A CHANGING OF THE GUARD AT

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
I
n my six and a half years here, I have edited many a
piece about executive change comings, goings, fir-
ings and hirings. So when it came time to announce
The Hollywood Reporters own news, it was with some of
the natural apprehension about how such news can be
received, interpreted and misinterpreted (inside and out).
Luckily I had the best right hand to help manage the
process in Matthew Belloni. And now, as you may have
heard, Matt has been promoted to the role of editorial
director of The Hollywood Reporter as of Feb. 6. (Applause!)
During our interview together with The New York Times,
Matt talked about something I said in 2010 when I started
at The Hollywood Reporter that he had taken to heart: that

none of the stories or content we would do no picture,
no video, no style story, no business column or analysis,
no feature would ever matter if we werent first relevant
on the news front. That was all true and still is. And Matt
has been at the forefront of leading that news charge here
while also working at my side on all those other bells and
whistles that have made The Hollywood Reporter that deli-
cious, special mix of serious and fun.
So now I am here to say thank you to so many of you for
your support of me and this place and for your friend-
ship as I turn over the reins. I wont be far, and no, Im not
moving back to New York (but thanks for asking a lot).
We can still talk and have lunch and email. But Matt is in
charge. And while Ill remain an owner of The Hollywood
Reporter, Ill be working with our parent company, Eldridge
Industries, not here in any day-to-day capacity.
Matt has said he has big shoes to fill. Well, I am a teensy
ladies size 5. Im pretty sure he not only will fill them but
take some big strides forward with The Hollywood Reporter
as well. Please join me in wishing him well.

or Die will host its Friday night
kickoff party. Already, Vanity Fair
and The New Yorker both of
whose editors have been critical
of Trump have pulled out of
the festivities. (Bloomberg, which
co-sponsors the Vanity Fair event,
will go it alone.)
CBS News and The Atlantic
are moving forward with their
predinner cocktail reception,
and CNN a frequent Trump
target still is planning to have
its Sunday brunch. A CNN source
tells THR that it will have a similar
presence at the dinner; in years

past, the network has purchased
close to a dozen tables. Its unclear
whether CNN Worldwide president
Jeff Zucker will attend.
Its going to be a very different
event and a very different crowd,
says Elizabeth Thorp, Washington
insider and editor of female-
driven digital comedy channel
PYPO. All around town the buzz
is, there is no buzz.
Under Obama, the dinner
came to resemble a Hollywood
awards show. Celebrities (Kerry
Washington, Scarlett Johansson,
the cast of Game of Thrones)
filled many of the 2,670 seats
inside the Hilton ballroom as
media outlets jockeyed to invite
attention-grabbing stars to sit
at their tables. Sources at many
TV news divisions say they have
yet to set their own guest lists,
but all note there will be far
fewer if any invitations to
the Hollywood crowd. There
will be minimal celebrities in
that room, says one Washington
media exec. Its going to be diffi-
cult to get any talent to be there.
Some traditional Washington
media types are happy about this,
having felt squeezed out of their
own event by the likes of Kim
Kardashian in recent years. The
dinner has just been terribly over-
crowded, says one D.C. bureau
chief. So maybe well have a little
more room to move this year.
After all, the event is supposed to
honor the best political reporting
of the past year (some of which
Trump may have labeled fake
news) and also raises money for
journalism scholarships.
As for the celebrity host,
multiple sources say there is
considerable aversion among
performers, especially in the wake

As the nation goes, so goes late night. The broad-
cast ratings race suddenly is red hot again as the
primary trio of hosts takes distinct approaches
now that the 2016 election is a fading memory.
And, for Stephen Colbert, his continued lean into
politics is paying dividends. If Donald Trumps
first 100 days in office are good for anyone, its
the frequently wonkish CBS host. His Late Show,
the most aggressive in its coverage of Trump,
has narrowed the once-sizable viewership gap
with perennial leader Jimmy Fallon prompting
many to wonder how secure NBCs No. 1 status
will be during Trumps presidency. Colbert virtu-
ally tied Fallon the week of the inauguration. And,
in his first full week of original episodes covering
the new administration, Colbert welcomed former
Daily Show host Jon Stewart to take Trump to
task for the Muslim ban and topped among total
viewers. This is a first since his CBS debut in 2015,
no doubt aided by dips on Fallons side. Tonight
started the season pacing more than 30 percent
ahead of Late Show. Since Jan. 1, its only up by
13 percent. In the key demo of adults 18-to-49,
Colbert remains a firm No. 2 close with ABCs
Jimmy Kimmel and the apolitical Fallon may
be veering into current events to keep it that way.

what Fallon doesnt have is Colberts interest in
covering the issues of the day. Stephen and the
writers have a point of view, says one source
close to the show. Its less of a left-wing point of
view and more of a calling bullshit point of view.

With few TV shows canceled and lots still on the
Deal bench, the broadcast networks headed into pilot
of the season this year with fewer needs.

ordered hovered around 70, down from nearly
90 a year earlier. Everyone is trying to be more
disciplined in their approach to volume, Universal

same at CBS and Fox, respectively.
Also aiding certain projects was a home-studio
advantage. Proof: Eleven of Foxs 12 pilot orders have

predominantly from CBS TV Studios. ABC is the
most varied buyer, scooping up projects from five of
the six major studios, but 14 of its 24 orders still come
from ABC Studios. In fact, the desire for ownership
is so great now that one studio exec wonders whether
hell even bother shopping projects to non-affiliated
broadcast nets next season.
When it comes to content, there have been tonal
shifts, too. Among the less subtle: an appeal to

sistently struggles to fill and the
ways that deals have changed in a
400-plus-show universe.

