Agency/Program Goals: The goal of a school nurse is to encompass the optimal health

for all children. Another goal is to provide education, vaccines, and oral health services to

children who need it.

Source of Funding: The source of funding for school health services is from taxes. The

federal and state fund for both special education and regular education.

Services Available: The school has speech therapy, hearing tests, assessments, a

psychologist, physical therapy, and an occupational therapist.

Cost to Individual: There is no cost for the individual because taxes pay for all the

health services as mentioned previously.

One of the Eight QUAD Council Core Competencies Relating to My Experience:

The QUAD Council Core Competencies that applied to my experience are

communication skills. The school nurse addressed this when she assessed the population

of children with diabetes at the school. She communicated with the students and their

parents during lunch about the childrens blood glucose. She effectively communicated

through telephone and face-to-face conversation. The parents were educated on diabetes

and how to manage their children. Also, towards the end of the day there was a newly

diagnosis diabetic child. The child and the mother were both Spanish speaking. Then

nurse used a Spanish translator to educate the mother about the basics of diabetes. That

was the first session covered and there will be more to come.
