Initial Concept
Use off-the shelf components to construct a device for
measuring how powerful an athlete is. Transmit data to
a smartphone for storing and displaying results.

Initial Metrics:
1. Power
2. Acceleration
3. Jerk

Background Research & Survey Results

Assembled House of Quality (HOQ) results from:
Market assessment
Competitor Assessment
Background research on power & strength training

Common Survey feedback:

A power measurement device would be useful to track their clients progress &
overall health
Jerk is not a significant measurement for athletics
Common power measuring exercises: bench press, deadlift, and squat

Project Redefinition
Need Statement
The market for wearable power measurement devices lacks an all encompassing product that
is both accurate and affordable.

Goal Statement
Use off the shelf components to create a strength training workout assistant that will sync to a
smartphone app. Features will include heart rate monitoring and power & strength metrics to
create a more complete user workout.

Target Market
Professional/Advanced Athletes and their trainers, intermediate to advanced gym-goers

Prototype 3 Assembly & Testing

Addition of Pulse Rate Monitor
requires use of Inter-integrated
Circuit (I2C) Protocol

I2C Ports are currently being used by

the accelerometer & gyroscope

Presents wiring complexities

Microcontroller can only read data

from 1 sensor at a time Figure 14. Prototype 3 Components

Additional Design Updates

2.2
Casing
Will be redesigned for stage 3
testing
Most likely will exceed original
2x2x2 size constraints due to
addition of wires 1.75

Mobile Application
Can read data to and from device
and phone
Currently working on output of
data to app and graph display