Its happened a few times where Im

Theres been a major diversity push
in television. Have you witnessed
a shift?
Compared to 1998? Yes. But I
feel like [at 20th] for the past
five to 10 years, weve always been
doing it. With more and more
diverse producers and writers
and directors, its a natural pro-
gression. I dont really see it as an
issue anymore.
How do you foresee President
Trumps immigration ban impacting
the casting process?
Im sure everyone is talking
to their immigration attorneys
right now. But I dont know.
Honestly, if youre trying to get
a work visa in three days, who at
Homeland Security is going to
pay attention to you? Ive been
here 16 years and Ive never not
gotten a work visa when Ive
needed it. Im scared ...
Whats the craziest thing youve
done to land a star?
Truthfully, Ill go into [Fox TV
Group chairman] Dana Waldens
office, close the door and say,
Were calling this person now,
and shell rock it. Shes my
secret weapon. But ultimately,
you want someone to come to
it themselves. Thats the thing
about broadcast if youre in it
for 22 episodes for 10 years, you
want the star to want to be there.

generation family drama,
creator Dan Fogelman
had something specific in mind. I
called him about Milo, and he said he
wanted a doughy guy, says Klein, who
pushed for the showrunner to take
a meeting. I kept saying, Meet Milo
because Milo is doughy inside.
How has where and how you
discover talent changed?
We pride ourselves on actors [at
20th], so Id much rather get a
call that so-and-so just graduated
from Juilliard and meet them
than troll YouTube.
What is the hardest part for you
to cast?
The traditional male lead, 35
to 50. Part of it is that that
group the Mark Ruffalos is
only doing movies. And I want
a certain kind of guy. A Kiefer
Sutherland or James Spader an
interesting, dynamic actor, and
those men are needed in features.
A young, hot whomever? I can
find them, no problem.
Why do casting directors so often
go back to actors who have been in
failed pilot after failed pilot?
There are people who you think
will be stars in the right role.
We had a deal with Mandy Moore
for three seasons. She did two
pilots for us, we let her go, and
then we made another deal with
her because I just thought she
was someone who was going to
hit if we found the right thing.
This Is Us was the right thing.
Whats the most sought-after role
for an actor today?
They all call and want to be on a
Ryan Murphy show.

H
ollywood movies often seem to exist
in a netherworld, removed from the
political goings-on of the day and
the great social and economic forces
roiling the nation.
Unlike television, whose lower budgets and
relatively quick production schedules allow it
to respond on a dime to contemporary events,
film lumbers like a locomotive, traveling vast
distances from conception to completion, only
slowly gathering steam and hardly ever shift-
ing course. The fevered subjects that make a
writers blood boil and lead to issue-driven
scripts hardly ever are the ones that hold sway
when those scripts reach the finish line in the-
aters. Politics is all well and good offscreen,
but onscreen it stinks like an old fish.
Thats why movies so rarely are topical, even
when they might seem to be. For anything
thats truly cutting edge, look to TV and
even then, comedy and talk shows, rather than
longform drama.
The films in the running for this years
Oscars are no exception. Any contemporary
political message we read into them likely
is coincidental.
Hacksaw Ridge may appear to address our
concerns following two recent, globe-
changing wars, but its origins date to 2001,
before either of those wars had taken place.
Thats when producer Bill Mechanic first
commissioned a screenplay about World
War II combat medic Desmond Doss, perhaps
thinking about the success of Braveheart
(which he co-financed as a Fox executive)
rather than the Afghanistan and Iraq com-
bat zones that would reshape our notions of
military engagement.
Similarly, Fences, which has been swept
along in the jet stream of the Black Lives
Matter movement and warmed in the embers
of Ta-Nehisi Coates Between the World and
Me, was written decades before either of those
came into being, when August Wilson began
developing his 1987 Pulitzer Prize-winning
play, which would see a major 2010 Broadway
revival before making it to the screen.
Topicality, schmopicality. Movies and poli-
tics rarely share the same bed.
That, at least, applies when theyre in the
development phase. But once a film comes out,
its a whole other matter, and pictures with
any kind of substance inevitably get caught up
in the public debates of the day. They become
litmus tests for peoples feelings about every-
thing from race to religion, from sex to the
state of the world.
Because of that, when the Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences selects this
years best picture on Feb. 26, it inevitably will

Even Hollywood liberals want a break
from the headlines as the escapism
of La La Land and Hidden Figures lifts
their chances By Stephen Galloway
be influenced by the turmoil that has come
in the wake of the presidential election. Each
movie will have to reckon with awards voters
feelings about Trump.
Does that mean the famously liberal group
will opt for the film with the strongest liberal
message? No. Judging from the recent spate of
awards shows, exhaustion has set in. As with
audiences at large, the evidence indicates that
Hollywood favors escapism.
Thats why La La Land, with its record-tying
14 Oscar nominations, has emerged as such a
strong contender in the past few weeks. It side-
steps every issue thats weighing on Hollywood
liberals and urges them instead to dream and
to recall a time when it was bliss to be alive
and to be young was very heaven. Observe La
La Lands trajectory from its debut in late
August at the Venice International Film
Festival, through Telluride and Toronto, past

its record-breaking seven wins at the Jan. 8
Golden Globes and on to its victory at the
Producers Guild awards and youll see how
it has gained momentum. The worse things
have seemed in the country (at least from a
liberal point of view), the better they have been
for the musical.
Same with Hidden Figures. Its upset vic-
tory Jan. 29 at the SAG Awards, where it took
the best motion picture ensemble prize,
wasnt such an upset at all, but rather an affir-
mation that voters want the upbeat. Theyre
looking for a movie that validates their beliefs,
not a reminder of the difficulties those beliefs
still challenge.
Thats one reason why Moonlight,
Manchester by the Sea and Fences have some-
what faded as contenders, even though many
see them as equally well-made films. Their
messages were complicated and even contrar-
ian, when voters want to keep complication
and contrarianism at bay.
The same rationale applies to SAGs acting
picks, the foremost indicator of the Oscars.
Moonlights Mahershala Ali may have played
a drug dealer, but is it possible to imagine a
more decent and dignified one? So his charac-
ter sells narcotics, but otherwise isnt he the
perfect father figure/boyfriend?
As for Viola Davis and Denzel Washington,
the Fences stars may well be starring in a hard-
scrabble story, but theyre also screen icons
whose very presence is reassuring, at a time
when liberals oh so need reassurance.
Emma Stone put her finger on this point
when she was named best actress for La La
Land at the SAG Awards and used her accep-
tance speech to acknowledge a community
thats bringing people joy and making them
laugh and giving people hope.
Such think-positive sentiments will win
friends and influence Academy voters, even
more than usual. Thats because in tough
times, Oscar goes soft. In the aftermath of 9/11,
only one best picture nominee skewed bleak
In the Bedroom. The others were all bright-
eyed, at least when it came to their ultimate
messages (Gosford Park, The Lord of the Rings:
The Fellowship of the Ring, Moulin Rouge and the
winner, A Beautiful Mind).
Historically, the worse Hollywood has felt
(and the worse the world around it has looked),
the better escapism has fared: Busby Berkeley
musicals and Shirley Temple flicks flourished
during the Depression.
Those pictures may have avoided the politics
of their day, but they still sent a clear message,
the one that will likely triumph at the Oscars:
Everythings going to be all right. In feel-bad
times, feel-good films are fine.

