Types of Amplitude Modulation (AM)
Double Sideband Suppressed Carrier (DSBSC):

Double Sideband with carrier

Single Sideband (SSB): In this modulation, only half

of the signal of the DSBSC is used.

Vestigial Sideband (VSB): This is a modification of the

SSB to ease the generation and reception of the signal.

4 Department of CSE, CUET

Problem with Suppressed Carrier scheme

Limitation of SC scheme
Frequency and phase synchronism is required (synch
ronous or coherent demodulator)
Sophisticated receiver must be required.

5 Department of CSE, CUET

Solution
The alternative is to transmit a carrier A cos ct
In this scheme, the transmitter needs to transmit much
larger power.
The Tx signal can be given by

AM (t ) A cos ct m(t ) cos ct [ A m(t )] cos ct

1
AM (t ) [ M ( c ) M ( c )] A [ ( c ) ( c )]

Working Procedure

Diode is in Forwardbiased or

Reversebiased

When the diode is forward biased, it acts like a short circuit and
the voltage across the capacitor follows the voltage of the source.

When the diode is reversebiased, it is acting like an open circuit

and the capacitor simply discharges through the resistor.

3 Cases

If the value of the timeconstant of the capacitor and resistor

= RC is suitable (not too large or too small), the charging and
discharging of the capacitor results in a signal that follows the
message signal with some small ripples.

If the value of = RC is too large, the discharge may be too

slow that some parts of the envelope of the AM signal are not
followed.

If the value of = RC is too small, the discharge may be too

fast that the output signal contains extremely large ripples and it
may be hard for any added low-pass filter to remove these large
ripples.
