Think I figured it out - I had enabled 'OK Google' from any screen - turning it back off solved the issue.

Same here. It started happening after the most recent update. I've been scouring but haven't found a solution yet.

I'm having this issue, too. The current version (4.9) and an older version (4.0) are doing the same thing. The problem also persists across reboots and clearing data. The person I'm calling says I sound like a
chipmunk. The echo test service shows the same behavior. My voice is significantly sped up when the message plays back. Video is fine.

Turning off 'OK Google' from any screen worked for me! Brilliant!

Worked for me too. Here are more details, in case anyone's still having trouble:
1. Go to the Google Settings app.
2. Tap "Search and Now"
3. Tap "Voice"
4. Tap '"Ok Google" Detection'
5. Ensure that "From any screen" is de-selected.
(per my Galaxy S4)

Hi
I've got very similar if not the same problem since ive received the latest update either for my phone /galaxy s4/ and also for the skype. The phone runs now on the kitkat 4.4.2 and if i try to make a video
call using the phone, the speaker want to blow, the whole house estate can hear the extreme noise from it. Cant control the volume either.
Sirprisly the normal voice call is ok. Can do the echo call test, works fine what so ever.
Did try to turn off that google search thing, doesnt make any difference.
Please help me, if anybody has any idea or solution.
Thanks a million

I have similar issue with Samsung galaxy S4 T231, which is purchased a couple of weeks back. I have installed sype by dowloading from skype site. Checked and found aduio output is not coming
neitherfrom phone inbuilt speaker nor from Head phone. 3G video call is working i.e audio and video is ok. Skype using Wifi aswell as 3GGSM NETWORK ishaving problem with audio output.i.e unable to
hear otherside voice. Mic is ok. I have purchased this TABexclusively for SKYPE video chat. Now unable to use it. Kinly suggest solution for this issue if any resolved such a a problem.
