During my IMB experience, I was able to teach a science lesson but I was

not able to observe an instructional science lesson, as the class was focusing on

social studies. On certain days they would have science assignments to do that

they had already been instructed on. They were working on nutrition so my

teacher decided that was the topic I should focus on. There was science

integrated into ELA and social studies during my time at the school, which was

interesting to see integrated studies.

I taught my lesson on nutrition. They had been focusing on MyPlate, so I

was able to integrate that into my lesson. The students were super excited that I

was going to get to teach a science lesson to them, and I was excited myself but

a little nervous. I felt like the student enjoyed the activities that I planned although

the activities werent as hands-on as much as I wanted them to be. Some of the

students were surprised by the information I provided them about food and

nutrition. The students were able to work in groups that were grouped by what

kind of food they were given (i.e.- Grains, Dairy..etc.). Some students liked to

talk a lot in their groups, which was frustrating at times. I was able to ask good

questions about how and why groups do what they do for our bodies and the

students seemed engaged. The students were able to connect this information to

their daily lives because they were able to think about the foods they eat and if

they are good or bad for you, and also what nutrients they attain from certain

foods. I was able to accommodate to different students needs by walking around

during my lesson and asking them questions to make sure they were on task and

understood what was being asked. I used technology throughout my lesson and

I think it really improved how my lesson went because I was able to show the

students what a healthy plate should look like and it is also how I gave the

students their summative assessment. I remember the students being super

engaged and enjoying being able to move around the classroom. They seemed

to like learning about the food groups and why it is important to get all of our

nutrients that we need to be healthy. I would definitely do this activity again and

change it up a little by taking the feedback from my cooperating teacher, and also

to just modify it for the classroom that I would need to do it in again.

During this lesson I learned a lot about myself. I learned that I still have a

great love for science and its awesome to see students show interested and

excitement about science. I also learned that I can plan an awesome lesson but

sometimes there are restrictions like time and resources that may affect the way

my lesson will turn out. Overall, I truly enjoyed teaching a science lesson and

cant wait to teach even more.
