Product Progress Assessment

Introduction and Statement of Purpose:

For my Original Work, I plan to build my own band or ensemble to direct, and ultimately
produce a full concert. This band would be made up of my peers, all volunteers, whom I plan to
reward with service hours. For the concert, I plan to perform three pieces with this band, all
relatively easy in difficulty, as it would work best under the circumstances of time and my own
capabilities as a high school student. The concert will take place in the auditorium of Centennial
High School and will be open to any other students, teachers, and parents who would like to
attend to watch these students perform or for their own personal enjoyment.
Through this project, I plan to gain as much hands-on experience as I can being a high
school senior. I hope to be able to learn teaching techniques and processes I dont know. With the
help of my mentor, I will be able to learn from my mistakes that I will inevitably make and
prevent making the same mistakes when I actually center my career and become a first-year
teacher. In addition, Ill be using the skills taught to me by my mentor, such as lesson planning
and general teaching techniques, and apply it in a real-world setting.

Description of Process:
To ensure the success of these rehearsals, being efficient and effective, I prepared every
night before the rehearsals. The preparation included making notes in my music, and listening to
the music to really understand it and know it. In the rehearsals, I relayed what I wanted the music
to sound like, ran reps with the musicians, essentially trying to run my rehearsals like my
directors do. However, what in these rehearsals most importantly was make mistakes, and lots of
them. The mistakes are the biggest part of the process, they are what show me what I dont know
and what I need to learn. I am given specifics to work on with these mistakes and work through
with Ms. Hatheways help. Through my learning, at each rehearsal the music sounds better and I
grow more comfortable with standing at the podium in front of that many people. I learn what
works best for me, what helps me be efficient, effective, and what helps everyone have fun.
Result/Conclusion:
I was able to learn teaching techniques, experience working with high school students,
learn how to conduct, and learn to work on pacing in these rehearsals. I have yet to have the final
rehearsal or concert yet, which I believe will be a true representation of my overall success.
However, I believe I accomplished minor successes in every rehearsal as I increased the amount
of teaching experience I have and learn from the mistakes I made. These mistakes include
worrying about not knowing what to say to students and thus not saying anything at all which
wastes reps, and letting my insecurities overcome me and inhibit me from putting myself
forward.

Meet with Hatheway about Rehearsals

Objective:
By meeting with Ms. Hatheway after the rehearsals, I hope to receive feedback of how to
teach my group and gain a better understanding of the process. Essentially, actually learning how
to teach rather than making my own inferences from what I observe in my band class.

Description of Progress
Along with my rehearsals, I have regular weekly meetings with Ms. Hatheway at Lone
Star where I am able to observe her teach her class, and reflect back on my weekly rehearsals
with her so we can discuss what Im doing right and what I need to fix. When I observe, I take
notes over her teaching techniques, and afterwards I discuss with her to better understand why
she does what she does. In addition to that, I discuss with her how I felt about my rehearsals, and
ask for her advice under specific situations I feel I could need more help on. She also attends a
majority of my rehearsals, which she takes notes at. We go over her notes which include positive
things I do and areas that I need to focus on to improve and be for effective and efficient. After
each meeting, I take my own notes and include in my lesson plans for each rehearsal points that
she made so I can improve my teaching.
Result/Conclusion:
In the beginning, I held rehearsal without Hatheways help because I did not have her as a
mentor yet. Since acquiring her as my mentor, Ive experience grand improvements in my
teaching, learning, and improvements in the quality of the band. Meeting with Ms. Hatheway has
allowed me to receive direct and specific feedback about my rehearsal, and I learn something
new in every meeting.
