When we first received this project, I was reluctant to the idea of reaching out to people who

specialize in Psychology, the field I would like to work in. I felt as though I had to be strictly

professional while emailing these people who have worked for more than five years to get their doctoral

degree in Psychology, and work with it everyday, while I still have trouble with spelling it. I also

thought these people wouldnt even bother reading an email from a stranger whos a Sophomore in high

school. Although I only got one response, I was still surprised and thankful that even one out of the five
or six people I emailed took time out of their busy day to thoroughly and thoughtfully answer my

questions.

I started by researching psychologists and psychology professors in the bay area, but I opened up

to emailing people with different professions. The women who emailed me back is a social worker who

works for CPS in Santa Rosa named Jeanne Oliver. She previously worked as a child psychologist and

has her doctorate in psych. I started my email to her by introducing myself, explaining why I am

interested in psychology, and listing my goals for the future. I then asked three questions that I had

previously prepared.

The first question I asked was what was it like to major in psychology and how beneficial were

the classes? because I wanted to start off with a general question but one that is necessary to my future

and goals with this specific career. She began to explain that by taking college psych classes, she learned

just how diverse the field is and how many jobs can come out of it. I found this interesting because until

this project, I have known psychology to be the study of behavior and the brain, but she explained new

aspects of psychology I hadnt known before. She also mentioned that the classes were beneficial

because it gave her a much broader sense of the field and I am hopeful the same thing happens for me in

the future.

My next question was are clients generally more open to the topic they are coming for, or is it

more common for them to be shy or nervous? because this was a question I knew the general answer to,

but I wanted to know why clients are generally more shy. She said that it is the therapists job to get

them to open up more and connect with the child. From there, you can build a plan to council and help

them. I have always been curious about the differing moods of a client during a session and how to get

them to open up.

The last question I asked was how often do psych terms and concepts come into counseling? I

asked considering the beginning of my psychology classes starting next year, knowing that the AP psych

class is very much based on vocabulary and terms. She stated that answer is more opinion based but she
felt as though one should not use or teach the clients jargon because it may be overwhelming. After this

she explained how she feels that it is important to counter the excesses of professionalism as a

psychologist because she once had a mentor come in his bike clothes. To be in fancy clothes, separates a

mentor from a client which could again, overwhelm or make the client feel separated; as though their

problems are so far off and different with what their mentor deals with. I could not agree with this more

because I dont believe a counseling psychologist is or should be a professional job. It should give

people who are struggling the chance to connect with someone, without thinking that they only do their

job for the money or to support their family.

In conclusion, I definitely learned more from this project than I thought I would and it

gave me insight as psychology as a major and profession. I would not say it shaped my opinions on

being a psychologist because they were already shaped. This project made me more inspired and

passionate to pursue this as a future career.
