ECD 237 Preschool Learning Plan # 002 Name: Kim Ward

Activity Name: Is it a Magnet? Age of Child (ren): 4

Setting: small group or individual

Developmental Focus: Gross Motor, Cognitive

Key Content Focus:

Physical Science

Key Content Area Concepts: Observations, Cause and Effect relationship

Key Content Area Skills: By exploring the materials children will be able to make
observations and gather information from magnetic vs non-magnetic.

Integrated Content Focus:

Math: While gathering information, children will be using math concepts to
classify and sort the materials
Integrated Content Area Concepts: Children will use Data Analysis, Classifying
and Using information when using the magnets to see if items will stick.
Integrated Content Area Skills: The children will explore the magnets and items
then sort items into the correct columns on chart. By using the magnets and
observing the children will be able to make their own observations and record the
information.

Learning Outcomes: The child will use their experiences to gather information on
magnetic and non-magnetic items. They will identify properties and relations of
magnetic and non-magnetic objects. They will demonstrate the attraction to
magnets by using positive and negative sides of the magnet.
The child will. The children will explore with the magnets and items to determine
which items are magnetic and non-magnetic. By making these observations children
will use vocabulary and their cognitive skills to make predictions as to which items
will be magnetic. While making these observations, the children will understand and
identify the materials our world is made of.

Standards: 3.2B PKB.1 Explore and describe the motion of toys and objects
Pennsylvania ELS Standards Science
Goal CD-15: Children explore the world by observing, manipulating object, asking
questions, making predictions, and developing generalizations NC standards
SC ELS: There are no SC ELS Codes for Science
SC ELS: There are no SC ELS Codes for Science these were taken from other
states
Other standards: Math M-4K-6.1 Organize and represent data with real objects

Materials to collect/prepare: Magnets (at least 2 more is great) paperclip, key,

spoon,
Coins, scissors, nails. Labeled chart with magnetic and nonmagnetic columns

Transition/warm up/introduction: I will say this poem to the children one time and then
ask them to say it with me the second time. It will be displayed for them to see with pictures (Like a
small chart) Magnets (Author Unknown) I am a mighty magnet, I can be very strong. But if you use
me exactly right nothing can go wrong. I can pick up many objects but not everything you see; I only
pick up objects
that are attracted to me. So take me now and try me out And you will quickly see,
What different kinds of things are pushed and pulled by me. Then I will introduce them to the
magnets and the object

Adult Procedures:
1. After the warm up I will ask children what items do they think will
attract the magnet?
2. I will tell the children to place items on the magnetic/non-magnetic
chart by guess first.
3. Then I will instruct the children to use the magnet to try and attract
the items.
4. I will tell the children to place the magnetic and nonmagnetic items
into the correct column on their chart.
5. I will encourage children to engage and play with the magnet with
other objects around us.

Child Procedures: (use as many steps as needed Must match the Adult
Procedures)
1.The child will converse with teacher by choosing which items are
attracted to the magnet
2. Next the child will place items into the columns they think applies to the
materials magnetic vs nonmagnetic
3. Then the child will explore with the magnets to see what items are attracted
to the magnet.
4. Then the child will self-correct the columns to reflect their findings.
5. Finally the child will explore with the magnet on other things and discuss the
findings aloud.

Conversation to Support Learning/Talking with Children: Why did you pick

(name of object) for the magnetic field? How did you know it would attract to the
magnet?
What if we put paper between the magnet and the object (pick one)? What else
does the magnet attract? Will it attract dirt? What about water?

Observations and Assessment: Child will explore and describe the magnetic and
non-magnetic items. The child will demonstrate understanding as to what items are
magnetic and non-magnetic by sorting them into the correct column. By observing
the child picking up items with the magnet and placing them in the correct column I
will identify the child as understanding exploration of magnets and attraction and
materials,

Accommodations for individuals:

Scaffolding down: To scaffold down I would not ask children to
categorize the items just explore with them to observe how the magnet
operates.

Scaffolding up: To scaffold up I would instruct children to gather 5 objects

that will attract to magnet (without using the magnet) from the classroom. Based on
the information they gathered, using a scientific guess. Then we will test them as a
group.
