Professional Development Plan

Overall Goal To grow as an educator especially in my area of emphasis-physical

education- to learn from those around me how I can improve and how I can share
my knowledge with my students.

Short Term Goals

Goal 1

Introduction:

Students perform better when they are motivated. I feel that one way to motivate
my students is to have them make their own choices. This will be a short term goal
that I would like to monitor throughout the school year. Choices seem to give my
students ownership, responsibility, and desire to participate and improve in physical
activity.

Objectives:

Develop a curriculum that is more based on choices than team sports. I want my
students to focus on what motivates them. I feel the best way to do this is have an
environment in my class that provides my students to be in control and making
decisions. This will really focus on the cognitive development and growth of my
students throughout the year.

I will have my students help me design a school website with information on how to
stay physically fit with suggestions, exercises, healthy foods that my students
personal incorporate in their lives.

Activities:

I will increase my knowledge by attending several professional development

conferences or courses that are offered throughout the year. This will help with
introducing new activities that will motivate my students. I hope to find new and
fun ways to teach my students that require them to make their own choices and
decisions that will help them live a healthier lifestyle.

I will provide reflective journals to my students and will allow them 15 minutes at
the end of class to take a minute and think about what they had learned that day,
feelings they would like to express, and any other thoughts that they would like to
share. I feel that expression is a huge part of the learning process. If they can
reflect and give feedback to the lessons they learn everyday in PE it will have more
of a purpose and impact in their lives.

Resources:

Collaboration between my students' home room teacher will need to be

established. Curriculum will be created by the topics in which each age level will be
studying that year in their home room. This will help with the learning process,
confidence, and interest in my physical education classes. We will meet once a
month to follow up on how this program is working and how it is increasing
confidence and motivation in our students.

I will provide a survey at the end of the school year to see how the students enjoyed
this way of teaching by letting them make choices and have a voice in the activities.

Timeline:

This goal will be for one year. After the year I will go over the assessments and see
if fitness and motivation increased throughout the year.

Assessments:

I will observe through the Fitnessgram results how the students' activity choices
have affected their overall fitness level. I will test students on a regular basis and
the program I use can support attaining the data required for analysis. The
Fitnessgram program can sort the data by age and sex indicating what percentage
of the students have reached or exceeded the healthy fitness zone.

I will ask my students questions after each lesson and record their improvement on
a graph.
Goal 2

Introduction:

In the age of technology I would like to incorporate more ways to record fitness
progression in my PE classes.

Objectives:

Using the data collected download it into the computer and allow students to use
information to create their own personal individual fitness plans.

Present this idea to the district so they can help incorporate adding Fitnessgram
software and PDA software into physical education departments. This helps
incorporating technology into our classes.

Activities:

Provide training quarterly in this new way of adding technology into our physical
education classes in our district can collaborate and feel comfortable adding this
into the courses. I will find guest speakers that are experts in this topic to come and
present this new up and coming technology that will help improve our students'
skills and love for physical education.

I feel that the best way to understand something completely is to take time and
observe how it is implemented. Several appointments should be set up to observe
other teachers that have used this new technology in their classrooms.

Resources:

The best way to learn is from others. Some classroom teachers may be more
comfortable with technology and this is a good way for them to come in and mentor
those that are in need of help.

Send out an invitation for parents to come in and present any technical information
to the classroom. If parents don't feel comfortable in this specific topic of
technology invite them to come and attend some of the training courses so they
can feel comfortable and will be able to help implement it into the PE classes.

Timeline:
I would like to check the progress of this specific objective quarterly. Aug, Nov, Feb,
May

Assessments:

Test all 3rd through 6th grade students with the Fitnessgram. Use a variety of
methods to record/collect data including personal data assistant.

Provide a cognitive test to see if fitness increases while using new technology

Goal 3

Introduction:

Provide adaptations to my lessons for those that may need accommodations due to
ADHD, Anxiety, Developmental Delays, or any other form of disability.

Objectives:

Develop a comfortable environment for ALL of my students. This will be

accomplished with modifications, curriculum choices, and a more inclusive
atmosphere.

