MULTI-MEDIA AUTHORING TEMPLATE

PART A: Students will create their own original movie using Windows Live Movie Maker. The purpose of
their movie is to show understanding and application of the Pythagorean Theorem. The movie should be
from one or three minutes long and include images and at least one imbedded video. The video should
include an explanation of how the theorem works, what it is used for, and a basic explanation of why it
works. Afterwards, the students will post their video onto the classroom blog so that it can be used for class
review and shared with parents and others interested in geometry.

the Pythagorean Theorem to solve right triangles in applied problems.

Brief Description of Learning Experience: The teacher will introduce the project by showing the class a
sample math video that was created to go along with the lesson. The teachers will then assistant students as
they make their video by showing them how to use Windows Live Movie Maker. The students should
collect applicable images and videos while obeying copyright laws. The students will gather information for the project
and when finished, present the video to their classmates and post the video onto the classroom blog.
The video should be between one and three minutes long and include around 25 images and at least one
imbedded video. Students could also work in pairs if they prefer to film themselves for part of the project.
This project should take one week for the gathering and/or filming stage and one addition week for the
movie creation and editing stage. The expected audience is the fellow classmates and later, through the blog, parents and
others outside the classroom. The teacher will provide feedback to the students assessing the soundness of their mathematical
reasoning and quality of their video.
Student Engagement/Higher-Order Thinking: What LoTi level would this lesson be and Why? This
lesson could reach a LoTi level 4 because students are creating and producing an original product for an
audience in and beyond the classroom. This is the integration level of LoTi where students are engaged in
higher-order thinking skills.
Importance of technology: Why is using a multimedia authoring tools critical to the project? Could the
project be completed without this technology? What would be lost without using it? What other types of
technology, if any, are going to be used in the learning experience? The multimedia authoring tools are
critical to this project because it forces the students to really think about the how and why related to the
standard. The multimedia authoring tools allows the students to be creative and produce an original work.
Windows Live Movie Maker is fairly simple for students to learn how to use and create a professional
looking product. Without this technology students could create poster or other visuals but the LoTi level
would drop as the audience would not go beyond the classroom.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy: Briefly discuss some possible issues surrounding internet safety and
student privacy that could arise while implementing this learning experience and explain how youd
minimize risks to students/yourself, alleviate any fears by parents/administrators, and follow school
districts Internet Safety/Use Policy. A possible issue that might be applicable to this project would
be students coming into contact with strangers by outsiders seeing the blog. This risk should be reduced by
ensuring the privacy setting on the blog are set to where only parents and students can access the blog or
by making sure no student names or locations are used. The videos and blog should follow all the school
district internet safety policies.

Other comments about your proposed student multimedia authoring activity: Videos are an excellent
tool to engage students in the learning process and create an educational product.
