Chapter 9: Evaluating Students Learning (pages 303-309) notes:

Defining Classroom Assessment, Measurement, and Evaluation

- Good classroom assessment requires more than tests and quizzes. It requires teachers to
continually gather accurate information about their students progress across a range of
sources, to synthesize that information, to make judgements about how well or how much
each student has learned, and to adjust instruction accordingly. P.304
- Two important purposes of assessment: 1) provides information about the effectiveness of
instruction. 2) the information gained through assessment helps both students and
teachers make more accurate determinations about what an individual student has or has
not learned and why. P. 304
- Assessment requires a wide range of activities from informal approaches. P. 304
- Ultimately, the goal of our assessment or measurement is to make judgements about the
goodness or quality of students performances and, by extension, the effectiveness of
our teaching. P. 304
Factors Influencing Assessment Quality
- Sources of information: 1) students work 2) tests or papers. P.305
- In assessing teachers must make sure that the assessments are accurate. The validity and
reliability are important. P. 307
- Students with special needs should also have accommodations. P.308
Types of Assessment: Formative vs. Summative
- Formative assessment refers to assessment conducted during instruction. Such assessment
provides feedback while it is still possible to influence the instructional and learning
process. P. 309
- Summative assessment is the term used to describe assessment conducted after the
instruction is completed. This type of assessment is used to make final judgements about
a students learning. P.309

Reflection:
Before, I thought there is only one way of assessing: tests. I never thought that there are also
different ways of assessing a student and that there is such thing as formative and summative. I
think, formative assessment is as important as summative assessment, because in formative, the
teacher can still correct the mistake that the student makes, and in formative, the teacher can see
in advance what the student or students are struggling with and the teacher can use this to adjust
his or her lesson. As a future teacher, I want my students to not fear the assessment that will be
given to them, as this affects their performance. As early as now, I should think of alternative
ways to assess my students learning.
