LESSON 21: Extracting Existing Ground Data for Profiles

To load the Autodesk Civil Design menu, follow these steps

LESSCIN 22: Creating Existing Ground Profile


Working with existing alignments, surfaces, and sampFd data, c*range proftle settings to suit your preferences and create
existing ground profiles.

To work through this lesson follow these steps


1 Start AuloCAD Land Development Desktop if you have not already done so'

2 ln the Today window, clic{< Open to display the Open Drawing: Project Based dialog box.

The default location folder for project files is c:\Land Projects R2. lf you opted to install these files in another loeation
instead, specify the appropriate project path.

3 From the Project Name list select TUTORIAL3, from the Select Project Drawing list, select Lesson-22.dwg, and then
ciick OK.

Working through these lessons will result in alteration of the project files. Backup copies of these projec't files can be found
in the c:\Program Files\Land Desktop R2\Landtut folder.

lf this lesson has been previously run, copy these unaltered project files to the \Land Projects R2 folder when starting a
new tutorial session to ensure that the sequence outlined in each lesson can be followed properly.

Changing Existing Ground Prolile Settings

create.

4 ln the Stationing lncremenls section, enter 50 m for both the Tangent labels and Vertical grid lines values, and then
accept the rest of the default profile values by clicking OK.
Creating the First Existing Ground Profile

Select the current alignment to use for the first existing ground profile.

1 On the Atignments menu, click Set Current Alignment, and then press ENTER to display the Alignment Librarian
dialog box.

2 From lhe Selection list, select Atc, and then click OK.
Create a full existing ground profile based on a single sampled sudace.

B On the View menu, click Named Views to display the View dialog box, under Name, seleet 2, click $et Current, and
then click OK.

4 On the Profiles menu, elick Create Profile ) Full Profile to display the Profile Generator dialog box.
5 ln the Datum Elevation Entry section, enter 220 m for the Datum, and then in the Profile creation parameters section,
verify that Left to Right is selected.

6 ln the Grid Creation section, enter 25 m for the Horizontal spaeing, verifu that the Vertical spacing is 5 m and the Grit
height is 15 m, and then click OK.

Once a profile has been drewn, it may not be moved, since its initial position determines vertical alignrnefit Mim aad
station parameters. lt is recommended that you erase, and then recreate a profile if it is necessary to tepcfin I o you
sheet. A profile may be undsfined, and then redefined if moving it is unavoidable.
Greating the Second Existing Ground Profile

Selecl the current alignment to use for the second existing ground profile'

1 On the Alignments menu, click Set Gunent Alignment, and then press ENTER to display the Alignment
Librarian
dialog box.

2 From the Selection list, select A2c, and then click OK.

3 On the View menu, click Named Vie$rs to display the View dialog box, under Name, select 3, click Setcunent and
then click OK.

4 On the Profiles menu, click Create Profile I Full Profile to display the Prsfile Surfaces dialog box.

5 From the Selection list, select OG, and then click OK to display the Profile Generator dialog box'

6 ln the Profile creation parameters section, select Right to Left, and then selec{ the lmport Left/Rigltt plofiles dpdt
box.

7 ln the Grid Creation section, select the lmport Grid check box, enter 40 for the Grid height, and then click OtC

8 Speciry a sbrting point for the lower-right corner of the profile near the right side of your screen above the plan v*r,
and then enter Ne when prompted lo delete existing profile layers.

Working with existing ground profiles create finbhed ground vertical alignments. ln this example, tre

Drawing Finished Ground Vertical Gurves

Draw flnished ground vertical curves to transition between the finished ground tangents.

1 On the Profiles menu, dick FG Vertical Gurves to display the Vertical Curves dialog box.

2 From the Description list, select K Value, and then elick OK.

3 Select the first finished ground tangent for the Grade coming into PVl, and then select the second finished ground
tangent for the Grade going out of PVl.

4 Enter 16 for the Minimum K value, and then press ENTER to aeeept the default Length of eurve value.

5 Select the second finished ground tangent for the Grade coming into PVl, and then select the third finished ground
tangent for the Grade going out of PVl.

6 Enter 20 for the Minimum K value, press ENTER to accept tlre default length of curve value, and then press ENTER
to end the command.
You now have the finished ground vertical curves for the proposed vertical alignment.

Ilefi ning Finbhed Ground

So far x're vertical geometry has only been generated as objects in the drawing. For the progran b perbrm frs dq*Yt

1 On the Profibs menu, click FG Vertical Alignments i Define FG Centerline.

The A1c-PFGG layer is automatically isolated.

2 Select a point near the lefi end of the vertical alignment for the Starting point, and tten use a uidou sebcin sct b
select-the remaining vertical alignment objects.

3 Press ENTER.

Xs, drawn as temporary vectors, appear at the four PVls on the vertical alignrnent
Generating Finished Ground Labels

1 On the Profiles menu, click FG Veftical Alignments ) lmport-

2 press ENTER to accept the default, Yes, to label tangents and vertical curves, and then pess EI{TER to accept the
default, Yes, to delete the finished ground profile layer.

The finished ground labels for the vedical alignment are automatically generated.

Working with the Vertical Alignment Editor

Make changes to the vertical alignment with the Vetibal Albnment Editor.

1 On the Profiles menu, click FG Vertical Alignments ) Edit to display the Vertical Alignment Editor.

Change the length of the second vertical ourve ftom 92 m to10O m.

2 ln the Edit section, click in the third row of the Curve Length column (92.000), and then click Edit Curve to display
the Vertical Curve Detail Window.

3 Enter {00 m for the Curve length, and then press ENTER.

The associated curve data is updated to reflect the new curve length.

4 Click OK to return to the Vertical Alignment Editor, click Save ts save the changes, and then click OK to continue'

The vertieal atignment has been changed in the project but not in the dran'ing. lmport the vertical alignment into the
drawing again to reflect the changes.

5 On the Profiles menu, click FG Verticat Alignments F lmport.

6 Press ENTER to accept the default, Yes, to label tangents and vertical qrrves, and then press ENTER to accept the
default, Yes, to delete the finished ground profile layer.

The updated vertieal alignment is displayed.
