DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION/ ADAPTATIONS/ INTERVENTIONS

(Learning Styles, Students with Special Needs, Cultural Differences, ELL)

This is how you will accommodate students individual needs as these needs relate to lesson objectives.
The vocab olympics will accommodate to several students different learning styles. Students who prefer a
visual learning style will have their own personal sheets with the definitions. This activity will promote a
social learning style by working with the whole class and groups of students. Students who prefer a auditory
learning style will benefit from this activity as I will be reading the definitions aloud. This lesson will
accommodate to several different learning styles.

Special Needs Students with special needs will not have to find as many defintion
Students words.

Nonnative Speakers Nonnative speakers will be assigned a partner to guide him through the
activity

Gifted/Talented Gifted students will be paired with any student who needs help.

What concepts do you want students to understand after completing this lesson?

At the conclusion of the lesson the students will have a basic understanding on how the civilization of Rome
lived. Students will be able to Identify, locate, and draw conclusions on both Italy and Rome. Students will
have the ability to locate mountain ranges, rivers, and the different seas that surround Italy.

Criteria for Success (How will you know students have gained an understanding of the concepts?)

I will know if students have gained an understanding of the concepts if students are able to explain the
definition of many vocab words that are associated with Rome. I will know students can accurately locate
important cities and rivers in Italy if students complete the map activity.

Resources (What resources will you and your students use?)

Students will use laptops and an internet browser to look up the definition words that I provide to the
students. I will need a scanner to scan a blank map of italy so students can fill in important cities and rivers.
Students will use a digital camera to take a picture of their completed maps. I will print the photos and
students will write a description of where they would live in Italy during this time and why.

Technology (What technologies will be used by the teacher and students in the lesson?)
Laptops, internet browser, scanner, camera.

Technology Use (How will students use technology in the lesson? How will students share technology
resources?)

4Cs integration (How are each of the 4Cs being integrated into the lesson?)

Creativity will be displayed in my lesson by students creating their own maps of italy. Critical Thinking will
be used while students are participating in vocab olympics. Students will use critical thinking skills to find
the best definition possible for the vocab words. Communication will be used between me and students as I
conduct the vocab olympics and by answering any questions students have. Collaboration will naturally fit
into the lesson as students are seated at groups of tables around the classroom.

Prior Knowledge/Skills (What knowledge and skills will students need before the lesson? How will you
assess their readiness?)

For the vocab activity students will not need prior knowledge of the content. For the map activity students
should have a basic understanding of where cities and rivers are located in Italy. I will measure the student's
readiness by simply asking students if they could point out where Rome is on a blank map of italy.

Engage (Capture the students attention, stimulate their thinking and help them access prior knowledge.)

The vocab olympics is a fun competitive activity that students can learn while challenging their peers and
classmates.

Explore (Give students time to think, plan, investigate, and organize collected information.)

Students will have plenty of time to think and create their maps of italy to assure they can properly locate
important cities and rivers in Italy.

Explain (Involve students in an analysis of their explorations. Use reflective activities to clarify and modify
their understanding.)

This lesson will show if students can use the internet to find vocabulary words and learn the definition of
those words. I will be able to assess students knowledge of how Italy is designed by comparing their online
drawings to a real map of Italy.

Elaborate (Give students the opportunity to expand and solidify their understanding of the concept and/or
apply it to a real world situation.)

Students will use skills such as using the internet to find resources in possibly future jobs.

Evaluate (Evaluate throughout the lesson. Present student with a scoring guide at the beginning. Scoring
tools developed by teachers, sometimes with student involvement, target what students must know and do.
Consistent use of scoring tools can improve learning.)
I will evaluate students work and use a rubric on students maps to show if they did not do something correct
how to fix the map and improve the next time the class does a similar activity.
