Student Name and University Number: Lucas A. Miller U00536015

Course Information
SAA 7650 Internship I in Student Affairs in Higher Education- 3 Credit Hours

Meeting the Learning Outcomes

My experience starting August 1, 2012 in my current position as the Community
Director has provided many educational and professional learning opportunities for me
to expand my expertise in the field of Student Affair in Higher Education. When I began
as the Community Director, I worked with supervision from the Director of Student
Services, and Housing was run by the two of us. In Fall 2014, a new position was
created, Coordinator of Housing & Athletics. I reported to this position until Summer
2016 when the supervisor role was transitioned back to the Director of Student Services
because of growth of campus programs. One Resident Assistant position was created for
Lake Campus Housing in Spring 2015. The following fall a second RA position was
created.
The internship experience provides advanced practice and supervision in Student
Affairs in Higher Education through a field experience in an area of interest. Residence
Life & Housing is my main area of interest in Higher Education. The Community Director
position I have at Wright State Lake Campus has proven to be an in-depth experience,
through which, I have had the opportunity to work in every area of residence life and
housing. The Resident Assistants report to me and assist with the daily operations of
housing during the fall and spring academic terms.
I work with potential students starting when they are looking at housing for the
first time, all the way through their experience on the Lake Campus. Housing tours are
organized and given through my office working with our admissions department. I
collect and enter their applications into the Universitys housing software, place them
with in their assignments, and provide them with the information needed for them to
move into campus housing. Once students are officially living on campus: I work with
the Police department to coordinate safety initiatives and parking in housing for
students. I work with the Lake Campus Conduct Officers to ensure the housing program
continues to operate smoothly and issues are handled efficiently. I work with Buildings
& Grounds to make repairs and modifications to the housing community. The Lake
Campus Housing Staff has worked with almost every office on campus to provide
programming opportunities to Lake Campus Housing residents. I believe this position
more than adequately provided field experience in Student Affairs in Higher Education
to meet the qualifications to have the first internship waived in this graduate program. I
also work closely with the Dayton Campus Residence Life & Housing Office to ensure the
Lake Campus continues to operate efficiently and relationships are created between the
campuses to help students have the best experience possible.