Provide a shadow teacher, parent, or peer that can come and assist during PE so
that everyone gets a positive experience in my PE class.

Activities:

An important activity is to videotape students choosing and implementing

modifications to the lessons so that they can participate and improve on their skills
and the lessons. As a teacher of 30 plus students in a class it is hard to see
everything that is going on in the classroom. If the lesson is videotaped observation
and assessments can be made.

A study circle is another activity that can be implemented in a physical education

lesson. This way everyone contributes and observation of information can be
evaluated.

Resources:

Volunteers will be needed to come in and help with daily events and especially for
assessments. I will create a sign up genius for those who would like to come in and
help in these activities.

Invite a professional that works with children with disabilities and provide a training
for others.

Timeline:
This is a short term goal and will be reviewed and assessed at the end of the school
year in May. This will be evaluated to see if I would like to continue to assess this
way within a 5 year span.

Assessments:

Some assessments that will be provided are the Fitnessgram with modifications and
accommodations. For example students can perform modified curl -ups and push-
ups instead of the regular ones required.

Accommodations from an IEP will be present.

Allow extra time to finish exam

Read test directions orally
Ask student to repeat directions in their own words
Allow students to take exam in a small group setting
Provide frequent breaks
Allow students to answer orally

NCLB will be implemented. This prohibits schools from excluding students with
disabilities from the educational accountability system.

Out of level assessment- a non-grade level instructional assessment. An

assessment made at a grade level that the student is assigned to.
Alternate assessment- an assessment designed for the small number of
students with disability who are unable to participate in regular state
assessment, even with accommodations. Some examples are teacher
observations, samples of work, or assigned tasks.

Alternate Achievement Standard- An expectation of performance that differs in

complexity form a grade-level achievement standard
Goal 4

Introduction: Include other subjects into my physical education curriculum. Some

subject I would like to focus on in my classrooms are math, science, reading,
language arts, art, and social studies.

Objectives:

Further my education and take interdisciplinary courses that will help me add math,
science, reading, language arts, and social studies into my physical education
courses.

Collaborate with home room teachers to get ideas and information to add to my
classes. I teach k through 6th grade so it will be beneficial to see what each grades
curriculum is so I can add these subjects to my classes. This will hopefully intensify
the interest and desires of my students.

Activities:

Attend a conference that specializes in the incorporation of adding a variety of

subjects into physical education classes.

Specific coursework will be provided so that all students will understand how to
bring their regular school subjects into PE. Some examples are math relay, acting
out stories, states and capitals tag, and plant cycle stations.

Resources:

Invite the homeroom teacher to come to PE and introduce what some of the
subjects in their classes may be. I could visit the class as well and observe what is
being taught everyday in the classroom to see how I could add specific curriculum
to my PE classes.

Provide a survey for a physical education teacher that has implemented classroom
subjects into her PE curriculum and have them express the pros and cons of this
program.
Timeline:

This will be implemented in a unit so it will only be done in a 4 week time period.
After this is completed I will evaluate and see if this is something I would like to
continue to do and add to my yearly curriculum.

Assessments:

Have students record their experiences in a person journal. I will allow the last 10
minutes for my students to take a minute an express their feelings about the day.
They will be instructed to give the pros and cons of the lesson, what would have
made the lesson better, and what was something new they learned that day.

Provide a written quiz on all of the different subjects added to their lessons in
physical education. Have some questions be short answer so they can express
what they have learned in more detail. Feedback is always a positive aspect for
teachers so they can see what is needed to be added or taken away in the lessons.
Long Term Goals

Goal 5

Introduction:

Create a blog so that students, parents, community, and administrators can follow
what we are learning in our PE classes. I will be able to receive feedback and
collaboration between others and it will help improve and expand my lessons.

Objectives:

This blog will show my school's site, which will promote my program and it will
include a large amount of physical activities and nutrition information for all to
follow. There will be an option for others to add comments that will help with the
collaboration of this program.

My courses will be focusing more on individual improvement and not mastery in a

specific skill. In my physical education classes and on this blog I will not promote
team sports. I will be focusing on how to introduce physical activity to children so
that they will be motivated to continue including it into their everyday lifestyle
throughout the years.