uring the past decade,
many movies shot
with digital cameras
have been honored by
the Academy of Motion Picture
Arts and Sciences, including
2008s Slumdog Millionaire, the
first cinematography Oscar
winner to be photographed pri-
marily with digital cameras. And
digital photography has become
commonplace.
Now the makers of five cameras
that helped pioneer electronic
motion picture production will
take a bow themselves as, for
the first time, the Academys
Scientific and Technical Awards
honor major digital cameras.
Recipients of the awards
to be handed out Feb. 11 at the
Beverly Wilshire include
Arri for its widely used Super 35
an SXT model starts at $76,000,
but productions rent pack-
ages that include lenses and other
equipment at widely varying
rates will be given a Scientific
and Engineering Award, as will
Red Digital Cinema, for its Red
Epic (Peter Jackson used the first
Red Epics in his Hobbit movies);
Sony, for its F65 CineAlta cam-
era; and Panavision and Sony, for
the Genesis, which was intro-
duced in 2006 and first used on
Superman Returns. A Technical
Achievement Award will be pre-
sented to an earlier camera, the
Viper FilmStream from formerly
named Thomson Grass Valley.
(Introduced in 2002, the Viper
was used by Michael Mann for
much of 2004s Collateral.)

Um hold on. As one Beverly Hills plastic surgeon says: Men are wimps when
it comes to this stuff, even as occurrences increase 53 percent By Elycia Rubin

n an awards season that

dubbed #OscarsSoMale
for the under-representation of
female nominees, it may be
interesting to note the (increas-
ing) presence of Hollywood men
in another area as well: Males
are going under the needle and
knife for cosmetic enhance-
ment like never before. According
to the American Society for
Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the
number of men having proce-
dures increased 53 percent from
2011 to 2015.
Gabriel Chiu of Beverly Hills
Plastic Surgery notes that
about 25 percent of my patients
are men, and that percentage
is growing. With awards season
in full swing, Chius office is
packed: The face, eyes and hair
really come into play for my male
clients red-carpet appearances.
Most are looking for chiseled
jawlines (dermal fillers, from
$500; no downtime), fewer wrin-
kles or crows-feet (Botox, from
$500; no downtime) and filled-in

Grant Stevens, chairman of the
USC Division of Aesthetic Surgery.
He says more than 40 percent
of his patients are male, includ-
ing Hollywood executives,
actors and athletes who demand
anonymity. In November 2014,
Stevens opened Marina ManLand
in Marina del Rey, a masculine
haven with leather chairs, sports
memorabilia, flat-screen TVs and
treatment rooms named Bears
Lair, Dog House and Lions Den.
Guys immediately feel at ease,
he says.
This is one area where the gen-
der gap penalizes men. Cosmetic
procedures tend to cost more for
men, says Beverly Hills dermatolo-
gist Tess Mauricio: Their surgeries
take longer due to their size
they tend to have a larger body
mass with more prominent fea-
tures and body parts than women.

Mauricio is pioneering a treat-
ment said to increase penis size
(and reportedly help hair growth
over six months): autologous
lipocyte micronized injection, or
ALMI (from $3,500; no down-
time), a 45-minute, outpatient
fat-injection procedure.
Other halves figure heavily in
this rising trend, When a man
accompanies his wife or girl-
friend, Stevens says, shell point
to the skin under his neck or bags
under his eyes and ask me how to
get rid of it. But that quickly gives
way to male vanity, Chiu notes:
Guys go from taking their wives
or girlfriends in, to joining them
for nonsurgical procedures to
now seeking out cosmetic surgery
on their own.

Justin Timberlake is remember-
ing the very first time he got
chased by a mob of shrieking
teenage girls.
I was about 15 or 16 years old,
he says. Wed just given a concert
in Germany at a festival on this
huge field. And we were in the
tour bus afterward, driving on a
dirt road, and I looked out the
window and saw all these young,
impressionable females run-
ning after the bus. He shrugs
his shoulders and gets to the
point of the story: I think we
can all agree that I did not have a
normal childhood.
Twenty years later, at age 36,
Timberlake is having an unusual
adulthood as well. At the moment,
hes lounging at a corner table at
the bar in the Chateau Marmont,
his still-babyish face half hidden
albums sold) and, increasingly,
as an accomplished screen actor
(hell be co-starring with Kate
Winslet in Woody Allens next
movie) that hes learned to wear
his celebrity like a pair of comfy
old hammer pants. Indeed, he
only can barely recall a time when

I have some faint images from
my childhood, he says matter-
of-factly, sipping a beer, but
no, I cant really remember not
being famous.
Right now, in early February, as
awards season reaches maximum
velocity, Timberlake once again
is in the news his song Cant
Stop the Feeling! has been nomi-
nated for an Oscar, the singers
first. He wrote the bouncy disco
tune for DreamWorks Animations

When he was in fourth grade,
he heard about an open call at
a Memphis mall where talent

with his mom to Orlando for a
slot on the show. He ended up

We were at the age when you
just soak in everything, says
Timberlake. We were taking act-
ing classes, music classes, dance
classes. We were learning how
coverage and editing and cinema-
tography work. And being put
in front of a live audience, learn-
ing how to engage the crowd to
get a laugh. Honestly, it was like
SNL for children.

Timberlakes smooth moves
during the shows five seasons
caught the eye of famed music
producer (and, later, convicted
embezzler) Lou Pearlman, who
had just made a fortune launch-
ing Backstreet Boys and was
seeking to replicate that feat. He
offered 15-year-old Timberlake a
spot in his latest boy band and, in
1996, NSYNC released its debut
album. It was an overnight smash
in Europe (especially Germany),
and within a couple years the
group was topping the charts in
America as well with bubblegum
hits like I Want You Back and
Tearin Up My Heart. Before
long, NSYNC was performing at
the Super Bowl, the Olympics and
the Oscars as well as recording
tracks with such music legends
as Elton John, Stevie Wonder and
Michael Jackson. At one point
during the late 1990s around
the time bandmembers started
suing Pearlman for stealing from
them (he died in 2016 in prison)

the group was selling nearly
2.5 million albums a week, eclips-
ing even The Beatles.
Technically, NSYNC never offi-
cially broke up; they announced
a hiatus in 2002 and have not
appeared together since. We
were on a stadium tour, and I just
felt like the whole thing was too
big, says Timberlake, explain-
ing why he decided to bail. It
started as a fun snowball fight
that was becoming an avalanche.
And, also, I was growing out of
it. I felt like I cared more about
the music than some of the other
people in the group. And I felt
like I had other music I wanted to
make and that I needed to follow
my heart.
Timberlake followed his heart
in public for the first time at the
2002 MTV Video Music Awards,
performing his debut solo single,
Like I Love You. The song hit
No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100
chart, and his debut solo album,
Justified, went on to sell 3 mil-
lion copies, but what was really
important about that VMA show
was that it marked the start of
one of the great bromances of
recent pop culture history.
I was hosting by myself for
the first time, and Justin was

