Sample Worm Gears

3.41.2 WORM GEAR NOMENCLATURES

The mating worm gear with 90

shaft angle have the same hand
of helix.

The helix angle is defined in the

same manner as was done for
helical gears.

On the worm, the helix angle is

quite large (at least , for one or
two teeth).

And very small on the gear.

3.41.2 WORM GEAR NOMENCLATURES

It is customary to specify the

lead angle for the worm and helix
angle for the gear.

For a shaft angle of 90 the two

angles are equal.

the worm lead angle is the

compliment of the worm helix
angle.

In specifying the pitch of worm gear sets specify,

* axial pitch of the worm
* circular pitch of the gear
These are equal if the shaft angle is 90

3.41.2 WORM GEAR NOMENCLATURES

It is common to employ fractions

for the circular pitch,
, 3/8, , , 1, 1 ,
etc.

Standard diametral pitches used

for spur gears can also be used.

3.41.2 WORM GEAR NOMENCLATURES

The LEAD (L) is the amount that

the worm will advance with one
revolution of the worm gear.

N2 = no. of teeth on the worm.

The PITCH DIAMETER (dt3) of

the worm is the same as that for
helical gears,

pt3 = circular pitch of worm gear

3.41.2 WORM GEAR NOMENCLATURES

For the worm and worm gear to mesh properly with shafts at right
angles, the following condition must be satisfied

1. The helix angle of the gear must equal the lead of the
worm.

2. The transverse circular pitch of the gear must equal the

axial pitch of the worm.
3.32_Spur Gear 14

3.41.2 WORM GEAR NOMENCLATURES

Worm gear sets may or may not be driven from both the
worm and gear.

In some applications, it is necessary for the drive to be

self-locking. Only the worm can be the driver.
3.32_Spur Gear 15

3.41.2 WORM GEAR NOMENCLATURES

In general, a worm gear set cannot be back driven if the

lead angle is less than 5 (helix angle > 85)

3.41.2 WORM GEAR NOMENCLATURES

Center distance = r2 + r3

The denominator may vary from 1.7 to 3.0 without

appreciably affecting the capacity.
