POST OBSERVATION CONFERENCE SUMMARY (B)

INDUCTEE: ____ ____ MENTOR:__Nicole Marchese_____

OBSERVATION DATE: __04/05/17__ CONFERENCE DATE: __04/07/17___

COMMENDATIONS:

Mrs. Orbin conducted an individual meeting with a sophomore student pertaining to interests, involvement,
goals, academics, and course selection. A plan for the meeting was well defined. Mrs. Orbins office is
arranged in a welcoming manner. I observed a mutual level of respect between Mrs. Orbin and the student.
Mrs. Orbin engaged and welcomed the student upon her entry into the office. Mrs. Orbin used multiple
techniques during the meeting such as questioning and listening. She also showed empathy and support for
the student as well as advocating for the students needs. Mrs. Orbin adjusted her plans based on the feedback
of the student and individual needs. For instance, she knew when to ask for more information, when to
change the subject, and when to listen to the student. Throughout the meeting, it became evident that the
purpose of the meeting is not only to focus on career, academic, and personal/social development, but also to
build rapport and a trusting, supportive relationship with the student. Mrs. Orbin is developing an awareness
of her students individual needs. She offered follow-up meetings and individualized support to the particular
student. Based on my observations, it was apparent that Mrs. Orbin is attempting to develop connections
with the students, working to develop and sustain a counseling curriculum, and promoting autonomy of the
students.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Ms. Orbin planned the basic content of the meeting and facilitated the meeting by asking questions and
engaging the student in conversation. Even though it was apparent that a clear plan was developed and
followed, I recommend asking more leading or open-ended questions and trying to allow the student to lead
the direction of the meeting. I recommend clearly explaining the purpose of the meeting to the students to
help make the student feel comfortable and know what is expected. To check for understanding, I
recommend considering asking the student to repeat information. This may not be appropriate in all cases,
but might be depending on student needs.

INDUCTEE COMMENTS:

Ms. Orbin commented that through individual meetings she is getting to know students and building rapport.
She also said that through our meetings, meetings with the administration, and meetings with students she is
gaining a deeper understanding of the course selection process and the overall curriculum. She said one
challenge has been finding time to schedule individual meetings with students while not interrupting
academics.
