Lesson Plan 9-1 Wednesday, March 29

Grade/Subject: 9-1 Mathematics

Unit: Circle Geometry
Lesson Duration: 66 Minutes
OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General Learning Outcomes:

Use direct or indirect measurement to solve problems.

Specific Learning Outcomes:

- Solve problems and justify the solution strategy using circle properties including:
- The perpendicular from the centre of a circle to a chord bisects the chord
- The measure of the central angle is equal to twice the measure of the inscribed angles
subtended by the same arc
- The inscribed angles subtended by the same arc are congruent
- A tangent to a circle is perpendicular to the radius at the point of tangency.

10.1: Describe the relationship between inscribed angles in a circle; relate the inscribed angle and
central angle subtended by the same arc.
10.2: Describe the relationship between chords and radii of circles
10.3: Relate tangent lines to the radius of the circle.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will:
1. Practice finding the inscribed and central angles on a circle.
2. Be able to recognize the arc of the circle
3. Be able to draw and label a circle with the inscribed and central angles, as well as the chord and arc.

ASSESSMENTS

Key Questions:
- What is the central angle?
- What is the inscribed angle?
- What is the chord?
- What is the arc of the circle?
- What is the relationship between the inscribed and central angles?

Observations:
- I will be able to see the students work and drawing on the circles with the different angles and lines that
they will be working with. They will be given a chance to show that they understand the connection with
the angles on the circle.

Written/Performance Assessments:
- Students will be given a circle sheet to work with as they go through this lesson with me.

LEARNING RESOURCES CONSULTED

Resource #1:

- Smart Board - Circle Sheet

- Notebook presentation

PROCEDURE

Before (10 min)

Focus of Inquiry: Assessments:
- Students will be given a question on the board that will get Observe & Ask:
them to critically think about the angles and chords that they
would need to solve the question.
- I will be talk through this question with them, introducing the
new concepts and definitions as we go. These definitions
are the chord, central angle, inscribed angle and the arc.

Task Expectations:

Differentiation:
- Students are allowed to work with one another to find the
answer to the question and give a reasonable response to
how they came to this answer.

During (50 min)

Initially: Assessments:
- I will be talking about the different definitions with the
students and getting them to write down the specific topics Observe & Ask:
in their notes. They will be given an example of each with
the inquiry question that they are given.
- Once students have had a chance to get to know the names
and definitions, we will be going over an example together
that they are to write of their circle sheets. They will then
have a chance to draw a few chords, of their choice, and
find the different angles using a protractor that correspond
with each.
- Once students have a good understanding of the relation
between these topics, they can then work on some of the
word problems in their textbooks in order to have a fuller
understanding of the topic. Textbook Questions:

Ongoing
Differentiation:
- The textbook work is for the students who complete their
work early. On the circle sheet, there will be done chords
given, and then on other circles, students can draw and do
their own chord.

After (6 min)

- Before students leave, I will be calling them back to Assessments:

attention. We will be going over what each definition is once Observe & Ask:
more. I will instruct the students to hand in their circle
sheets before they leave. This will allow me to see if the
students understand the relation between the concepts
learned/taught.

Differentiation:
- For the students who do not finish their circle sheets, they
are to still hand in their sheets. This will give me a chance to
look at them and see if they understand the work they are
doing.
