Grade: Nine Six Lessons 50 Minutes Classes Intro/Philosophy For my unit plan I decided to use cooperative team games as an over arching theme. I chose this unit because I think it would be a strong unit to work on leadership and team building skills within the lessons. These are two qualities that are very useful in the outside world and are skills that more young people should possess. But the activities that are within the unit are fun and engaging, where students may not realize at the time that they are winning the game or completing the task faster due to a great amount of teamwork. I decided to break my unit into six different lessons; the lessons are designed to work well in sequence but with a little bit of tweaking to add a warm up and a cool down, some would be able to be ran as a fill in lessons if needed. I also think that this unit is perfect to incorporated some of the maybe more difficult outcomes such as D9-4, analyze, design and perform warm-up and cool-down activities as well as A9-11, create and plan activities that emphasis specific strategies and tactics that coordinate effort with others. There will be aspects of peer teaching throughout the lesson that will encourage the leadership roll to all students. My teaching philosophy for physical education is to provide my students with a learning environment that is both safe as well as positive for the students, I want them to be able to push boundaries and develop a wide range of skills. To me both health and wellness is a lifetime activity, and as a physical educator I see is as my responsibility to help my students to see this as well as find what they are passionate about in that aspect. I will be there to encourage my students to find activities as well as introduce them to new activities that may interest them more than the traditional sports that they may have experienced in the past. Physical education is more than being active in the gym and in our day-to-day lives; it is about educating students on other aspects of a healthy life style such as nutrition, body awareness, mindfulness as well as leadership, this will help them throughout their life. I will strive to find ways to incorporate these aspects into my daily lesson. Assessment will be completed with input from the students. This unit doesnt focus on finding activities that the may interest students outside of the gym as there would be no way to play these outside of the setting they were played in initially, unless there was a large group get together with someone who was willing to organize similar activities. But this unit fits in with my philosophy because this unit works towards outcomes that are not based upon just being active, it brings in aspects that are going to be beneficial further on in life. By working on both teamwork and leadership throughout this unit it may help some students realize that they love working in groups towards a common goal; but they may not like to achieve this through the route of the more traditional games. Structure and routine are my friend by this doesnt mean that my gym classes wont be enjoyable and active. I think that the relationship that is created with each student is very important, especially for this unit. I will be sure to greet my students each day as they enter the class, I want to be approachable to my students as well as understand them. By knowing how students react to different situations you can put them into groups that are suitable and will help achieve the outcomes. The purpose is not to have one person in each group to take over and run the whole activity presented but to encourage students to push themselves a little further outside their shell to trying to work with others and have their ideas heard and valued. The students will be motivated by both their wellness journal that is an ongoing assignment throughout the year as well as not wanting to let their team down. The games in the lessons need everyone to take part for success of the game. The best motivation in my mind is personal motivation by knowing my students I will know what best motivates them and try to put that into my lesson to make each student do their best. The contract with the students that they help to create will also assist with motivating them. Ending class with giving their teammates compliments will complete how to bring the students up and make them feel appreciated by their team members. Assessment Plan This unit will include both formative and summative assessment. Formative assessment will be given daily to students through observation and verbal feedback. The teacher will also take notes based upon the contract that the class made of students whom are following the description that was giving and areas where improvements could be made. The teacher will share these at the end of the class, not by using names just to encourage and as friendly reminder of what it looks like to be cooperative in a team setting while showing respect to others. The journal questions that will be given at the end of class will be a great self-assessment for the students on how they performed that day towards the goals that were set for them at the beginning of class, as well as on how their group worked together. The journal will be quick entry where there is a scale rating system as well as room for comments on what their thoughts were or whatever they feel they need to write in that section for the day. I will read through the journals and leave positive comments to help the students with motivation as well as be able to see if there are any major issues arising that I may have missed throughout the class, and need to watch for in the next class. This journal will be graded on a pass-fail scale depending on the quality and thought that is given throughout. The summative assessment that will be completed on the student lead warm up or cool down, will be designed from the brain storm that was done on the planning day for the activities. The students will be in charge of coming up with what a good warm up or cool down includes. It will be a checklist that is built and the mark will be based upon how many components of the checklist are incorporated. The main goal of this unit is to improve the teamwork skills and strategies of the students, it is important to see the self- reflection and the interaction that is observed. I must always be able to moving around the gym with my notebook to see how the students are working together and interacting with one and other. The outcomes of the unit will always be posted as a reminder to the students of what is expected and what they are looking to achieve. Also by quickly going over the journal questions at the start of the lesson students will have in their heads what they are reaching for today and thinking about how they are able to accomplish those things within the games.