Aside from the junior sketch
comedy hed done on The New
Mickey Mouse Club, Timberlake
had acted only once, in a 2000
Disney TV movie called Model
Behavior, playing a male fashion
model who falls for a waitress
(much eye-rolling at the men-
tion of the title). But after his
appearances on SNL, acting
offers started falling into his
lap. Nick Cassavetes cast him for
a small role in his crime drama
Alpha Dog, while Hustle & Flow
director Craig Brewer put him in
Black Snake Moan with Samuel
L. Jackson. How come I cast
him? I saw him on Saturday Night
Live! says director Will Gluck,
who hired Timberlake to star
with Mila Kunis in the romantic
comedy Friends With Benefits. On
SNL, he was so funny and natural
and likable and encapsulated so
many different characters. I just
knew this guy was really good.
Its not known why exactly
David Fincher became interested
in Timberlake maybe hes a
fan of Dick in a Box, too but might be a possibility.
the Oscar-nominated filmmaker
asked the singer to try out for
the role of Napster founder Sean
Parker in 2010s Facebook drama
The Social Network. I went in as
the character, recalls Timberlake
of his audition with Fincher and
writer Aaron Sorkin that ulti-
mately won him the part, his first
dramatic role in a major, high-
profile production. Timberlakes
performance in the film caught
a lot of folks in Hollywood by
surprise From the moment he
comes onscreen, he just claims
it, gushes Jonathan Demme,
who last year directed the Netflix
concert film Justin Timberlake and
the Tennessee Boys and there
even was talk of a best support-
ing actor Oscar. The nom didnt
happen, but the film nonethe-
less widened the singers acting
options dramatically, helping
him land leading parts in big
films (like Bad Teacher, opposite
ex-girlfriend Diaz) and prestige

indie projects (like Joel and Ethan
Coens folk music drama Inside
Llewyn Davis). As Timberlake
succinctly puts it, There are two
parts to my acting career: before
The Social Network and after.
Of course, for serious thespi-
ans, the ultimate status symbol
remains a part in a Woody Allen
movie, even if these days that
honor is mixed with moral com-
plications (Timberlake sidesteps
the ethics: I chose to not get
into it I really dont dive into
any of that stuff with anybody).
Like all of Allens productions,
this one is shrouded in secrecy,
and Timberlake is keeping
his lips sealed. Although judg-
ing from photos leaked in the
fall of Timberlake on the set in a
lifeguard chair wearing a 1950s-
style two-piece swimsuit, Coney
Island may figure into the plot.
In any case, for Timberlake, its
yet another step up a ladder he
never imagined hed find himself
climbing. I cant really say that
doing a Woody Allen movie was
ever on my bucket list, he says,
because I never even thought
that doing a Woody Allen movie

t this juncture of his
career, Timberlake
still is more pop star
than movie star. He
doesnt have his next film lined up
after the Allen project which
wrapped in November but he
sure knows what his next album
will be (even if it doesnt yet have
a release date). Hes been working
on it for months, collaborating
with Pharrell, Timothy Mosley
(otherwise known as Timbaland)
and producer Max Martin (who
helped write Cant Stop the
Feeling! and two of the other
four original songs Timberlake
penned for the soundtrack,
which Timberlake also execu-
tive produced). In fact, just the
other night, he was holed up
in the studio, caught up in a
creative tornado, until three in
the morning. It sounds more like
where Ive come from than any
other music Ive ever made, he

on. Its Memphis. Its Southern
American music. But I want to
make it sound modern at least
thats the idea right now.
Until now, Timberlake has
toggled more or less at will
between the worlds of music and
film, occasionally melding both
(he scored his wifes next movie,
The Book of Love). After his second
album, FutureSex/LoveSounds,
went platinum in 2007, he put
singing on hold and spent a few
years focusing on his acting. Then,
in 2013, he took a break from
acting to resume singing, launch-
ing a two-year worldwide tour
following the release of his third
album, 20/20 (at $231 million, his
highest-grossing tour to date). I
want to do both things, he says.
I really do idolize the golden era
of Hollywood, when actors were
required to sing and move. But Im
just following my gut in the deci-
sions that I make about what Im
going to do next. Im mostly just
glad this is all working out because
I really cant do anything else. Im
not gifted at anything else.
Lately, though, Timberlakes
gut has been acting up, leav-
ing him unsure whether hell be
spending his next few years more
on movie sets or on tour buses.
Part of it may just be age hes
not 16 anymore. Going on tour
is a circus, he says. You set up
the tents, you play the show, you
tear the tents down and go on to
the next place. Its like Groundhog
Day. After the 125th show, you
feel debilitated. Another part
of his confusion may be post-
election jitters: He and his wife

their L.A. home last summer
(filling in for Leonardo DiCaprio
after he canceled his) and
Timberlake, whose musical brand
always has been exuberantly
upbeat, still is trying to adjust
his cultural antennae to the new
world zeitgeist. Everything feels
divisive to me right now, he says.
Everything. Probably the big-
gest reason hes having difficulty
deciding which way to steer his
career, however, is the 2-year-old
who inspired that disco song that
put Timberlake back on top of
the charts last year. Watching
him jump around to Cant Stop
the Feeling! starting to learn
words because of that song its
the best thing in the world, he
says with a giant grin.
Like every new dad, Timberlake
is struggling to make adjust-
ments to the work-life balance.
At first, it broke me down, he
admits. Those first eight months
felt like those old [Ed Sullivan]
shows where people are balancing
spinning plates on poles except
if you drop one, they die. Of
course, kids also have a way of
making parents re-evaluate their
own past, of rethinking their own
choices and wondering whether
their children might find a bet-
ter, easier, healthier way. Would
I want my child to follow my
path? contemplates Timberlake,
pausing for a long swig of beer.
You know, I havent been able to
answer that question in my mind.
If he wanted it bad enough, I sup-
pose I could teach him a lot about
what not to do.

onto Hollywoods A-list
with the triumph of Hidden
Figures, the story of three
African-American women
who each played a key role
in NASAs space program
(a film he chose to helm over
Spider-Man: Homecoming), which has topped
$119 million at the domestic box office.
This success is the least surprising thing
about the 46-year-old writer-director who, as he
celebrates his films nomination for best picture
(and his own for adapted screenplay), reveals
to THR his stranger-than-fiction backstory: He
grew up with a mobster father and a mother who
was a former nun who became his fathers fifth
wife. After his dad, Joseph, turned his back on

the Mafia, the family lost their 26-room home in
Schenectady, N.Y., and moved to a tiny apart-
ment in Brooklyn, where Melfi senior lurched
from affection to violence, from the principled

the philosophical.

