Start: Lesson Procedure:

Students are to learn about the civil war through the integration with literacy. Students will be split into
6 groups. Each group will have a different article that they must read and answer questions from the
passage independently. After students finish that they will get into their groups and discuss what they
got for all of the answers to compare and explain their reasoning. Then students will come up with a list of
6 things from their articles that they feel are the most important to share about their topic. Students
End: will then write them on a piece of chart paper and have each group share with the class.

Class Activity/Tasks

Independent Practice:
Each student will get a passage relating to the civil war. The passage titles are either Fort Sumter, Abraham Lincoln, The
Emancipation Proclamation, Generals of the Civil War, The Gettysburg Address and The Underground Railroad. I will
randomly number students off into 6 groups. I will give students 20 minutes to read the passage and answer the questions
independently. After the 20 minutes is over I will instruct students to get into their groups to discuss the article and
compare answers. I will then direct students to come up with a list of 6 items from their article that they feel the class
should know. I will give students chart paper to write down the most important information. Students should get about 15
minutes to discuss with their group and come up with their list. Each group should share to the class the most important
points from their passage.

Summary/Closure:
Now that the lesson and assessment is over, the teacher will ask students what they learned today. Ask students for
comments on the topic and ask if they have any questions about the strategy. If students do not completely answer review
the topics of each of the articles.
