Spanish 3 Re-teach of Por vs.

Para

Objectives:
-Students will be able to identify and recall travel vocabulary from Spanish 2.
-Students will be able to aurally comprehend a short story.
-Students will be able to determine when to use por and para.
-Students will be able to correctly use por and para in order to fill in the blanks of a story.
-Students will be able to write sentences in the past tense imagining that they went on a trip to
Per.

Standards:
Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings
and emotions, and exchange opinions
Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of
topics
Standard 4.1: Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons
of the language studied and their own

Materials:
-Powerpoint with vocabulary words
-Story for listening comprehension
-Hand out on por and para
-Cloze activity on por and para
-Individual white boards and markers

Calentamiento: (5-10min) Students write a short article for a magazine about a place they have
visited and what they did before arriving.

Activity #1: (10 min) Students will be given a handout with 12 different pictures that go along
to a story. The story is about a trip to Per. I will read the story in Spanish, and as I am reading,
students will numerically put the pictures in order. The story will be read twice. I will go over the
answers with the class after the activity has been completed.

Activity #2: (20 min) Students will be handed the story that they just listened to. This version
will have blanks for each place where por or para should go. I will read the story out loud as the
class follows along and fills in the blanks. Once the story has been read, we will check our
answers by having students write what they heard on the board. Once we have gotten all of the
correct answers students will be put into groups of three and they will hypothesize about the
rules of use for por and para. Then, they will write all of the hypotheses on the board, using a T-
chart. As a class, we will go over every por and every para in the story to see if they match
up with their hypotheses. We will narrow them down to the correct rules.

Activity #3: (10 min) To organize the rules we have determined as a class students will be given
a handout that explains and gives examples of each of the por and para rules.
Activity #4: (20 min) Using the story about Per as inspiration, students, working in their
groups of 3 will write their own stories about traveling with at least 5 different examples of por
or para. Groups will exchange stories and fill in the blanks to the story. Once students have filled
in the blanks of the story, they will need to identify the rule or explanation for using por or para.

Exit Slip:

The exit slip is base off of the last activity where students complete the story with por or para.
They will fill in blanks missing either por or para. When I check over their answers, I will be
able to tell if the majority of the class understands the rules.
