Standards (What do you want students to know and be able to do? What knowledge, skills, and strategies do you
expect students to gain? Are there connections to other curriculum areas and subject area benchmarks? )
Standard 4 (c) Develop and use the concept of perimeter of different shapes to solve problems.
Standard 2: 2 (a) Estimate and find the sum or difference (with and without regrouping) of 3-
and 4-digit numbers using a variety of strategies to solve application problems.
Content Standards (b) Multiplication Concepts and Fact Families

1. (a) demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems.
(b) are proficient in the use of technology.
NETS*S Standards:

Overview (a short summary of the lesson or unit including assignment or expected or possible products)

Students will complete a review with class on addition and multiplication and perimeter and area formulas.
Students will work on Minecraft to practice their ability to find perimeter and area of figures. Students will be able
to successfully find the area and perimeters of figures. Students will then be given a worksheet to test their
knowledge.

Essential Questions (What essential question or learning are you addressing? What would students care or
want to know about the topic? What are some questions to get students thinking about the topic or generate
interest about the topic? What questions can you ask students to help them focus on important aspects of the
topic? What background or prior knowledge will you expect students to bring to this topic and build on?)

What are the formulas for addition and multiplication?

How do you find the perimeter of a figure?
How do you find the area of a figure?

Assessment (What will students do or produce to illustrate their learning? What can students do to generate new
knowledge? How will you assess how students are progressing (formative assessment)? How will you assess
what they produce or do? How will you differentiate products?)

Students will first build simple rectangles without considering any kind of calculation and then build specific
rectangles with specific perimeters and/or areas.
Students will build all possible rectangles having specific perimeters and need to calculate their areas.
Students will complete an area and perimeter assessment worksheet to test their knowledge.

Resources (How does technology support student learning? What digital tools, and resourcesonline student
tools, research sites, student handouts, tools, tutorials, templates, assessment rubrics, etchelp elucidate or
explain the content or allow students to interact with the content? What previous technology skills should students
have to complete this project?)

Students should be able to work on a computer.

Students will need access to a computer with internet.
Students will need access to Minecraft.com.

Instructional Plan
Preparation (What student needs, interests, and prior learning provide a foundation for this lesson? How
can you find out if students have this foundation? What difficulties might students have?)

Teacher will review with students how to add, multiply and the formulas for area and perimeter and go over some
sample problems with them. Students will need to know how to use a computer and the internet. Some students
may have no prior computer use, so teacher will be there for assistance, if needed.

Management (How and where will your students work? Classroom, lab, groups, etc?

Students will review with teacher in the classroom and then go to a computer lab to work on computers.

Instruction and Activities (What instructional strategies will you use with this lesson? How will your
learning environment support these activities? What is your role? What are the students' roles in the
lesson? How can the technology support your teaching? What engaged and worthwhile learning activities
and tasks will your students complete? How will they build knowledge and skills? Will students be
expected to collaborate with each other and others? How will you facilitate the collaboration?)

The teacher will give the students a refresher on addition and multiplication. The teacher will provide students with
area and perimeter formulas. The teacher will provide students with access to computer and Minecraft.com to do
activity by themselves. The teacher will give the students an after-activity assessment worksheet to assess their
knowledge on the subject.

Differentiation (How will you differentiate content and process to accommodate various learning styles
and abilities? How will you help students learn independently and with others? How will you provide
extensions and opportunities for enrichment? What assistive technologies will you need to provide?)

The students will work as a class to refresh their knowledge of area and perimeter. Students will work by
themselves on a computer in gaming style. Students will apply their knowledge with an assessment worksheet.

Closure and Reflection (Will there be a closing event? Will students be asked to reflect upon their work?
Will students be asked to provide feedback on the assignment itself? What will be your process for
answering the following questions?
Did students find the lesson meaningful and worth completing?
In what ways was this lesson effective?
What went well and why?
What did not go well and why?
How would you teach this lesson differently?)

The students will individually complete an assessment worksheet on perimeter and area. When they are all
finished, the teacher will call students up to the board to work the problems and go over the answers as a class.
