This van will not go, said Ben.

I can not fix it. We do not have gas.

What can we do?

We can get a cab, said Sid.

Think Critically

1 How do you think Ben feels when the van runs

out of gas?

2 How do Bens feelings change during the story?

3 What songs would you like to hear Ben play on

his sax?

School Activity Have children draw a

picture to show another way Ben could
have gotten to his show.

School-Home Connection After reading

the story, ask your child to name words that
rhyme with van, show, cab, and bus.
