Activity Description of Activities and Setting Time

Teacher will create two lists on the board. One with food, water,
house, and clothes. The other list will have a phone, video games, a
bike, and chips.
The teacher will ask students if they notice anything about the lists.
1. Focus and Review Could they think of a title for each list?
The teacher will then label the first list needs and the second list
wants. She will then say that we need money to buy both of these
things, which is why sometimes many people create a monthly
budget.
2. Statement of Objective The teacher will say, Today we will learn the importance of a budget for
for Student spending and saving.
Teacher will tell students that they need to know the differences
between wants and needs.
The teacher will ask the students what a want is. A want is something
that makes life more fun and interesting, but you could live without
them if you had to. Ask students to list examples of a want. Ex: video
games, phone, chocolate, a TV. The teacher will then ask students if
they know what a need is. A need is something people must have to
survive. Ask students to list examples of what a need is. Ex: water,
3. Teacher Input food, clothing, shelter.
The teacher will ask students if they know what a budget is. A
budget is a savings plan or a record of actual and estimated income
and expenses over a set period of time. Estimated income is money
that you anticipate earning or receiving for chore completion or
special occasions.

4. Guided Practice The teacher will tell the students they are now going to see what it is
like to have an income. They will have to decide what they need and
what they want with the amount of money they have.
Teacher will split the class into 5 groups. Each group will receive a
budget activity worksheet.
The teacher will go over the worksheet with the class. Each group has
a certain amount of allowance a week. They will need to multiply
their allowance by 4 to see how much money they get a month. They
can then write that in the per month total.
After they get their monthly total they should add their birthday
money and other money to their monthly total. They can write that
total in the subtotal spot.
Next look at the savings area. Discuss with students why it is
important to save. What are some things that people may save up for?
Students should then subtract their savings total from their subtotals.
Students should then put the final amount on the money to spend line.
This is the total amount of money they will have to spend for the
month.
The teacher will tell the students that they will look at the pictures
below and decided what they can buy based off their wants and needs.
They should circle what they want to buy and subtract that from the
money they have to spend. They can not spend more than the dollar
amount they were given.
As a class each group will share the following: amount of money they
had to spend, how they made their spending choices, and the dollar
amount that they had left (if any).
The teacher will Explain to students that the remaining spending
money they have would rollover to the next month and be listed as
other money, if they were to repeat the activity again.
Ask students why it is important to have a monthly budget. Why is it
important to save for the future?

On a piece of paper students will write a definition on what a budget
