Unit Rates and Proportionality

Finding the Unit Rate- Seventh Grade

Olivia Simpson

Standard:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.7.RP.A.1Analyze proportional relationships and use them to
solve real-world and mathematical problems.

Performance Indicator:
6.N.7 Express equivalent ratios as a proportion.

Valued Outcome:
Students will be able to discover the unit rate of sugar per serving in soft drinks and
varieties of candy. They will be able to create a table, and show proportionality of the
unit rate in a graph.

Description of Strategy:
1. Directions: The students sit at two long tables in the classroom. One table will be set
up with soft drinks and the other with candy. I will immediately start with directions. I
will tell them that we are doing an experiment today to try to find the unit rate of sugar in
each serving. I will pass out a worksheet that I have made to each student. On the
worksheet there is room to find the unit rate of each drink or each candy
2. Activity: I will allow the students to have a few minutes of quiet think time. They will
try to discover the first step they will need to make to find what I am asking. Then I will
allow them to discuss with their partners on how to find the unit rate. They will work
together to find the unit rate. After they find the unit rate, they can then find 4 more ratios
that are proportional to the unit rate. After they finish this, they can graph the grams of
sugar per serving on a table graph so they can visually see which has more sugar. After
each table is done, they will then switch to the next table to work with the drinks or the
candy.
3. Closure: At the end, I will ask a few volunteers to announce what their final answers
were.

Materials Needed:
Varieties of drinks and candy
Worksheets

Formative Evaluation:
The formative evaluation will be when I ask volunteers for their groups final answers.
This will allow me to see if every group developed the right answers.

Points of Emphasis:
This shows that unit rates can be used in the real world.
