2 / TECHNICAL CONCEPT
AESA suspended access systems are the result of 26 years experience, developed in the
national Spanish market on the first decade, then in the main countries of Europe, and quickly
through the world.
The BMUs have been developed following the requirement of the architect, due to a
multitude of building application, following the design, the norms and safeties.
AESA have installed more than two thousand of units worldwide, often under severe
climatic conditions.
Due to these hard conditions, AESA developed a special coating, based on a hot zinc
spray, and two lyres painting, colour to the choice of the client.
All components are in the majority treated against corrosion, respecting the mechanical
principle.
The roof trolleys run on three or four wheels depending of the weight, the track run way
and the movements of the machine
The grooved hoist drum, the lifting mechanism, assure a total horizontality of the cradle
and a complete security of the users. It guaranties a perfect winding and unwinding of the
four wire rope.
Safety is the most important target for AESA. The machines are equipped with safety
devices, like over speed system, overload detection and all requirement of the BMUs
norms.
The cradle are aluminium made, closed on the four side, with rubber protection and facade
rollers. The length of the cradle can be adjusted following the requirements .
2.2 Concept
The AESA machine are composed mainly with a roof trolley, including the drum hoist,
the three or four traversing wheels (track mounted or trackless), one control panel box, all
the movement safeties, the electric gear motors for all movements, the four wire rope
etc..... The accessibility to the roof trolley is indeed very easy.
The jibs, one or two unit depending of the configuration and the model, with different
length and design.
One aluminium cradle, offered in several length and design.
The design and installation complies with national regulations like ANSI 120.1 (USA),
DTU 95.1 (France), DIN (Germany), PNO 120 (NL).
The AESA machines are also conform to the EC 1808 standard, TUV (Germany).
14
2.3 Components
The roof trolley consists of steel chassis, structure and frame, supporting the rotating fixation
of the jibs , the traversing wheels, and all accessories like electric cable winder, the main
control panel box etc ...
The drum hoist and safeties are non accessible by non authorized personnel.
The machine are moving horizontally by three or four wheels, the two front wheels are
motorized . The roof trolley can be parapet mounted, running on two vertical steel
track, in this case , the two wheels located on the low steel track are motorized.
The motorized wheels are mounted on a strong welded pivoting cage, supporting four
wheel guide, the gear motor, and the steel traversing wheel itself.
The motor is equipped with a disc brake which securely hold the trolley in any position
along the steel rail. Each wheel is mounted with four strong claws that prevents the trolley
from lifting from the track.
The trackless machine is equipped with the same N of wheels, fixed to the roof trolley
with a strong axle, with ball bearing, and nut into a hub. The wheels are steel made, and
recovered by polyurethane tyre. The powered wheels are the same than described above.
In this case , the machine will be guided along the parapet by a steel L profile 10 x 10 cm
or a concrete guide 10 x 10 cm or by two castor wheels on the parapet.
The pivoting and sliding rear wheels are ensuring to the machine to be safe even into the
narrow curve.
The horizontal movement is stopped by two electric detectors installed on the extremities
of the run way.
The Drum is constructed with a heavy steel tube, supported by a transversal shaft,
crossing the drum. The shaft is welded into each end on two heavy steel closing the
extremity of the drum.
The grooved drum winds the four wire rope at the same speed, they are guided with a
spooling system synchronized by a chain to the drum ensuring a perfect and perpendicular
winding of these.
15
The diameter of the drum is calculated following the height of the building. The main size
are 300 mm ; 600 mm ; 900 mm.
The safeties mounted on the drum are : over speed detector, coupled to an electric switch ,
which switches off immediately the operation when activated, and with a centrifugal
device, which will activate a hydraulic brake , immobilizing the drum immediately.
In case of slack rope, the spooling mechanism is equipped with four slack rope device,
coupled to four electric switches , stopping the movement.
The jib support is made by a strong steel tube, supporting two special brackets at each
extremity, where are connected the two jib by four special shaft, locked and secured.