the Chunky bar. And I was crying, and I opened
the Chunky bar, and he goes, Eat it! And every-

screaming. And I eat the Chunky bar, crying, with
chocolate streaming down my face. And he says,
If youre going to do something, you better be
good at it, cause life dont treat failures kindly.
After graduating from Missouri State
University, Ted moved to Los Angeles, where
he worked at the small eatery Pasta Place and
as a strip club security guard the worst job he
ever had, he says, given that he never even got
to meet the dancers. He fell into film by accident
when an acquaintance asked if he knew how to
produce. Sure, he replied, raising $600,000 for
1998s Park Day, then helming the low-budget
Winding Roads (1999).

I directed my first feature by reading the
book Film Directing Shot by Shot, he says. I
figured out, theres only six shots in the whole
world. And if theres only six shots, itll be really
hard for me to f it up.
Work on commercials followed including
the viral sensation Pizza Guy, an MTV promo
featuring porn star Ron Jeremy which led to
his 2014 film St. Vincent and paved the way for
Hidden Figures.
Hes very soulful like an old soul who has
been here before and sees things and knows
things, says Hidden Figures Taraji P. Henson.
Hes so nurturing. The way he cared for these
women and for us playing the women, I felt safe,
I felt protected.
Adds co-star Octavia Spencer, who earned a
best supporting actress Oscar nomination for

He recognizes his family has left him with
an unusual mix of sensitivity and insecurity,
but they also inspired his hatred of injustice, the
theme of Hidden Figures. Over a Feb. 1 lunch
at West Hollywoods Terroni restaurant, he told
THR their extraordinary story.
I
grew up quiet, an introvert, a writer.
I wrote a short story called Peter Black
about my dog who got hit by a car and
died, and it won some young writers
award in New York City when I was 8, and I got
to read it on the radio. I wish I still had it.
My mother was an angel, kind and loving
and gentle, but also shy and insecure. She

was a beautiful brunette. But she was barely in a mental institution. She spends several

and the manager looked away.
I grew up where everything in our house was
free. Clothes, food. My dad would get a side of
beef and then butcher it himself and he got
the beef for free, like our car. Everything just
kind of came.
He had a [mob] friend named Tuttie who

boxing ring he had a barber chair, because
he had a haircutting fetish. No one would let
Tuttie cut his hair, because he was the worst
barber in the world. So my dad would go
there whenever he needed money, and Tuttie
would cut his hair and pay my dad $500,
because Tuttie loved to cut hair. They would
spend two hours talking, hanging out, while I
stood there.
He was violent, always. Hed slap you in the
face if you just said the wrong word. And then
in the same breath, hed hug you and cry
cry! and tell you he loved you. He was all
over the place. I loved him, but you could never
predict what he was going to be, who you were
going to get that day. When he walked behind
me, the hairs on my neck stood up. To this day,
if I ever have that feeling, I dont feel safe. I
spent 10 years in therapy.
[For a long time] we all thought he did con-
struction. But [eventually] my mom tells him,
You cant do this. Gods watching. And he
goes, Well, I dont know what else to do. She
goes, You can do anything. So he went to his
people and said, I want to start a newspaper.
He becomes a starving journalist. We lost
our house and had no money and grew up dirt

poor. My two brothers and I shared a little tiny
bedroom in an apartment in Brooklyn.
My dad starts an anti-government news-
paper, basically funded by the mob they
bought ads in the paper. Its called the
M.A.F.I.A. Bulletin Board. And he gets a lot of
heat [from gangsters] for putting the Mafia
name there. A couple of years later, he takes
the word Mafia off the cover to make it
Middle Americas News. He was the head of
sales, the chief editor and the president of

this little paper. And all he did was attack the
government and seek justice for others.
All the mobsters bought personals. These
were all mob businesses: Club Skyway, a social
club in Brooklyn; a concrete block company,
Dragone Brothers. This was the beginning of
my writing career. I had my own column. I got
a quarter a month for writing in the paper. I
wrote about sports, everything.
My dad was crazy, but people loved him. He
wanted to be a politician and ran for gover-
nor, all funded by the mob. He would take us
in the car, the whole family, and we had our
Joe Melfi for Governor hats. And hed ride
around and find wherever [New York gover-
nor] Mario Cuomo was speaking. I remember
Cuomo speaking in a park. My dad got out
with his megaphone and started scream-
ing, You motherfer, you wont debate me!
and screaming and screaming, with all of us
around. And then the police took him away.
My dad had simple politics. He would take
the heads off parking meters and take the
dimes, but hed [use them to] help people,
and his philosophy was: We shouldnt have
parking meters, because we already pay taxes
dealership, and were going to make it new, put
an Italian deli in there, and Im going to run it
and youre going to pay for it. The guy thought
he was crazy. My dad slapped him a couple of
times and got arrested. That was the beginning
of the end. He was starting to lose his mind.
And then he and my mom started really,
really fighting, and she filed for divorce and
got a restraining order in 1987. Every time hed
come back to the house, hed get arrested. It
was very bad. This was a very unstable

My dad was not a good man by any means. He

taxed. He instilled in me a profound interest
in hypocrisy and justice and thats what
Hidden Figures is about. I grew up hating any-
thing that [smacked of] injustice.
My dad did this newspaper for 13 years, and
then he comes home one day and says, We
have to move. Were moving in two weeks.
And none of us knew why. He pulls out an
almanac and he points to Missouri and in
two weeks were in a U-Haul, and we move
to Conway, Mo., [where there were] only 601
people in 1985. I still have no idea why.
Were there for a few months, and my dad
gets arrested for slapping around the mayor.

He tells the mayor: Theres an abandoned Ford
was violent and abusive. Physically, mentally,
emotionally. Thats how I grew up. I grew up
with just pure insanity.
The last time I saw him, I was 16. Hed come
to the house and was being abusive to my
brothers. I was now his size, and bigger and
stronger, and I remember hitting him for
the first time in my life. And then I swept his
legs out, and he fell down in our front yard.
And he looked at me and started crying, and
I started crying. And he got in the car and
drove off. He got in his car and drove away.
I dont know what happened to him. He
died in Hollywood, Fla., and was buried with
no cause of death listed. He was 69 years old. I
never saw him again.

