Practicum Mini-Project

Salinas Masterful Mentors

When I approached my principal to ask if he would be willing to mentor me through my

practicum for grad school internship, not only was he happy to do so, but he stated he already
had a project in mind for me. He said he wanted something similar to the Watch Dog
program; however, he did not want the program itself. He didnt care for the walking the halls
security aspect of the program.

After much thought, I came up with the Salinas Masterful Mentors program which would have
male role models be more active and visible on campus. I created a survey asking fathers,
grandfathers, uncles, and other significant male roles if they would be interested in being more
involved in their students school life. I passed out the survey during our Father/Son Game
Night and immediately received 20 completed survey expressing an interest in the program.
Quite a few of the dads expressed their gratitude in being asked to participate more in their
childrens daily school activities.

I then contacted interested parents to give them more details of the what Salinas Masterful
Mentors was going to be. Being a Salinas Masterful Mentor means coming in to have lunch with
their child(ren), helping out in the classroom, reading to a class/child, helping out in the library,
helping out during afterschool dismissal, and mentoring a student. I also informed them that
they would need to be volunteer trained through the district online site.
