Something to Think About...
To live anywhere in the world today and be against equality
because of race or color is like living in Alaska and being
against snow. -William Faulkner

background
In the past 50 years the racial achievement gap has not significantly
narrowed.
This issue has been addressed since the 1960s from the civil rights
movement.
Recent studies have shown that minority families have a lower than
average income, making them to be at a greater disadvantage for equal
education.
73 percent of White households own their own homes compared to the 47
percent of Hispanic households and 45 percent of Black households.
causes
The inappropriate allocation of classified
teachers in diverse classrooms.
The financial aid and funding towards
schools in urban communities.
The disadvantages minority students have
in a lower income household, limiting the
child from retrieving the necessary tools to
achieve success in school.
effects
In all creating the racial achievement gap that allows students to fall behind.
Creates a lack of racial integration in schools.
The ability for minority families to change social classes and the ability for
minority children to earn a higher income than their parents.
Possibly making the student feel as if they are not worthwhile and useless.
solutions
Implementing government and community programs to help the minority
students struggling to progress.
Educating others in school to spread awareness for the need of a lending
hand and inclusion.
Making sure that teachers are properly allocated to help narrow the racial
achievement gap.
Financial aid to urban schools with smaller tax dollars to support the school
Needs to be individually designed educational techniques for each student.
District Funding, by Racial Composition and Poverty Level
The more diverse a school
becomes, the less funding it will
receive. This graph shows how
the funding is directly affected
by race. These reductions in
fundings do not allow for the
proper allocation of qualified
teachers in proper teaching
environments.