Mary Zophres
To create the clothes for a retro-realistic
Los Angeles, Zophres started in her own
backyard. Director Damien Chazelle cut
together a montage of romantic musicals
and films for visual reference, including
The Band Wagon (1953), Singin in the
Rain (1952) and Strictly Ballroom (1992).
I went to Vidiots [in Santa Monica] and
started renting all the films and printed
up freeze-frame images, says Zophres.
For Ryan Goslings character-defining
two-tone dance shoes, she hit Worldtone
dance store in L.A.s Westwood. (The
style is the Nueva Epoca Buenos Aires.)
Ryan loved them, and they are so right
for [Sebastian]. Emma Stone, as Mia,
had a matching pair. Zophres designed
everything Stone dances in from scratch.
She has such a graceful line, and that
influenced the silhouette, she says. The
yellow dress even has matching under-
wear. For Mias daytime clothes, we
didnt want them to be so high-end that it
didnt look like shed buy them as a strug-
gling actress. Zophres shopped at her
favorite local store, Playclothes Vintage
in Burbank, for pieces, including a pink
A-line skirt she paired with a $5 H&M
top. The navy halter dress Stone wears at
the end is by designer Jason Wu, whose
gowns Michelle Obama wore to both of
her husbands inaugural balls.

Colleen Atwood
With her 12th Oscar nomination, Atwood who has three
wins, for Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha and Alice in Wonderland
ties Sandy Powell as one of the most honored in the craft
(however, they both trail grand dame Edith Head, who is
untouchable with 35 noms). Atwood built 1,000 costumes for
this Harry Potter spinoff and rented an additional 3,000 to cre-
ate the 1920s fantasy world of the film. Her research spanned
the decades, starting at the Museum of the City of New York
with Berenice Abbotts black-and-white photographs that
capture the character and spirit of the street, she says and
reaching back as far as the Salem witch trials, which influenced
the severe plainclothes, Puritanical collars and bonnets of
the films crusading New Salemers. As Newt Scamander, Eddie
Redmayne wore a signature tailcoat dyed petrol blue to pull
him in with his magical creatures but set him apart from the
New York streets. For the embroidered gown and turban worn
by President Seraphina Picquery (Carmen Ejogo) and spunky
beaded flapper dress worn by Porpetina Goldstein (Katherine
Waterston), Atwood looked to the art deco period for inspira-

There was no shortage of primary source material for Boyle
to draw on when researching Jenkins, the titular real-life
1940s socialite (and worlds worst opera singer) played by Meryl
Streep. [Jenkins] loved to get her picture taken, says the
costume designer, who consulted the Library of Congress, The
New York Times archives and society magazine coverage of
ladies clubs. Boyle dyed, inspected and rejected fabric swatches
dozens of times to settle on the films saturated pastel palette,
setting the tone for a childlike quality and unreality. She made
all of Streeps over-the-top looks (worn with generous padding
to plump up her figure), sourcing fabric and trimmings from the
U.S. and Europe. Everything was over-decorated and busy, with
lots of moving parts, flower corsages and feathers, says Boyle.
For Streeps headpieces, angel wings and other performance
props, including the starry Queen of the Night tiara, Boyles
go-to was London-based Robert Allsopp, who has worked on
everything from Gladiator to X-Men.

There were great expectations from everyone about
The Joker [Jared Leto], so I was a little nervous. The

Madeline Fontaine
To tell the story of a bereaved Jacqueline
Kennedys determination to bring prestige
and grace to the presidency, the White House
and the nation, Fontaine meticulously re-
created the first ladys influential 1960s looks.
The most iconic piece, the blood-spattered
pink suit worn on the day of her husbands
1963 assassination, has been preserved in
the National Archives at the familys request,
though we were not able to see the origi-
nal no one is, says Fontaine, who instead
consulted historical photos and TV footage.
For the suit, we hand-dyed the fabric until we
found the right pink for the camera, and then
we made five [versions]. Chanel gave us the
buttons, the chain for the inside of the jacket
(a couture detail to weight the hem) and a
Chanel label in case the jacket fell on the floor.
The red dress the first lady wore for the 1962
TV special, during which she leads CBS cor-
respondent Charles Collingwood on a tour of
the White House, originally was from Dior. We
found the fabric and determined the right color
using camera tests, says Fontaine. We even
had to make a pink version for the black-and-
white shots to match the footage of the White
House tour because the red one was too dark.
Allied sought out London suppliers, including
Johanna Johnson Mackintosh and century-old English
shoemakers Crockett & Jones. For

famous Griffith Observatory, with
its panoramic views of Hollywood,
in Damien Chazelles musical, they
literally become lost in the stars of
the observatorys planetarium a

sequence that contains echoes of
1955s Rebel Without a Cause, which
also used the location. For La La
Land, exterior shots and the lobby
were filmed on the actual site, but
the crew didnt have access to the
planetarium. Plus, Chazelle wanted
to capture an earlier art deco incar-
nation (as it appeared in Rebel), so
a period reproduction was built at
Hollywood Center Studios based
on photographic research. Wasco
says the team located a projector
for the center of the room that was
the same vintage as the one seen
in Rebel, and they also created
copies of the planetariums doors
(bronze with a leather inlay) and
took some liberties with the ter-
razzo pattern on the floor to make it
more art deco, which was a big ref-
erence that Damien gave to the art
department. The ceiling was blue
screen, allowing the filmmakers to
use wires to lift Stone and Gosling in
that transporting dance sequence.

Passengers opulent spaceship, the Avalon,
was imagined with accommodations and
amenities for 5,000 travelers. A first-class
ticket will get you the Vienna Suite, which Dyas
describes as a spacious luxury cabin with
an enormous private window onto the stars.
Fashioned as a futuristic New York City-style
loft, the set becomes one of the center-
pieces for our characters blossoming romance,
followed by the hell that is their dramatic
breakup. I used all kinds of visual cues to help
move our story along with little need for dia-
logue. These curvaceous forms came to me by
making a connection between the endless jour-
ney across space and the iconic Mobius strip
a sort of visual representation of helpless
repetition, feelings our characters would have
experienced. Warm, arresting colors were used
to enhance the slightly unsettling atmosphere.
Despite the modern feel of the interior, you are
initially at ease with your surroundings.
Hail, Caesar!

