Metric Conversion Study Guide 3
Volume
Basic unit is the liter, which equals 1 cubic decimeter, dm3 (1.06 quart). A liter of water at its maximum density
weighs almost 1 kg. Therefore, 1 ml (= 10-3 liter) of water weighs, for all practical purposes, 1 g. One cubic
centimeter (cm3 or cc) is 10-3 dm3. Therefore, it is equal to 1 ml, and the units ml and cc are used interchangeably.
Temperature
Basic unit is the Celsius (formerly known as centigrade) degree, C. 0oC is the freezing point of water; 100oC is the
boiling point of water. To convert from C to F (Fahrenheit) or vice versa: F - 32 = 9/5 C.

Working the Conversions
A. 3.2 km = 3200 m
km
Formula: m = 0.0010000
Video Conversion of km to m: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4qR3y9W_zY
Note: 1 km = 1,000 m
Working the formula:
km -> m
km x 1000.000 (multiply 3.2 by 1000.000)
3.2 x 1000.000 = 3200.000
m = 3200.000
B. 0.015 m = 15 nm
Formula:

Note: 1 m = 1000 nm
Working the Formula:
C. 27.83m = 2783 cm
cm
Formula: m = 100.00
Video Converting centimeters to meters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bQ6HJsAv4A
Note: 100 cm = 1m
Working the formula:
cm -> m
cm/ 100.0000 (divide 27.83 by 100.0000)
27.83/100.0000 = 0.2783000
m = 0.2783000
D. 5000 ml = 5 l
ml
Formula: L = 1000.0
E. 0.95 mg = 0.00095 g
mg
Formula: 1000.0
F. 6513 = 651.3 nm
Formula: {0.1 l = l nm} {10 l nm = l }

Video Angstroms to Micrometers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZmyxAz4xTA
Note: {10 billion = 1 meter}
{1 meter = 1000000000 nanometer}
Working the Formula:
{0.1 l = l nm} {10 l nm = l }
= 6513 then nm = 0.1 6153 = 651.3 nm
