[1] ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING CUM
GLOBAL AWARENESS PROJECT
ORIENTATION DAY
The Annual General Meeting cum Global Awareness Project Orientation
Day was successfully held on 13th November, 2016 at Wah Yan College,
Kowloon. The Meeting was joined by alumni and Campers, which marks the
official launch of the 25th Hong Kong Union for Young Leaders, with Campers
and Committee members embarking on a year-long journey. Our Honorary
Advisor, The Honourable Mr. Alan Leong Ka-kit, SC was also with us in such
remarkable morning to give us a few words on his perspective on leadership.
His inspiring speech has certainly encouraged us to work with perseverance so
as to coruscate through the mist in the coming year.

Following the Meeting was the Global Awareness Project (GAP) Orientation
Day, 48 Campers changed into their Outstanding T-shirts and the OUTSTANDING
cheer was introduced to Campers for the first time. With the clues in hand,
Campers found their groupmates and introduced themselves to one another in
the ice-breaking session.

Campers set off to the highlight of the Orientation Day the city-tracing
after lunch, which they were required to present their group names, slogans
and gestures after returning to the school campus. Campers had to located
the checkpoints after decoding the clues given by Committee members, and
to complete the tasks. It was the perfect opportunity for Campers to familiarise
themselves with their newly-met companions, building irreplaceable friendships
along their journey.

After returning from the city-tracing, Campers demonstrated their creativity in

their presentation of group names. Campers then picked their countries based
on the scores of the city-tracing and were assigned with their first task to give
a brief introduction and to identify 2 major problems existing in their designated
countries in the role of Ambassadors. This acted as the preparation of further
discussion on the issues of their countries in the World Congress.

[15] GAP WORKSHOP I
The first Workshop was held on 27th November, 2016 at TWGHs Wong Fut Nam
College. After a few rounds of dynamic cheers, Campers played a cross-group
game to meet Campers from other groups to foster the bonding between Campers
and to facilitate communication in later events.

Following the game was the presentation session, they were required to present
what they have investigated in the past 2 weeks on their assigned countries, namely
Brazil, China, Syria, Zimbabwe, Japan and Germany. Being able to identify the
causes and impacts of the problems, Campers have shown their deep understanding
and analysis on the problems as the Ambassadors of their countries. They have also
demonstrated their critical thinking skills in the question-and-answer session following
their presentations, which Campers were required to respond immediately after a
question was raised.

After the presentation of each group, Campers were engaged in the campus-
tracing session in the afternoon. Through completing various tasks, they have learnt
about the background and mission of organisations worldwide, including the World
Health Organisation, Greenpeace, Fairtrade Foundation and the World Bank etc. After
the session, Campers became more aware of current affairs around the world and
the strengths and weaknesses of their countries through the activity.

GAP WORKSHOP II [21]

The second Workshop took place on 3rd December, 2016 at Belilios Public School.
Campers were split into 3 different groups for the Hunger Banquet in the morning, with each
required to accomplish different level of tasks, which represented the grassroots, the middle
class and the upper class in our community. For instance, the grassroots were involved in
physical-demanding activities; the middle class with more knowledge-based tasks; and
the upper class merely enjoyed the fruit from other classes without having to contribute. After
the exhausting morning, the amount and quality of food were distributed in correspondence
to the classes of Campers during lunch.

The objective of the Hunger Banquet was to simulate the inequality in our society, so
to encourage Campers to reflect whether members of the society receive the harvest they
deserve despite paying much effort.

Campers were soon immersed in the delightful atmosphere of the Cultural

Convergence, which featured customs, traditional dances and other cultural elements. The
splendid performances had given Campers thorough understanding of other cultures. They
have learnt to show respect and acceptance to divergent cultures.

The Workshop came to a conclusion with the Mini Conference, where ambassadors
from each country were divided into 3 groups. Ambassadors had to first present the
background and the problem of their own countries, then they were to discuss and come
up with a sensible action plan on the following aspects: food consumption crisis, public
health and fair trade. The Conference acted as a platform for ambassadors to exchange
information and broaden their perspective so that they would consider the benefits of other
countries in their proposal in the World Congress.

[47][48] WORLD CONGRESS
The highlight of the Global Awareness Project was the two-day World Congress held
from 29th December, 2016 to 30th December, 2016, at Youth Square. Campers, representing
their countries as Ambassadors, had to present their findings on the causes and impacts of
their assigned domestic problem, and propose 5 feasible solutions and a financial budget
plan.

The issues of each country were as follows: high crime rate in Brazil, environmental
crisis in China, terrorism in Syria, currency instability in Zimbabwe, ageing population in
Japan, and refugee crisis in Germany. Each presentation was followed by a 25-minute
enquiry session, in which Campers were required to make quick responses to the questions
raised by the Council members and the representatives of countries.

Yet, after all the presentations, the Congress was interrupted and hijacked by a Hong
Kong-based underground corporation - Rhocteria, by kidnapping one of the Council
members. Rhocteria ordered Representatives of each country to prepare an action plan
and a timeline to solve an assigned local problem and present their proposals in the next
morning. The Congress was shortly under control of Rhocteria and Ambassadors were
dismissed to prepare for the presentation on the next day.

The Congress recommenced after Ambassadors had a long night preparing for tasks
given by Rhocteria, and Ambassadors had to present their action plans in a 15-minute
presentation session upon Rhocteria's request. Following the introduction of their action
plans, members of Rhocteria questioned the feasibility and effectiveness in the 10-minute
question-and-answer session, one again putting the analytical skills of Ambassadors to the
test. After an in-depth discussion on each local issue by Rhocteria, the hijack was finally
resolved as they were satisfied with the effort paid by Ambassadors.

The Council members finally regained possession of the Congress after the retreat
of Rhocteria. Ambassadors were then introduced to the Negotiation Game which countries
could bargain for resources from another country in the exchange of their own. The Game
aimed at striking a balance between the resources in the development of different aspects
of the countries, and ultimately achieve a win-win situation for all countries. In the afternoon,
Ambassadors needed to persuade members of different non-governmental organisations
to fund and support their proposals in the tracing activity after the Negotiation Game.

Each country was then given the opportunity to send a representative to wrap up
their proposal and persuade Council members and Ambassadors from other countries to
support their proposed solutions. At last, the voting session drew the conclusion of the two-
day World Congress.

[70] CLOSING CEREMONY
The Closing Ceremony marked the end of the Global Awareness Project on 21st
January, 2017, at Wah Yan College, Kowloon. In the morning, Campers participated in
a Checkpoint Game, in which they had to complete tasks to obtain materials needed
to construct historic monuments from their respective countries. The session ended
with a presentation by each group, and allowed Campers to gain a brief insight into
the diverging culture across the globe.

Later on during the day, Campers enjoyed the New Year Video shot by the
other groups filled with warm blessings for the festive season, as well as a slideshow
of photos shot during the official events of the project. The Closing Ceremony was
rounded up with the distribution of Certificates and back-writing.
