Lesson Plan 1

Class being taught: Foundations C Grammar

Juan Escalante
Present Perfect with Since and For

Pre-Assessment Materials
As a form of pre-assessment, students will be asked to recall past Laptop
participles we have been studying throughout the semester. Past PowerPoint Presentation
participles are a vital element of the perfect time framework. Textbook

Lesson Objective(s) The students will be able to
Recognize and use the form for present perfect (have/has+past
participle)
Complete sentences using since and for.
Explain to classmates the meaning of present perfect with since
and for.
Overview Housekeeping Technology Component
The purpose of this lesson is to get the Pray Projector
students to recognize the form and use Take role PowerPoint
of present perfect with since and for. In Irregular verb quiz
order to achieve this goal, we will use Present perfect lesson
timeliness to show exactly what the
present perfect means. We will also
complete a series of exercises in
partnerships to ensure everyone can get
help if needed. We have been studying
past participles since the beginning of
the semester, so that part should be quite
simple.
Review/Development, and Time
Pay and take role. 2 minutes
Do irregular verb quiz (dictation) and trade papers to grade. 5 minutes
As a warm up, write 10 verbs (regular and irregular) on the board. Make 3 lists with the same verbs
but in different order.
Divide the class into 3 teams. Explain that we will do a relay (explain what a relay is) and that the
goal of the game is to fill in the simple past and past participles for the verbs on the board. Once the
first team finishes, the game is over.
As a class, we revise the answers and the team with the most correct answers wins. 10 minutes
Explain that we can finally learn how to use the past participles we have been studying. Explain that
we use them with the present perfect. Write the form on the board and ask them to write it down also.
3 minutes
Use the PowerPoint presentation to explicitly show the form and meaning of present perfect. The
slides explain that the present tense is used to talk about situations that began in the past and continue
to the present. (I have been in class since 8:30 OR I have known Mary for ten years) 10 minutes
Use the PowerPoint slides to explain that when we use since with the present perfect, it simply
indicates the specific time when something started and that when we use for it refers to how long the
situation has been going on. 10 minutes
Use the examples on the PowerPoint to illustrate these ideas. 5 minutes
Turn to the textbook and assign students to work with their partners on exercise 5. After a few
minutes, come back as a class and go over the answers. 5 minutes
After answering any questions that may come up, turn the students attention to exercises 6 and 7 and
have them do them with their partners. Go over the answers as a class. Clarify any points that may
come up. 10 minutes
Use the last five minutes of class to do a quick summary of the lesson and assign homework.
Assignment/Practice Philosophical Justification
Practice exercises 5-7 The justification for the way the class was carried out is that as
Homework: Section 4-2 from students are presented with the form and examples of present
workbook perfect and then asked to do practice, their understanding of the
principle should be clear. Working with a partner is also done by
design so that they can have an opportunity to articulate their
thoughts in a safe environment.
Self-evaluation
Contingency Plan NA
In case students seem confused
by past participles, we can spend
extra time on this part of the
class.
If the projector is not working,
we can use the table on the
textbook since the explanations
and examples are very similar.
