There is a growing interest in archaeology for what concerns the ontological and
relational turn in the discipline. The paper focuses on these recent developments
and it addresses archaeological ethnography as an important source for
interdisciplinary encounters between archaeology, anthropology, and social
sciences. My aim is to briefly present this new field of research, and to highlight its
relevance for my own doctoral research about the relationship between cultural
heritages and human rights in South America. I will provide some reflections drawn
after my preliminary fieldwork in the archaeological site of Tiwanaku (Bolivia) where
I have been able to experiment with archaeological ethnography as a tool for
recovering memories and intimate relations to heritage which are against the official
project of conservation fostered by UNESCO and the State. The significance of
Tiwanaku for ethnic-political legitimisation provides the background for
investigating into the governmental appropriation of indigenous claims on cultural
heritage, in detriment of indigenous peoples rights internationally proclaimed and
guaranteed by the Constitution of the Plurinational State. Ethnographic
methodologies applied to cultural heritage allow to conceptualize archaeology as a
discipline whose concern is the present, and its engagement with the promotion of a
vernacular conception of human rights.