Activities:

I will make sure that I read up and research all the pros from focusing on
improvement in physical education instead of mastering a specific skill. Sports are
becoming way too competitive and not all children can keep up with the
expectations that are set before them. Studies have been taken and information
has been provided to help teach our students that it is not always about being the
best at everything, but improving on a personal level.
Videotaping students at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year would
be a great way to show them how they have improved throughout the year. This
activity could be turned into a fun event at the end of the year put up on a big
screen.

Resources:

Invite a colleague to teach me how to start up a blog. He/she can provide the pros
and cons of having a blog for students, parents, community, and administration.

Provide a sub to watch another physical education class for me. They could report
and return with feedback on what worked and what needed improvement on.

Timeline:

The time frame for this goal will be over a 5 year span. Through these 5 years I can
see if this way of teaching and providing confidence will increase improvement
throughout the years. Information can be collected at the end of each school year.
It will be in the form of written feedback from the students.

Assessments:

For assessments I would see what my student's feelings are on having a blog and if
it is beneficial by proving written questions. This will be time for them to provide
feedback on this program. This is a long term goal, but it can be evaluated on a
yearly basis. This information will be collected at the end of the year.

A portfolio can be assigned at the beginning of the year for each student so I could
evaluate their feedback through this form of assessment as well. This would cover
all cognitive, motor, and affective aspects of objectives that need to be measured.
Goal 6

Introduction:

A long term goal of mine is to further my education and enroll in a teacher

certification program. This will help me find a fulltime position with benefits in my
profession. This will open several new doors for me as well. This program will help
me with my physical education classes.

Objectives:

I will complete all the requirements to become a National Board Certified teacher.

Complete the required courses to become a certified teacher in the state of

Utah
Complete a student teaching program
Pass the Praxis test

Activities:

Specific coursework will be required of me to complete at a passing level. Some of

the courses are Human Development, Human anatomy, First Aide, and nutritional
classes.

I will be required to have a certain amount of hours recorded for observing other
teachers. This will require a lot of time management while I am still working as I get
my certificate.

Resources:
I will have to purchase and depend on several text books that I will need to purchase
so that I can complete these courses

Other classmates will be a huge resource for me. It is much easier to work with
others and complete assignments, ask questions, and collaborate to finish
assignments and projects.

Timeline:

This is a 2 year program that I feel I should be able to complete in that time frame. I
will be starting in August of 2016 and should be finished in August of 2018.

Assessments:

For each course there will be individual assessments. They may be written, oral,
multiple choice, or projects.
This final assessment will be the Praxis. This will be specifically in Physical Education
Goal 7
Introduction:

Create a portfolio of my curriculum for a span of 5 years. This portfolio will provide a
variety of teaching methods, skills, and techniques that will help me become more
organized.

Objectives:

This will include autobiographical information about how I became interested in

teaching, what I have accomplished thus far, what my goal are, how I will accomplish
them.

I will provide research in this portfolio to provide support in my teaching style,

findings, theories, and goals.

Activities:

During the next 5 years I will make it a personal goal to learn a new skill each month
so that I can evaluate it and record the findings in my portfolio. Some examples of
skill are become more technical and add music to my lessons, become more efficient
with time management, and taking classes in class management.

Study circles are a great way to document progress with students. I learn better in
groups. Students really enjoy learning and interacting with their peers. This could
be a whole section in assessments in my portfolio.

Resources:
Attend monthly professional development classes to increase my skills as certified
teacher. Find others to attend classes with to make it more fun and interesting. I will
try to find local ones.

Locate a colleague to be a mentor that has created a portfolio. This will allow me to
learn a tremendous amount of information on how to assemble and carry out this
project.

Timeline:

This portfolio will be completed in a 5 year teaching time span. A yearly review will
be done at the end of each school year.

Assessments:

Graphs will be monitored throughout the years to see if creating a portfolio and
staying organized will have effects on the progression of my students.

Personal journals will be provided for each student. I will collect these journals and
record the results at the end of the school year in my portfolio and see if students
have positive experiences in my physical education classes. Their feedback will help
better my program and it will be interesting to see all the different aspects
throughout the years.
