Worldmapper Resources, poverty and war deaths

For the following 3 tasks you might want to print the maps and annotate them or
bullet point descriptive statements in order to describe the patterns shown. Your
choice.
1. Take a look at each of the maps and write a description of 2 of them, describe where the
resource is in high abundance (lots available) and where there is low abundance (very little
available).
Water resources http://www.worldmapper.org/display.php?selected=102
Traditional fuel (includes wood, charcoal, bagasse (sugar cane waste), and animal and
vegetable wastes) http://www.worldmapper.org/display.php?selected=109
Oil http://www.worldmapper.org/display.php?selected=111
Gas http://www.worldmapper.org/display.php?selected=112
Coal http://www.worldmapper.org/display.php?selected=113

2. Describe the patterns for the following two maps

Fuel exports high surplus http://www.worldmapper.org/display.php?selected=115
Fuel imports demand outstrips supply http://www.worldmapper.org/display.php?
selected=116

3. Finally describe the distribution of the following

Human poverty http://www.worldmapper.org/display.php?selected=174
War deaths http://www.worldmapper.org/display_extra.php?selected=484

Answer these questions must be completed in full sentences.

1. What patterns do you notice between resource availability and fuel imports/exports?
2. What patterns do you notice between resource availability and human poverty?
3. What patterns do you notice between human poverty and war deaths?
4. What other patterns have you noticed?
Your turn to create a map. Using the data on death toll related to conflicts colour in
your world map from last lesson using a suitable colour key. Further guidance is
available at the Help Yourself resource station.
