Standards (What do you want students to know and be able to do? What knowledge, skills, and strategies do you
expect students to gain? Are there connections to other curriculum areas and subject area benchmarks? )

OAS SS-3.1.3 Identify Oklahomas major landforms and bodies of water on a physical map
including Arbuckle Mountains, Ozark Plateau, Wichita Mountains, Kiamichi Mountains, Black
Mesa, Red River, Canadian River, Arkansas River, Lake Texoma, Lake Eufaula, and Lake
Content Standards Tenkiller, Grand Lake of the Cherokees, and the Great Salt Plains.

1. Creativity and Innovation

a. apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes.
b. create original works as a means of personal or group expression.
NETS*S Standards: c. use models and simulations to explore complex systems and issues.

Overview (a short summary of the lesson or unit including assignment or expected or possible products)

After learning about major landforms and bodies of water in Oklahoma, students will be given a landform or body
of water to write about. Students will then be grouped, and create a three-dimensional replica of a major landform
or body of water with the website Minecraft, https://education.minecraft.net/class-resources/.

Essential Questions (What essential question or learning are you addressing? What would students care or
want to know about the topic? What are some questions to get students thinking about the topic or generate
interest about the topic? What questions can you ask students to help them focus on important aspects of the
topic? What background or prior knowledge will you expect students to bring to this topic and build on?)

1. What Oklahoma landforms and bodies of water are you familiar with?
2. Why are these Oklahoma landforms and bodies of water important to our state history?
3. Where are these landforms and major bodies of water located?
4. How much land do these landforms and major bodies of water cover?

Assessment (What will students do or produce to illustrate their learning? What can students do to generate new
knowledge? How will you assess how students are progressing (formative assessment)? How will you assess
what they produce or do? How will you differentiate products?)

1. The students will study the state of Oklahoma, and what role the landforms play in Oklahomas history.
2. After learning about the landforms in Oklahoma, they will chose one to research and write a one-page
report over. This will help the teacher identify what information they retained from the previous lecture, and
that they know how to look up relevant information on the internet.
3. The students will then be divided into groups to create their landform or body of water on Minecraft. This
project will be graded by a rubric, which will be based off of creativity and accuracy.

Resources (How does technology support student learning? What digital tools, and resourcesonline student
tools, research sites, student handouts, tools, tutorials, templates, assessment rubrics, etchelp elucidate or
explain the content or allow students to interact with the content? What previous technology skills should students
have to complete this project?)

1. Students should have basic knowledge of how to operate a computer and the Minecraft website.
2. Students will need to know how to research a topic, and check the accuracy of that resource.
3. Students will use Google Search to find out about their topic, and use Minecraft to design their
landform/body of water.

Instructional Plan
Preparation (What student needs, interests, and prior learning provide a foundation for this lesson? How
can you find out if students have this foundation? What difficulties might students have?)

To check for prior knowledge to how to operate a computer and Minecraft, the students will have 30 minutes of
free time to create their own Minecraft world. Next, the teacher will ask the students what we look for when
researching a topic to see if it is credible. The teacher will also ask what they know about the state of Oklahoma,
and if anyone has been to any of these landforms or bodies of water. The teacher will spend time demonstrating
how to use a computer, the Minecraft website, and what to look for when researching a topic.

Management (How and where will your students work? Classroom, lab, groups, etc?

The class will spend most of their time in the classroom or computer lab. They will begin studying the state of
Oklahoma, and how to find the credibility of resources in the classroom. Students will then go to the computer lab
to find about a landform of their choosing. Afterwards, students will be broken up into groups of three to help
design their Minecraft world, which will take place in the computer lab.

Instruction and Activities (What instructional strategies will you use with this lesson? How will your
learning environment support these activities? What is your role? What are the students' roles in the
lesson? How can the technology support your teaching? What engaged and worthwhile learning activities
and tasks will your students complete? How will they build knowledge and skills? Will students be
expected to collaborate with each other and others? How will you facilitate the collaboration?)

The teacher will give necessary knowledge about Oklahoma, the requirements of the assignment, the rubric that
will be used to grade the assignment, and assist students in operating Minecraft and researching the state. The
students will be the creators of making a landmark, and then reviewing the landmark for accuracy. Students will
also work together to build off of each other, to collaborate with one another, and to benefit from each others
talents. The students will be required to turn in their own research over their chosen landform.

Differentiation (How will you differentiate content and process to accommodate various learning styles and
abilities? How will you help students learn independently and with others? How will you provide extensions and
opportunities for enrichment? What assistive technologies will you need to provide?)

Students will work in small groups on Minecraft, to help build on each others talents, and the teacher will make
sure that there is at least one student that has basic knowledge to fluency with the computer and the website.
Students will be given a list of websites for the research portion. For children with a reading disability, they will be
given a set of headphones for the research portion. For English Language Learners, they can describe their
landform from their research by describing in through drawing or typing.

Closure and Reflection (Will there be a closing event? Will students be asked to reflect upon their work? Will
students be asked to provide feedback on the assignment itself? What will be your process for answering the
following questions?
Did students find the lesson meaningful and worth completing?
In what ways was this lesson effective?
What went well and why?
What did not go well and why?
How would you teach this lesson differently?)

The students will be required to tell us a few facts about their landform from their research, and show us their
landmark that they designed on Minecraft. The teacher will then give a quiz after presentations to see what they
regained about the landforms of Oklahoma, and important facts about these landforms. The following questions will
be asked after the quiz:
1. Was this research project meaningful and informative?
2. What did you learn from this project?
3. What would you consider a success in this project?
4. What would you say was the most complicated or difficult?
After the survey is completed, the teacher will know what to do for the next group projects, and what to do next year.
