Purpose:
The children have been very interested in Valentines Day and
the whole theme surrounding the holiday. The children usually
correlate the colors red, white and pink with the holiday as well
as hearts. There were large foam heart shapes available within
the classrooms and the children were interested in using the
hearts.
Aila: Vanessa! I want to use the hearts youre holding!
Erika: Are you making an activity? Can we do painting?
Casper: Can we use glitter too?!
Me: Of course! What else should we put?
Aila: The little beads we used yesterday!
Me: Sounds like a plan! Lets do it!
Learning Experience: Valentines Hearts
Objectives:
1.
Materials:
- Small Beads
- Paint
- Paint brushes
- Large Foam Hearts
- Glitter
- Small Hearts
- Paint Palette
Implementation:
1. I was holding the large foam hearts thinking of an
activity to create with the children instead of just
leaving them out for the children to use.
2. One child approached me asking if she could use the
hearts but didnt know what she would do with it.
3. I asked her what she would like to do with it and she
responded by saying she wanted to paint it.

When children initiate experiences, generate ideas, plan
and problem-solve, make meaningful choices and act
spontaneously through play, they are more motivated to
learn and become fully engagedSince the children
were basically planning the activity on their own, it
gave the children a sense of independence and a sense of
initiative.
2. Performing Task Analysis: Each child volunteered and
was given a particular task to create the actual
experience itself using materials and items that they
chose themselves. It is important to let the children be a
part of the planning experience because it allows for
natural curiosity and initiative in the experience itself.
