Kannon and Karena Grotegut design their new

home in rural Waukon to accommodate their large family

Deciding on a new home
always involves quite a
process. There are a lot of
decisions to make and things
to take into consideration.
For Kannon and Karena
Grotegut and their family of
rural Waukon, building a new
home ended up being the
best route for them to take.
With six kids, space was a big
consideration for them.
After looking at modular
homes, the Groteguts decided
that it would be best for them to
just build a new home that they
could customize for their family.
Plans for their new home were
drawn up by Shelly Hush.
Prior to moving into their new
home, the Grotegut family had
been living in a three-bedroom
trailer, and they simply needed
more room with such a large
family. In January of this year,
the family was able to move
into its new eight-bedroom,
four-bathroom home, and
everyone is living much more
comfortably.
Construction began last
July when they broke ground
on the project. Kelly Concrete
poured the concrete for the
project. Building materials were
purchased from Ashbacher
Building Supply, with H&L
Construction helming the
project. We would recommend
H&L Construction to anyone,
Karena said.
Electrical work was done
by Dave Cota Electric, and
Kurth Plumbing & Heating did
the work on the plumbing and

Schreiber brings green thumb to
Allamakee County Master Gardeners

When Caroll Schreiber and
her husband, Tom, signed
up for a fly fishing course at
Bettendorf Community College
more than 20 years ago, they
had no idea it would lead to the
place they would eventually
retire.
The entire class was held in
a gymnasium, but they brought
us to Dorchester for our final
exam, said Caroll.
The Schreibers, who were
in their 40s when they took the
class, instantly fell in love with
the area and put it at the top of
their list for where they might
retire some day. They also
considered retiring in Colorado,
but when they thought about
buying a place where they
could spend weekends and
develop over the years, the
fact that Allamakee County
was only three hours from their

shopping around, and

years ago, Caroll said.
The Schreibers worked
during the week, and on
weekends would come to
the 160-acre farm on French
Creek Road in rural Allamakee
County to work on where they
would eventually call home.
Twelve years ago, the
couple moved to their newly
constructed home full time.
Caroll brought with her both
her love of gardening and the
knowledge she had gained
through becoming a Master
Gardener in the Quad Cities.
Becoming a Master Gardener
was a rigorous process in the
Quad Cities. At the time Caroll
applied, there were more than
200 people vying for just 22
spots.

It was quite an experience.
We each had to write an essay,
she said.
They whittled 200 candidates
down to 75, then down to 22.
Fortunately, Caroll made the
cut, after which she had to
attend 40 hours of training, take
a test and complete 40 hours of
volunteer work.
My volunteer work involved
tracking volunteer hours for
our whole club. With over 100
projects going at any one time,
it was a lot of work, she said.

County, she went to the
Iowa State University (ISU)

attached garage.
The Groteguts were able to
do a little of the work on the
house themselves; they did
some of the painting in the
downstairs area. Upstairs,

ONeill and Mary Jo Liddiard.
The Groteguts also did the tile
flooring upstairs, with the help
of friends John, Cory, Krayton,

Places, the Bensons had the
option of pursuing funding for
the improvements through
federal grant guidelines. After

but when it came to windows
and certain other areas, we
wanted to go with more energy
efficiency. We reused what we
could. For example, the front
windows remain the same. The
stone is the same. We took
the front door and made it into
a door in the back. Some of
the windows became transom
windows on the interior. We
left a few touches so people
could see some of the original
construction.
The process of rehabilitation
rather than restoration was the
goal. Restoration involves trying
to make the building as close
as possible to the historically
accurate building, literally,
restoring the building back to
a state similar to the original. A complete gutting of the interior of the Pilot House

was a concrete floor there the
entire time.
One unique feature of that
level of the building is one of
the walls is on hinges so that
when people are moving in or
out, there is a direct access to
the outside from the apartment.
The hinge locks can be
removed, the door can swing
open and the access is easily
available.
All the doors are original
from the upper apartments.
The tenant picked out the
colors and finishes for
the space. That particular
apartment has a courtyard
and patio as well as sharing a
covered parking space with the
other apartments. The upper
level apartments each have a
covered deck space.
The project took two years
but the Bensons did not work
in the winter because there
was no heat in the building.
Ed Benson continued, It was
quite a project. It took a lot
of work but its great to bring
something back from the dead.
Everybody is really happy
there. However, we feel the
credit needs to go to Kerndt
Brothers Bank - especially Jim
Kerndt, Main Street Lansing,
and Fred and Velga Easker, the
occupants of the commercial
space. Rescuing this building
from the brink of oblivion is a
really important project, not
just for Main Street but for the
community of Lansing and its
future.

if I organized them and they
told me to go ahead. Its been
a great group of people to work
with, she said.
The Allamakee County
Master Gardeners do a number
of things throughout the year,
including a spring plant sale,
which will be held Saturday, May
20 from 8 a.m. to noon at the
4-H building at the Allamakee
County Fairgrounds.
We also manage the open
class building at the fair and
host some classes at the
library in the spring and fall,
Caroll said. We decorate the
courthouse for Memorial Day
and do things like install raised
beds, high enough for people
who are in wheelchairs. We
also decorate a tree for the
Christmas fantasy. Its such a
good group of people.

garden. My favorite fruit was
always strawberries, and I grew
up eating out of the garden,
she shared.
Caroll learned the arts of
seed saving, planting and
canning from her mom. Today,
she still has a variety of plants
that came from her mother and
grandmother.
I have Dahlias that
came from my mother and
grandmother. And red tulips
that were my mothers. Most
tulips only last a couple of
years. These I even have to
thin out from time to time, said
Caroll.
This time of year, Caroll is
busy tending seeds she started
in February.
I have an heirloom tomato
plant my mother originally got
from a gentleman along the
river. She always called it the
fishermans tomato. Its a chocolate to make homemade
wonderful tomato. Ive kept the
seeds going for 30 years, she
said.
In addition to starting seeds
in her basement workroom, she
raises herbs and has a cold
frame her husband Tom made
for her.

is long. It includes: pink lilies,
black-eyed Susans, peonies,
cannas, roses, wildflowers,
cone flowers, lambs ear,
thyme, rosemary, garlic,
basil, fennel, dill, oregano,
mint, tomatoes, peppers,
potatoes, onions, grape vines,
cucumbers, squash, carrots,
lettuce, radishes, beans, beets,
zucchini and more. She and
Tom also keep bees that help
pollinate the garden.
I usually grow enough
to share with people.
The grandkids favorite is
homemade grape juice, she
said.
When the workroom isnt
being used for starting seeds,
or processing fruits and
vegetables or deer during
hunting season, Caroll uses the
space to temper large blocks of
candy, a favorite holiday gift for
family and friends.
They really like getting the
candy. Its good stuff, she said.

hit the Upper Iowa River and
the campground was flooded.
The Bresnahans camper that
had housed them during their

was among many destroyed by
flooding along the Upper Iowa
River. The only items that were
salvaged were a cast iron pan
and a pair of Amys cowboy

It was a blessing that we
