Apple Patterns

Central Focus:
Using apple cut outs to make different patterns of numbers, letter, and colors.

8.B.ECa With adult assistance, represent a simple repeating pattern by verbally describing it or
by modeling it with objects or actions.
6.A.ECe Differentiate numerals from letters and recognize some single-digit written numerals.
6.B.ECc Identify the new number created when small sets are combined or separated.

Learning Objectives:
1. The child will follow a pattern given by the teacher using the apple cut outs of letters or
numbers.
2. The child will create their own patterns of numbers, letters, or colors using the apple cut outs

 Instructional Strategies
What will the teacher do?
1. Teacher will gather children into a small
group at a table.
2. Teacher will show the children all of the
different apple cut outs (numbers 1, 2, and
letters A, B). Teacher will ask students the
colors, numbers, and letters.
3. Teacher will create a pattern using 1 and 2
(1, 2, 1, 2)
4. Teacher will ask the children to continue
the pattern using the numbers.
5. Teacher will create a new pattern using A
& B (A, B, A)
6. Teacher will ask the children to continue
the pattern using the letters.
7. Teacher will give children examples of
other patterns that can be done (1, A, 1, A
or B, 2, B, 2).
8. Teacher will invite the children to create
their own patterns to show the other
children.
9. Teacher will place the apple cut outs in
the math manipulatives center for students
to use during learning centers time.
Learning Tasks
What will the children do?
1. Children will gather at the table for a
small group activity.
2. Children will actively participate as the
teacher shows them all of the different
apple cut outs and verbally answer the
teachers questions of the numbers, and
letters.
3. Children will observe as the teacher
creates a pattern using 1 and 2 (1, 2, 1,
2)
4. Children will continue the pattern using
the numbers.
5. Children will observe at the teacher
creates a new pattern using A & B (A, B,
A)
6. Children will continue the pattern using
the letters.
7. Children will listen as the teacher gives
examples of other patterns.
8. Children will create their own patterns to
show the other children.
9. Children will be able to play with these
apple cut outs in the math manipulatives
center during learning centers time.
Resources & Materials:
Red Apple Cut Outs with the number 1 written in the middle (5 each)
Green Apple Cut Outs with the number 2 written in the middle (5 each)
Yellow Apple Cut Outs with the letter A written in the middle (5 each)
Red Apple Cut Outs with the letter B written in the middle (5 each)
Plain Apple Cut Outs on red, yellow, and green paper (5 of each color)
Laminate each of the Apple Cut Outs

Assessment Strategies:
Observational notes taken during small group time when children are creating their own
patterns.

Modifications:
For apple patterns, some students might need help with each pattern. If students dont know
their letters or numbers, you could start the pattern activity with just using the different
colored plain apples.
