1- REMOTE I/O INTRODUCTION:

Remote Input Output (RI/O) Concept replaces the conventional cable laying in long runs concept and
provides easy installation, time saving, less supervision, easy maintenance and better reliability.

These RIO panels are equipped with communication modules, IO modules, power supplies, convertors,
etc. which connects all local and near process instruments into it. After this an FO Cable is used which
will be connected to the Main Controller Panel in Control Room and this way a much more sophisticated
method of managing signals is achieved. By adopting RI/O concept, all junction boxes, complete multi
core cables, terminations, large no of marshalling panels etc. can be avoided.

All RI/O panels will be connected in daisy chain pattern and finally one FO cable is required which will
run from end RIO panel to the Main PLC panel placed in the Control Room. Data passing through an FO
Cable is more reliable.

2- COMPONENTSOFREMOTEI/OPANEL:

Remote I/O panels are designed to install and function in harsh environment and having following listed
items to form a complete remote Input/Output system.

1- Bulk Power Supply Module (Redundant)

2- Diode Coupling Module
3- Control & Safety system I/O modules (AI, DI & DO)
4- Communication Interface Module
5- Intrinsic Safe barriers (For Analogue Device only)
6- OLM (Optical Link Module) module for Profibus to Fiber Conversion
7- 8 Port Fiber Optic Patch Panel
8- Fiber Patch cords (Single Mode)
9- Incoming and Isolation power breakers (AC/DC)
10- Terminal blocks (For Field Cable Terminations)
11- Socket switch (3/6 Amps for utility)
12- Tube light
13- 24 VDC Battery Charger

6- AJF PROPOSAL FOR REMOTE I/O CONCEPT:

We have proposed six RIO Panels for Process I/Os like PT, TT, LT etc. and three Safety RIO Panels for
ESBs & MOV ESD Commands which are placed in the below mentioned chambers:

RI/O No. Chamber No. Type of RI/O System

RI/O 1 CH-118 Process I/O
RI/O 2 CH-113 Process I/O
RI/O 3 CH-129 Process I/O
RI/O 4 CH-121 Process I/O
RI/O 5 CH-116 Process I/O
RI/O 6 CH-109 Process I/O
SRI/O 1 CH-118 Safety I/O
SRI/O 2 CH-121 Safety I/O
SRI/O 3 CH-129 Safety I/O
SRI/O 4 CH-109 Safety I/O

7- ADVANTAGES OF REMOTE I/O:

1. Long length instrument cables of 10-11 km will be discarded by connecting all local instruments
to RI/O panels which can give better voltage availability.
2. Laying of instrument cables will be easy due to short lengths if connected to RI/O panels.
3. Easy isolation and maintenance of signals being connected to RI/O panels.
4. No of termination points will be reduced to half if adopting RI/O concept. Terminations required
only at device and RI/O end rather than additional terminations at JB and Marshalling panel. The
number of higher terminations in a loop creates weak chain in the system.
5. Loop checking is simple and required at one point only at RI/O end rather than additional
checking at JB and Marshalling panel end.
6. No. of instrument cable runs required are less if communication is through proposed fibre optic
cable.
7. No. of PLC & ESD marshalling cabinet foot print at Depot control room are less in case of RI/O
and hence easy maintenance possible.
8. Early & easy pre-commissioning and commissioning for entire PLC & ESD system. Loop checking
at one point only rather than doing it at individual JB and marshalling cabinet end.
9. Less no. of duct bank sleeves requirements due to less no. of cables.
10. System is completely scalable and expandable for future expansion if adopting RI/O concept.

DISCLAIMER:

Change in location of Remote I/O system from Inside Valve Chamber to outside is having
followingimpactsanddetailsarenotyetdiscussedandagreedwithclient.

1- Changes in support structures due to RI/O Location change.

2- Additional Duct Bank requirement for connecting RI/O outside chamber.
3- Re-engineering for cable routing layout, Increase/decrease in duct bank sizing etc.
