Remind students that kings and queens and their children,
prince/ princesses, were the most important and powerful
people in the kingdom. Princes and Princesses grew up getting
whatever they wanted and having servants do everything for
them.

Review the sheikh and rulers of Dubai for the UAE connection

Show students a map of the world on the smartboard and help


them locate the country of Denmark. Point to and explain that
Denmark is a country in Europe. Explain to students that the Smart board
read aloud they are about to hear was published in Denmark in
1835, almost two hundred years ago. Review the word author
and tell the students that the authors name is Hans Christian
Anderson.

Purpose for listening Show students a pea have them feel it.
They can describe a pea to you. Explain they are about to hear
a story about a princess and a pea. Now you will listen and find
out how a pea helps determine who is a real princess.

Read aloud on smartboard and comprehension questions as per


lesson 6 in New York Engage.

Main: Include Guided and Unguided Practice (highlight Chart paper,

Use a three circle map to introduce the story elements of pencil crayons,
character, setting and plot. Draw three circles on a large piece differentiated
of chart paper, labelling the first circle characters, the next worksheets
circle setting and the last circle plot. Draw an extra large
circle for plot to allow six image cards to fit within it.

Tell students about characters, setting and plot and draw in the
circles. Use the image cards to put the princess and the pea in
order. Place them in the large plot circle if possible.

Students will go to their desks and complete activity for


characters, setting and plot.

Low (with TA) students will draw pictures of characters and


setting

Med students will draw pictures of the characters, setting and


plot. They can label.

High students will write the story cube, characters, setting,


plot, etc.

Pick some students to share what they have drawn. Ask them
