SICKNESS AND HEALTH
On this chapter you will find a lot of different activities. They are all about accidents, illness and first aid.
You will find most of the answers in the pages that follow. These pages contain information about:
- Accidents - heart disease
- How diseases spread - cancer
- Fighting diseases - first aid
- Smoking
ACTIVITIES
1. What would you do?
a. You are playing hockey when a friend gets a stick in her eye and starts bleeding badly
b. You are playing football when a friend is tackled, falls and cannot stand up.
c. You find a two-year-old child with an open bottle of bleach beside her
d. Your mother spills boiling water on her arm and then collapses on the floor
e. Your younger brother is unconscious on the floor. He is holding an electric kettle
connected to the mains
f. You disturb a nest of wasps and get badly stung
g. What can you do to help someone who is ill in bed with a high temperature?
FIRST AID
Imagine the scene you are walking to a friends house when a man cycles past you. He swerves to avoid a
car that pulls out, and he crashes into telephone box. He is bleeding and seems to be badly injured. What
would you do first?
Before you read on, write down what you would do.
1. Get someone to telephone for an ambulance.
2. Do not move the man if he is unconscious, or if he has any pain in his back.
3. Is he breathing? Listen for breaths at the mans mouth. At the same time, look if his chest is moving
(A). If he is not breathing, check that nothing is blocking his mouth (like false teeth) (B). Tilt his head
back: this opens the airway to the lungs, and moves the tongue away (C). Now you can give him
mouth-to-mouth ventilation (D, E).
4. Is his heart beating? Mouth-to-mouth ventilation is no good if the persons blood is not flowing. After
a few ventilation, check the mans heartbeat (F).
If there is any pulse (G), carry on with the ventilation. If there is no pulse, listen on his chest for
a heartbeat (H). If the heart has stopped, press down on it hard (I). This pushes blood into the arteries.
Do five slow pushes, down and up. Then give another mouth-to mouth ventilation. Check the pulse
again and repeat the chest presses if there is no pulse. Continue this sequence until help arrives.
5. Is the man bleeding? If there is a lot of blood, press a pad on the wound, or push the sides of a cut
together. If possible, raise the injured part and support it.
6. If there may be a broken bone or back injury, do not move the man. Serious damage can be done by
moving an injured person. Otherwise, put him in the recovery position. Keep him warm until help
arrives. Do not give him anything to eat or drink.
You can learn a lot of more about how to deal with injures if you do a first-aid course.