One of the most elaborate set pieces in Joel
and Ethan Coens 1950s Hollywood-set movie
involves a grand song-and-dance number fea-
turing Channing Tatum, in a Gene Kelly-esque
salute, as a sailor about to head out to sea with
his shipmates. In effect, the challenge was to
build a vintage working set on a period-looking
soundstage. Gonchors solution was to create
a tavern with a nautical theme. I wanted to do a
dingy tavern, in contrast to the white uniforms.
And a theatrical look. I didnt want it to look
dirty but feel dirty. We also wanted to get the
point across that this is how period filmmaking
was done, showing the inner workings of the
old studios and the craftsmanship of the work
that went into a picture. This would have been
filmed before the Steadicam was invented, so
they would have had to get the camera close to
the subject by creating the set in pieces. The
floor pulled apart so the camera could get close
and low enough, and we could shoot the entire
number without cutting.

When Louise Banks (Amy Adams) and her
fellow scientists enter Arrivals mysteri-
ous spacecraft, hovering over the plains in
Montana, they approach what director Denis

of quiet meditation, says Vermette, who built
the set at ADF, an old warehouse in Montreal.
Thats because, during the course of the film,
Louise returns for repeat alien encounters.
Vermette explains: We thought of it as a tem-
ple but also as a classroom. It was important
to use a simple design. We decided to use the
same material throughout the whole set and
stay away from distracting elements. The wall
texture is inspired by sediment rocks, meant to
represent the history and the layers of wisdom
of this unknown alien civilization. Its also a
representation of Louises life as it reflects her
house and workplace. The set has a conceptual
link with all the other sets of the film.

There were seven events in four
days, and I had to design all seven,
he recounts. There was the
opening ceremony on Governors
Island and the closing ceremony
at the Meadowlands. And there
were shows in Central Park, at
Liberty State Park, on Liberty
Island and on Ellis Island. Such
massive live events pose unique
challenges. For example, the
closing ceremony set for the 1984
Olympics had to be installed in
just 15 hours.
Lagler still is at it among his
current projects is a Neil Diamond
concert tour, kicking off April 7.
Im not done yet, he says.

darkness as not seeing, but dark-
ness as pathology. The darkness is
deeply psychological, Young has
said, adding that he and Villeneuve
wanted Arrival to be dark in a way
that makes us a little uncomfortable.
Color was used strategically as a con-
trast to that darkness. It was never
really a striking palette like, these
are the colors youre working with,
said Young. But one of the main col-
ors in the film that really stands out
is the orange of the hazmat suits. We
surrounded the hazmat suits in colors
that would allow them to become
objects within their own [right].
Arrival was photographed with the
Arri Alexa using different kinds of
lenses throughout the film. Even
within a scene wed switch. Different
lens manufacturers have their own
particular personality, he said. That
brings that imperfect, massively
naturalistic feel to the film.
La La Land | Linus Sandgren
Sandgren used magic hour (that
brief period of soft light that hap-
pens at both sunrise and sunset) in
several scenes in Damien Chazelles
musical, including the two-minute
uninterrupted Steadicam shot of
Ryan Gosling singing City of Stars
(one of two Oscar-nominated songs
from the film) on the Hermosa
Beach Pier. We wanted to be out
there a little ahead of time and
started rehearsals around 6 p.m.,
says Sandgren. Between 7 and
7:50, we did about 15 back-to-back
takes without a break. And we
dressed the pier with streetlights
with a green light. By doing that,
we could clean up the skin tones
and add magenta to make the sky a
little more pink. A tricky aspect of
the shot is that the camera moves
360 degrees. Notes Sandgren,

immediate and interesting than
a designed camera shot. You are
experiencing it the same way the
actors are experiencing it. The
extras were mostly local villagers.
We had an AD telling them what
was happening so that we got a lot
of genuine, emotional reactions.
Wealso tried to use as much natural
lighting as possible and remove
as much equipment as possible.
We used very small, inconspicuous
LED lighting.

decision was clear. The timing of the music,
sound we spend a lot of time making that
just right.

built suspense and slowed down time in
a climactic scene between Jeff Bridges law-
man Marcus Hamilton and Chris Pines bank
robber Toby Howard. Their face-off is a slow,
tense final conversation on Howards porch.
The edit was about building tension through
pacing and pauses and without music.
We gave the scene tension music through
sounds of the real world cicadas, a squeaky
windmill, says Roberts. One of the tricki-
est things to navigate was at the end of the
scene: an accusation and Tobys response. If
Toby gave away too much, he would incrimi-
nate himself. We started with too much of a
response, then too little. With careful edit-
ing, he says, he got the balance right.
On Barry Jenkins Moonlight, editors Nat
Sanders and Joi McMillon made the decision
to move the placement of Chirons (Trevante
Rhodes) reconciliation with his mother
(Naomie Harris), who has entered rehab. It
was too early in act three [which begins by
jumping from Chirons teenage years] to have
this emotional scene. We lobbied to move it
further back, says Sanders. Adds McMillon:
This woman was so harsh, so it had to feel
very truthful and play out so that Chiron

soap opera too serious for its own good

It all devolves into a garbage
fire of nastiness, and rarely has
there been a starker example
of the kind of opt-in/opt-out
moment that most series feature
in their first episode. If you want
to see more of these kinds of
over-the-top confrontations, keep
watching because there will be
many more. But if this is the kind
of red flag that scares you off, save
seven hours of your time.

that we dont know who was killed
or who the killer is and flashes
back from there, but within a
shockingly short time of getting to
know these characters, its hard to
care much who gets offed.
Big Little Lies has garnered a lot
of attention because of its cast,
which not only includes Woodley
and Dern but also co-executive
producers Witherspoon and Nicole
Kidman, Zoe Kravitz, Alexander
Skarsgard and Adam Scott. But it
feels like a soapy, expensive ABC

drama with bigger names and
more nudity. Theres nothing
wrong with a sprawling, A-list-
heavy melodrama mystery, but
this ones take-me-seriously tone
and bid for glossy gravitas gets in
the way of the fun.
Witherspoon is Madeline, a
mostly stay-at-home mom whose
in-your-business forthrightness
makes her the center of every
storm. Shes got a teen daughter
giving her grief, a first grader act-
ing like shes 35, a former husband
(James Tupper) now married to
a younger, earthy-crunchy yogi
(Kravitz) and a current hus-
band (Scott) whos annoyed that
Madeline still is hung up on her
ex. Woodleys Jane doesnt fit in
because shes not rich, petty or
suffering from marital problems.
Kidman is Celeste, who has two
adorable twin boys and the so-
called perfect marriage to the
younger Perry (Skarsgard) a
relationship thats almost imme-
diately revealed to be darker than
it looks. And Derns volatile work-
ing woman Renata mother to
the inexplicably named bullying
victim Amabella clashes with
Madeline and others.
The series might have worked
better if it had let the strong cast
make the most of the feverish,
cliche-heavy dialogue; good act-
ing elevates problematic writing
on TV all the time. But theyre
never allowed to fully take control
of the story, partly because an
annoying Greek chorus of parents
keeps popping up, delivering
cringe-worthy lines to investiga-
tors looking into the murder.
When Scotts character, hurt by
Madelines fixation on her ex-
husband, expresses his displea-
sure, were immediately treated
to a woman uttering in gossipy

tones, Scratch the surface of any
Jimmy Stewart? Charles Manson.
Great thanks for the anvil.
If overwritten high drama with
pretensions of insight and impor-
tance is something you enjoy, Big
Little Lies is a must-watch. For oth-
ers, spare yourself the spectacle
of talented people Kelley, Vallee,
the cast slumming.

