Shannon Skelton Laurie Harmon

Westview High School/Chemistry, Physics Teacher Consultant

Certificated Evaluation
January 2017

Shannon is a first year teacher with the Poway Unified School District. Shannons assignment, for the 2016-2017 school
year, is a 100% teaching position in Chemistry and Physics at Westview High School. Shannon started at Westview the
last half of the 2015-2016 year. Since this is her first full year teaching in our district, she participates in the Poway
Professional Assistance Program (PPAP). The following summary combines formal and informal observations for the
purpose of a summative evaluation.
COMMENDATIONS:
Domain I- Accomplished Teachers Understand and Organize Subject Matter for Student Learning
Shannon designs her lessons with academic standards and incorporates the Next Generation Science Standards into her
curriculum to meet the expectations of the course content of her Chemistry 1-2 and Physics 1-2 classes. She aligns her
lessons with the course pacing of her department peers. Her lessons are reflective and adjusted to the success of her
students in both formative and summative assessments. Shannon is well prepared and planned with a variety of materials
and resources (ie: video clips, power points, demonstrations, and lab days), which are readily available throughout her
daily lesson. Assignments and instruction are scaffold logically and sequentially to support student understanding.
Domain II- Accomplished Teachers Instruct ALL Students
Shannon clearly communicates her instruction and incorporates a variety of activities and strategies to support learning.
Shannon maximizes instruction with timed tasks and explicitly explained activities. She routinely uses engaging strategies
(ie: power point, demonstrations, video clips, note taking, peer discussions, graphic organizers, modeling, and small group
labs) to support learning. Shannon utilizes teachable moments and relates learning with real world experiences. Through
instruction, class circulation, and questioning with high academic language and prompts, Shannon encourages students to
participate and engage in processing new learning to deepen understanding and foster independent inquiry.
Domain III- Accomplished Teachers are Responsible for Creating and Maintaining a Learning Environment for
Students
Shannon has established an environment of respect and genuine interest displayed between student and teacher
interactions. She clearly explains expectations for behavior and academic tasks and uses circulation and proximity to
monitor all students. Shannon has established clear procedures to ensure safety of materials and to facilitate organization
of supplies and routines.
Domain IV- Accomplished Teachers are Contributing Members of Learning Communities and Demonstrate
Professional Responsibilities
Shannon is a reflective teacher and readily seeks out suggestions to improve her teaching practices. She has participated in
all required PPAP meetings and has met necessary time lines for induction requirements. Shannon has helped to lead the
Link Crew program on campus. According to the principal, Shannon is a solid and vital member to the staff. Shannon is
professional in working with students, staff, and parents to provide the best educational program for her students. She
collaborates well and there are no concerns in the area of Domain IV. Shannon has truly immersed herself into the
Westview community through her willingness to collaborate with her peers and building connections with her students.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
It is recommended that Shannon continue her professional growth through her own next best steps of:
Domains I, II, III
Include more frequent formative assessments to reflect, revise, and adjust instruction
Continue to utilize a variety of strategies to encourage students to participate and contribute to classroom
discussions
Continue to increase wait time between asking a question and calling on a student
Continue to create and monitor warm up activities for students to address upon entering class
Continue to increase student voice and participation in teacher led instruction

In order to assist with these recommendations, I will continue to visit and provide feedback and dialogue, videotape and
reflection, and provide District in-service information.

In summary, it is a pleasure to visit Shannons classroom. It is obvious that she puts a great deal of time and effort to
create daily engaging and rigorous lessons, while successfully managing academic and behavioral expectations for all
learners. Shannon is open and willing to implement suggestions and it is an absolute pleasure to assist her as she continues
to grow professionally.
