Total Class Time: 90 minutes

Lesson Objectives:

By the end of the class, students will identify five risk factors for
development of feeding disorders in the pediatric population.

feeding disorders in the pediatric population.

3. Powerpoint with Active Learning Activities (30 minutes)

o Slide 11 activity: Have participants eat piece of bread
without moving their tongue as an example of how difficulty
it is to process bread without tongue lateralization
o Slide 12 activity: Imagine youre absolute least favorite food.
Think about how it looks, smells, feels, tastes.now imagine
someone forcing you to eat it. What is your reaction?
o Slide 16 activity: Have them take a drink of apple juice, pay

Eat carrot stick to demo rotary chew
Drink from straw or eat yogurt from spoon to
understand lip closure

3. 5-minute stretch and bathroom break

Have participants pair up prior to beginning discussion on
interventions

partner, Slides 29-40
o Slide 30 activity: Try to swallow with you neck extended;
then practice chin tuck
o Slide 31 activity: Practice 3-finger jaw support
o Slide 32 activity: Practice stimulating tongue lateralization
and placement of food on molar ridges; practice facilitating
lip closure with downward pressure on lip and jaw support;
practice downward pressure with spoon on anterior portion
of tongue
o Slide 34 activity: Practice oral massage
Allow pairs 10 minutes to continue to practice techniques. I would