The jib support is moved by a electric spindle bar or by an hydraulic jack, depending of
the length of the jib or of the weight of the cradle.
The wire rope are guided by pulleys from the machine housing to the extremity of the jib.
The jib movement is limited by two electric switches, and secured by two auxiliary
switches.
The suspension wire rope run from the aluminium cradle to, over the jib head pulley, then
through the jib to the roof trolley housing , and then are wound on the grooved drum.
2.3.5 Cradle
The cradle, almost made in aluminium is composed by two aluminium end stirrup, or two
free way stirrup, depending of the requirement, one peripherical aluminium structure, one
anti -sliding floor, totally closed, with four holes to evacuate the rain water.
16
The cradle is completely closed on the vertical walls by aluminium sheet 3/10, a special
stair is previous for access into the cradle.
The four suspension rope are anchored to the cradle by two special devices coupled to two
electric switches, preventing overloading action.
The four wire rope are mounted on calibrated spring, two of them are supporting 60 % of
the weight (lifting wire rope), and the other two, are supporting 40 % of the weight (safety
wire rope).
The cradle can be guided along the facade by cradle restraint system, composed either by
roller installed into a continuous guide on the facade, or by punctual anchorage, bolted on
the facade. In the two case, the cradle or the wire rope, are guided on the entire height of
the facade.
The cradle is equipped with a low trip bar, to avoid to damage the opening windows
during the descent or to stop the machine in low position or on its parking position.
The four steel galvanized ropes are selected following the norms.
The core of each rope consists of either, fibre, or fibre and copper wire for the transfer of
the electrical control signal from the cradle to the roof trolley.
The copper conductor is used only for height bigger than 40 m, the electric cable is used
for the small building
AESA electrical system operate on worldwide electrical current rating, 220 V tri ; 380 V tri,
460 V tri ; 230 V, 50 HZ or 60 HZ
17
The user of the machine can operate only one function at once, by a movement selector.
Operation of the machine from the cradle, is achieved by turning a key located on the
main control panel box on the roof trolley .
Machine is also equipped of a main interrupter, on the roof trolley avoiding use by non
authorized person.
Electric components :
It is possible to control the cradle from the cradle, a second control panel box is available in
the basket.
Information :
Electric motors, ABB or Bonfiglioli, and the Control panel boxes are at least IP 55

4 / TYPE OF CIRCUIT
34
4.1.1 Standard rail track
The rail tracks are usually laid directly on the roof. The machine are counter balanced and
do not require anchorage on the roof. This installation does not require drilling into the
roof slab, which avoid interference with the waterproofing.
If the roofing system cannot bear high compression loading, rail have to be firmly
anchored to the structure in order to reduce the stability and the total weight of the
machine.
The parapet machine is installed to a steel structure attaching to the upper and lower track.
The steel structure is bolted or welded to the parapet. this has the advantage of a complete
installation that occupies a little space on the roof.
Sometimes the parapet is too high to allow the jib to go over it, vertical rail is installed on
the parapet.
When the roof can be equipped of a concrete slab for the traversing of the machine, a
guide can installed at 0.25 m from the parapet, to allow the machine to move on rubber
wheels in this area.
35
36
4.2.1 L profile 100 x 100 x 10 mm.
Hot galvanized L profile, anchored every meters by hilti M 10x25, the profile will follow
the peripherie of the building.
This L profile can be also mounted on the parapet, to avoid waterproofing interference in
the slab.
Directly integrated to the slab, the machine will be guided , following the round of the
building.
In this case, the machine will be guided by two castor wheels mounted on the two front
wheels of the machine. It is used for roof where bolts are not allowed to be drilled in the
slab. In order to change the traversing direction, the machine is equipped with a steering
mechanism, and will be moved from the slab .
37
38
4.3 Rail switches
A rail switch ensures that the machine can traverse either on the same track or negociate a
curve up to 90
Turntables ensure that the rail track can be switched to different direction on the roof, it is
necessary when the free space on the terace is almost reduced to the free space run way of
the machine
