatballs and sausage
and rolls. Theres heaps of pasta and
salad and Chianti on the table. People
can just sit together and relax and talk
while Frank Sinatra music plays in the
background. Its been a huge hit.
Sunday Gravy Nights are just one
of the many special events coming up
at the Mansion Inn, which include an
evening of high-end bourbon tasting, a
gourmet Italian wine event, and a tequila
dinner to commemorate Cinco de Mayo.
The pairing of alcohol beverages
with plates is something at which both
Grande and Tomasulo excel.
We started off with a solid craft

and special, he added. We want them
on that while making sure to have
staples that our local customers enjoy,
explained Grande. Weve learned that
many people are fond of California
wines, so we make sure to have that,
as well as a range of unique cocktails.
Paying special attention to the
local crowd is clearly a high priority
for the duo.
We are excited about the upcoming
tourist season, but we also know that the
locals are the ones that will keep us going
year-round, Tomasulo said. When we
first opened, people were asking when
local night was, and our answer was,
For us, every night is local night.
We want our restaurant to be