A Cure for
Wellness
Gore Verbinskis dystopian thriller,
starring Dane DeHaan as an
executive who visits a sinister spa,
is a deadly bore By Todd McCarthy
The only possible cure for A Cure for Wellness
would have been to chop it down to no more
than 79 minutes. Overproduced and under-
thought-out, this attempt at an old-fashioned
Gothic thriller looks great but is beyond
silly. And for those who havent tuned out
before the film staggers to a close after nearly
2 hours, the payoff offers nothing in the way
of genre pleasures or thematic resonance.
After The Lone Ranger and now this, perhaps
its time for director Gore Verbinski to make
another animated film (Rango, anyone?) to
recharge his batteries.
The films most striking images come
at the beginning, with near-dark vistas
of Manhattan office buildings creating a
haunting sense of man-made monuments.
Occupying one tower is a big-league financial
services company at which one man mysteri-
ously dies on the job one night. CEO Harold
Pembroke (Harry Groener), meanwhile, has
taken off for Switzerland just as some legal
guano has hit the fan.
Sent to fetch Pembroke is hustling stock-
broker Lockhart (Dane DeHaan), who looks
about 17. The destination is an opulent old pile
tucked away high in the Alps, a sanitarium
surrounded by grounds on which the white-
clad, mostly elderly occupants play croquet
and drink buckets of water renowned for its
uniquely rejuvenating qualities.
No matter the young mans insistence that
Pembroke be handed over to him at once, the
place has a way of slowing down the pace for
everyone, including the filmmakers; whole
scenes are devoted to dropping just one tiny
morsel of information at a time.
In the meantime, the otherwise bright lad
becomes hobbled by a fractured leg and meets
an odd young lady, Hannah (Mia Goth), who
warns him, You will never leave. Hannah
is like a daughter to the establishments
superficially reassuring but obviously sinister
top dog, Volmer (Jason Isaacs), who knows he
has a wild card on his hands with Lockhart.

Unenthusiastic about the attention Lockhart
is paying to Hannah, Volmer finally gets
down to serious business with the American
interloper, doing to the kids teeth what
Laurence Olivier never entirely succeeded in
doing to Dustin Hoffman in Marathon Man.
Viewers unprepared for how long A Cure
for Wellness runs will be glancing at their
watches in disbelief that after 90 minutes,
then 120, an ending has yet to come into sight.
When Volmer starts lauding his astounding
scientific achievements in the field of longev-
ity, youll know the film is coming out
of the backstretch. When an enormous dance
ball sequence begins, its finishing the far
turn and heading for home though this is
delayed somewhat so that Volmer can explain
his reasons for everything hes done, making
for a very busy and protracted climax in which
one will struggle to feel remotely invested.
The motives for all the nastiness, deceit
and foul play could scarcely be sillier and less
convincing, nor could the rooting interest on
behalf of the alleged protagonists be more shal-
low. Impressive in several indie films (2013s
Kill Your Darlings, for example) up to this point,
DeHaan will need to pick his projects with
more care, while Isaacs has played sinister
much more effectively in earlier efforts (like
the Harry Potter films).
The two strong achievements here are
Bojan Bazellis bold cinematography and Eve
Stewarts resourceful production design,
which effectively mixes motifs old and new.

MEET THE BAFTAS NEW OLD VENUE
The venerable Royal Albert Hall takes over from the Opera House
After 10 years at the Royal Opera House, BAFTA will make a detour for
its 70th edition, due to refurbishments at its regular venue. Naturally, this
being London, its to another world-famous piece of architectural history:
the vast Royal Albert Hall (about a 30-minute Uber ride from the events
usual home). Named after Queen Victorias husband (currently played
by Tom Hughes on PBS) and famously namechecked by The Beatles in
A Day in the Life, the hall with the distinctive red brick exterior arguably
is the U.K.s most iconic venue. It also ups the seating capacity from the
Opera Houses 2,256 seats to more than 5,200.
But besides a few more attendees and a potentially longer restroom
queue, guests can expect a couple of other notable changes.
Once inside, any peculiar props or decorations likely are to be Cirque
du Soleils. The circus Amaluna actually is in residence there until the
end of February and has given up two shows on Feb. 12 to squeeze in the
BAFTAs. But the awards are working around the Cirque du Soleil sets,
with performances from the acts during the ceremony. We could never
really have made this work without the support of the circus, says Royal
Albert Halls head of programming Mehdi Aoustin-Sellami.
And in 2018? The Opera House likely will demand the return of its
prized asset. But who knows? says Aoustin-Sellami. I wont close the

Beyonce and Prince Electrified the Grammys in 04

Beyonce has had more than her share
of big Grammy moments. There
was her 2014 performance of Drunk
in Love with husband Jay Z (with
whom shes currently expecting
twins); singing Proud Mary with
Tina Turner in 2008 and opening
the 2004 awards show doing a five-
minute medley with Prince (who died
April 21 and will be honored at this
years Feb. 12 show). THR called the
performance an arresting combina-
tion. Ken Ehrlich, who has produced
37 Grammy ceremonies, including
2004s and this years, says the pair-
ing arose when he made his annual
call to Prince asking him to perform.
He fully expected the Purple Ones
annual response: Are you going to
pay me $3 million? But that year was
different. Prince, then 45, already had
mapped out the medley he wanted
to do with Beyonce, 22 at the time.
There was one glitch: It was nearly
unheard of for one artist to perform
twice on the telecast, and Beyonce
already was set to sing Dangerously
in Love 2 from her debut solo album.
Theres always a time to break a
precedent, says Ehrlich. And if
there ever was one, this was it. It
would be a major night for Beyonce:
She won five awards, including best
female R&B vocal performance.
As for the medley, Ehrlich says, Its
been 13 years, and people are still
talking about it. So it must have reg-
