Chapter 7

Of God's Covenant

1. The distance between God and the creature is so great, that although
reasonable creatures do owe obedience unto Him as their Creator, yet they
could never have attained the reward of life, but by some voluntary
condescension on God's part, which He hath been pleased to express, by way
of covenant.

Luke So likewise ye, when ye shall have done all those things which are commanded you, say,
17:10 We are unprofitable servants: we have done that which was our duty to do.

Job 35:7 If thou be righteous, what givest thou him? or what receiveth he of thine hand?
Job 35:8 Thy wickedness may hurt a man as thou art; and thy righteousness may profit the son of
man.

2. Moreover, man having brought himself under the curse of the law by his fall,
it pleased the Lord to make a covenant of grace,

Genesis And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou
2:16 mayest freely eat:
Genesis But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day
2:17 that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Galatians For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written,
3:10 Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of
the law to do them.

Romans Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by
3:20 the law is the knowledge of sin.
Romans But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by
3:21 the law and the prophets;
Romans Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all
3:22 them that believe: for there is no difference:
Romans For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
3:23
Romans Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
3:24
Romans Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his
3:25 righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
Romans To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier
3:26 of him which believeth in Jesus.

wherein He freely offereth unto sinners life and salvation by Jesus Christ, requiring of
them faith in Him, that they might be saved;

Romans For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his
8:3 own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
Romans That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh,
8:4 but after the Spirit.

Mark 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every
creature.
Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be
damned.

John For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth
3:16 in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through
3:17 him might be saved.
John He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned
3:18 already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

and promising to give unto all those that are ordained unto eternal life, His Holy
Spirit, to make them willing, and able to believe.

Ezekiel A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take
36:26 away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
Ezekiel And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall
36:27 keep my judgments, and do them.

John No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise
6:44 him up at the last day.
John It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that
6:45 hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
Psalm Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the
110:3 womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth.

3. This covenant is revealed in the gospel first of all to Adam in the promise of
salvation by the seed of the woman,

Genesis And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed
3:14 above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and
dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:
Genesis And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed;
3:15 it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

and afterwards by farther steps, until the full discovery thereof was completed in the
New Testament;

Hebrews God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by
1:1 the prophets,
Hebrews Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all
1:2 things, by whom also he made the worlds;
Hebrews Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and
1:3 upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins,
sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
Hebrews Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more
1:4 excellent name than they.

and it is founded in that eternal covenant transaction that was between the Father
and the Son about the redemption of the elect;

II Timothy Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner:
1:8 but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;
II Timothy Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works,
1:9 but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus
before the world began,
II Timothy But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath
1:10 abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:
II Timothy Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.
1:11

Titus Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect,
1:1 and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;
Titus In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
1:2
Titus But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is committed unto me
1:3 according to the commandment of God our Saviour;
Titus To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the
1:4 Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour.

and it is alone by the grace of this covenant that all of the posterity of fallen Adam,
that ever were saved did obtain life and blessed immortality; man being now utterly
incapable of acceptance with God upon those terms on which Adam stood in his state
of innocency.

Hebrews But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must
11:6 believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Hebrews These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar
11:13 off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were
strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

Romans 4:1 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath
found?
Romans 4:2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before
God.

Acts Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given
4:12 among men, whereby we must be saved.

John 8:56 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
