What is Structural Steel?
Structural steel is a standard construction
material, made from specific grades of
steel and formed in a range of industry
standard cross-sectional shapes (or
Sections). Structural steel grades are
designed with specific chemical
compositions and mechanical properties
formulated for particular applications.

Circular)
Assoc. Prof. Dr. DYeoh david@uthm.edu.my 2014 37

Common structural form applications of different

sections:
UB flexural members: Very efficient sections for
resisting bending moment about the major axis

UC axial member: capability to resist axial loads with

high radius of gyration about minor axis to prevent
buckling

PFC Used for beams, bracing members

Angles (equal/Unequal) Used for purlins, truss

members and bracing members.

Hollow sections Used
